Worst. Post. Office. Ever. I swear, this place is where all that is good and decent in the world goes to wither and die. The only time there's even a remote possibility that I can go there and not wait in line for at least 20 minutes to pick up a package is when it first opens on a Saturday, when the rest of Chicago is asleep. The workers are apathetic, lazy, and inept save one guy, and that's putting it mildly. No matter how long the lines are, there is never more than two windows open, the caller window where you can go directly to pick up packages is only open for two hours the entire day, and there's at least one employee on a break... at all times. How do I know? Because frustrated customers ask why there are only two people, and that's always the answer. As if the obscenely long lines aren't enough to make your blood boil, here are some true stories of my own experiences with the Uptown Post Office:
1. In November of '07, someone in our apartment building got into our mailbox and stole a DVD set from our mail. We figured that maybe the mailbox was broken. It turns out that two tenants before us, someone lost their apartment mail key and rather than hold their mail and wait for them to get a new one or have them pick up their mail at the Post Office, the carrier just decided to leave the main lock to all the boxes unlocked so the tenant could get his or her mail without a key. They didn't offer so much as an apology and kept passing the buck to other Postal workers and carriers. Now we have to pay $100 a year for a P.O. box so they'll actually do their job right. As of now (July of '08), the box is still left unlocked at least once a week and we never got any sort of reimbursement for the stolen DVD set.
2. A few months ago, I got a package slip in my P.O. box. As usual, I waited in line for about 20-25 minutes. The lady said, "Oh, you'll have to come back tomorrow. The driver has the package with him, and it won't come back until he's done with his route tonight." I said, "But I have a P.O. box here. Why would it be out on the truck?" She insisted that I'd have to come back the next day, so I stormed out. As I got to the door, I thought about how stupid it seemed that they would give me a package slip when I didn't have a package available to pick up, and that she was probably mistaken (i.e. an idiot). So I came back in and explained the situation to another guy working there, who rolled his eyes, asked me who told me that, and *gasp* found my package in about 30 seconds.
I know that the Post Office in a big city is on par with the DMV, and that crappy attitudes and crappy service are almost a given, but this place goes above and beyond in the realm of overall horrid performance. If you hate long lines, awful customer service, and employees' utter inability to do their jobs correctly, please go elsewhere. Well, unless you're the sort of oddball who enjoys being regularly pushed to the brink of turning your head and spitting pea soup in frustration. read more
