Long overdue review…read more After I completed my retaining wall in our backyard, it was time to move onto finishing the yard with full pavers and artificial turf. I met with a few different contractors, and after meeting Jose and his team, I went with Simancas Landscaping and was very happy with the decision. I actually created the plan myself for the backyard, and reviewed it with Jose and it came out exactly as I had hoped! I did all the landscaping myself, but I am sure that his team could've also done that as well. We also decided to pave over our concrete California Room to make everything cohesive, and the finished product came out better than expected. Jose was very communicative throughout the project, and when problems arose, we worked together to move past them. I would definitely recommend Simancas for paver and artificial turf installation!

Got an honest quote right up front from these guys and scheduled them for a grind. Super friendly, professional and punctual. Cut the remaining trunk down and ground down and was able to go 1'-1.5' deep in the soil so I can plant a more size-appropriate tree here. Our drip line was too close to the grind and got clipped but before I even saw it, they had capped it off after they blew the saw dust off the driveway. Call these folks first. You'll get some whacky quotes otherwise. Like one was for $350.

During the course of the project, they showed up everyday and worked hard to deliver 95% of the project on time within about 4 months. For that I give them full marks. The last 5% is what I have to take some of those marks away and to share our experience for the benefit of others. What should have been a day or 2 worth of work to fix a few things and wrap up the project ended up taking 2+ months to resolve. Jesus kept saying he had to be in Mexico for family reasons with no cell signal and therefore could not respond. In any event, as a customer, even though we tried to be sympathetic, our patience was running thin as this happened repeatedly. Jesus is a reasonable guy with a professional and knowledgeable team. However, we found communication to be quite challenging in the last 2 months. Having said all of that, taking the whole picture in view, they offer an affordable service (for bay area prices at least) with reasonably high quality. If thats what you are looking for, and are willing to project manage the project at times, then they are a good option.

As a few others with low reviews have noted, Jesus is a bit overloaded and sometimes disappears. He had to leave for Mexico during a significant remodel project and I kept our project going...which was a bit of a challenge since my Spanish is a bit rusty. I had little notice when he went MIA, but due to his personality I didn't mind and acted as project manager. I don't mind having to act PM of my own project, but the reason I'm forced to update my review is due to this: At the end of our $40k cash remodel (our remodel was sizably higher but that was his portion) we hired him to do more work. This additional work was to replace brand new lawns we had hired a previous landscaper to install a few months prior, and to finish the side yard. I paid his man in full once they "completed" the project given my faith in Jesus, but I made sure Jesus knew that there were issues that needed to be solved (dead patches of grass, sprinkler heads not working, install of moss was inadequate with no top soil and planting of 40+ Irish moss into dead ground which didn't hold). He promised me, and my wife, that these issues he agreed were his responsibility would be fixed. Months later, no labor was sent to repair. Instead, he visited once again with me and my wife to review the issues he knew needed to be addressed and promised a crew on Friday. They never arrived with zero communication. After a few weeks my wife reached out to Jesus and made it clear our patience was spent, and she and Jesus agreed on $4,700 cash refund to cover the repairs of the above already mentioned, plus the cuts his guys put into our $30k deck because they foolishly used the saw and wire on our brand new deck to cut the wire. Well, a guy showed up with $1,500 - not $4,700 - and we've never heard from him since. I could report him to the EDD and do a small claims case, but honestly, I like Jesus and his team. I just feel obliged to help my fellow Yelpers and tell them - if you have someone else you can trust and is reliable, go there and pass on Meza.

But after I hired him, it was so distressed and problematic to work with them, being dishonest and argumentative. Here are some reason out of many more: 1. During the first visit, he said he would send 4 worker for the project, in the end only his dad and another random worker onsite working, and his dad won't listen to our need and keep saying he knows everything and Eric himself is not supervising at all. The last day, random worker was not showing up and his dad brought his brother and another relative to finish the mulching and irrigation. 2. Before he got the job, he told me he needs to leave for 2 days during the process because of other jobs, I said okay, but it was a lie, he left for 12 days=2 weeks, finally get back on the site. That was a red flag that I missed, I should've fire them at that point to save me from more distress. 3. He said initially he would covert it to 2 valves zone irrigation for the whole area ( around 1550sqf, in total 65 plants), he quote is based on that. During the job he insisted on install only 1 valve, said it is okay , one is good enough for all the plants. And I paid $300 Extra for asking them put a underground valve box. 4. He said he would use sod cutter to remove the lawn during the first visit and end ups with weed whacking, I didn't even know until they started. I was not happy with it but I didn't complain at all. 5. I asked for 2x4'' pressured treated wood for the border, and he quote me based on it. During work told me that he has to change to plastic board, saying pressed treated wood won't bend! Why don't you say it before and made it clear? Why do you still quote me for it if you can't use it? 6. We have a slope are that is too high compared with the rest needed to be level down, he said it is too expensive to dump the dirt and his dad said i need to pay 6000$ more for remove the soil ! it is only a small area ( the highest point of the ground) needed to be level down, but no, they won't shovel it down and wanted me to pay 6000$ for it. 7. And all the debris from the lawn they put in on the street for the city, and he dad keep saying the city will take it away even though I questioned and said you better not, I was being polite to them. Still they just don't listen and put it on the street and said if the city don't take it and I will come and take it. 8. I paid 400 Extra for the drain pipe ( around 25 feet ) because he refuse to level down the highest ground. But the drain they installed, when it started to rain a few days ago, the water stuck around the area and flush away the mulch! I send him photos and called and explained, he said there is too much water and the solution is to put the Pop-Up Drainage Emitter next to the sidewalk. Again, why didn't you say that when I install it? Now he needs to charges me for fixing it and actually never get back to me with a quote. 9. Don't pay attention to details at all. All the border area is really messy because they didn't do proper digging at all around the border , the mulch won't stay below the ground or even the border. I told them to dig more but they didn't dig because they don't care. What kind of landscaping job is that? There are many other things happened which made the whole process stressful, and I don't think the job they do worth it. Honestly I will never recommend them and hire them again, and I regret that I did!

Angel's was by far the fairest and he offered to break it out into 4 separate cleanings instead of 1 cleaning (same price). His team does great work and Angel is always quick to respond to messages. Our yard is spotless now, and we'll definitely come back if we need more landscaping services in the future!
