I hired Cristian from Mateo's Landscaping on the 5 star reviews. At the beginning Cristian and his team communicated effectively. They did a pretty good job on gardening. He said he'd help with yard etc. Over time communication degraded to poor. He often would not show up as promised. I had to ask multiple times for the same request. Cristian and his team did not show my trees, bushes and plants the care they needed. I asked him to do a fence job and now the nails are coming loose in some areas. Not good craftsmanship. The fence door fell apart. He did come back to fix that. They often left the gate open and my dog had gotten out. The last straw was when his team cut trees in my yard and left a pile of debris blocking my route to exit. I tried to move around it and now I have small scratches on my car due to it. I called and texted and he took hours to get back to me. Blamed it on another job he was working at. He blamed his crew and said they left it there without his Knowledge. Then when I shared with him I was deducting money due to big inconvenience he said he was not going to move it. He brought in his family etc. Too much of a headache. His team finally removed it 2 days later. He demanded full payment yet his team only trimmed half of the trees. Cristian and his team are not reliable at times. They are unprofessional. Very poor communication. The money spent not worth the work they did. Charged me a lot over the years. They are a mow and blow service from my time having them as a gardener. Mateos Landscaping, here's a rundown of our experience with this company. Me and my wife bought a home with a nice big backyard. Unfortunately the backyard was full of lava rocks, roses, randomly placed plants, and an absurd amount of rocks piled into a huge mound. We also have young children and pets but with the random amount of things in our backyard, the kids and animals could never utilize the backyard since it wasn't kid and animal friendly. So in comes Mateos Landscaping with Cristian and his crew to our rescue. After a quick measurement of our backyard, swapping ideas back and forth, they quickly gathered their crew and got to work. When they said they can get everything done in 2 weeks they weren't bullshitting us. These guys are quick, in 2 weeks they were able to demo and remove everything from the backyard, lay down new pavers, concrete steps, artificial grass, run new irrigation lines and electrical lines, build a custom playhouse for the kids, and setup a pergola for us. We were truly impressed with how quick and efficient they got it all done! Cristian kept us informed through out the whole process and made sure to let us know what was being done and any issues they ran into. We did however request that they did not plant any trees, shrubs, bushes, or flowers, which is why the pictures I posted of their work looks so bare bones. I particularly love gardening so I will be personally planting all the trees, plants, and flowers we want in our backyard. Overall, Mateos Landscaping did a great job on our backyard and when the time comes we will most likely have them come back and work on our front yard too. The only piece of advice I would suggest to any homeowner whos having a total yard makeover is to "trust the process". There were many times where me and my wife would inspect their work at the end of the day and question "Why did they do that?" "That doesn't look right" "That's not what we envisioned" Only to have them come back and change exactly what we were concerned with, without us saying anything. If I could give Mateos Landscaping more than 5 stars, I would. They did two massive projects at my mom's house, and both were done exceptionally well and at a very reasonable price. They are very good about coming out and giving you a fair estimate, taking pictures, and really taking the time to assess the scope of work and what needs to be done. The first was a retaining wall project. They replaced her rotted 50-year-old wall with a new one that exceeded our expectations. The quality and attention to detail on the wall were excellent. They removed a giant palm tree and all its roots and cleared other dead trees, plants, roots and rock from a hill which they dug out more than 2 feet, making way for a clean set-up for the wall. They lined the wall for a moisture barrier and backfilled it for a perfect fit. He and his workers were top-notch. They always arrived on time and finished even before their original time estimate. They were extremely meticulous with the work and cleaned up after themselves so well that it was even cleaner than before we started! The second project was a large-scale tree trimming project. They came out with five guys to perform this huge job. Many of these trees were between 20 and 40 feet (oak trees, cypress trees, etc.), so I was curious to know how they would get everything cleared and away from our roofline for fire considerations, given the tight workspace. Again, the workers were on top of it and were able to get everything cleared and nicely trimmed up. They did the same thing in the backyard with large cypress trees and other foliage around the pool area. The growth was so bad in that area that you could barely walk around the pool without hitting a branch. Now it's perfectly clear, and even with me being 6' 4", I can now safely walk around that area without getting smacked in the head. Again, not only did they do all the trimming, but the team went above and beyond with the cleanup by getting the leaves out between the rocks, blowing and picking up all the loose debris, and even skimming our pool to the point that it was even better executed than what our pool service guy does for us every week. All in all, my mom and I were extremely impressed with Meteos Landscaping. We have now hired them to do our monthly gardening service and will definitely recommend them to others needing this kind of work. Finding quality work like this is tough nowadays, so these guys were a breath of fresh air. They give you your money's worth and bend over backward to make sure their customers are happy. I initially found these guys through Yelp!, and I have to say, their 5-star reviews are justified, and I'm glad I now have a reliable, family-operated gardening and landscaping service that gives me the results I'm looking for. read more

We first contacted Cristian on Yelp way back in March, while we were still working on our landscape design. Our designer took longer than expected to complete our design but Cristian was never pushy and waited for us to complete the design first. We contracted him for our project after talking to four other landscapers in the area because he was not only very friendly, responsive, and creative, but also because his quote was reasonable too. He wasn't the cheapest but worked with us and also suggested some changes to accommodate all our must-haves and many of our nice-to-haves without exceeding our budget. Our scope included demolition, installing pavers, repairing & painting the fence, side gate, retaining wall, Gazebo & concrete floors, installing arbors, planting over 100+ trees/plants, setting up new smart irrigation, and installing pebbles & mulch. After we signed the contract, his crew arrived the very same day and began the project, despite being a Saturday. They came on-time at 8:30am every day and worked all day. Cristian also came everyday, after picking up the materials needed for the day's work, to both supervise and work alongside his crew. Before they left for the day, they made sure they cleaned up everything and set their tools away safely. They were able to complete my project on-time and on-budget. Cristian even completed a few other minor items that weren't even in our contract, for no extra charge. Mateos bid estimate was very fair when compared to the competition, and so we chose his crew. Mateo, his son Cristian, and their crew show up on time the day the project was started. They worked two days clearing weeds, delivering and installing base rock, compacting it, installing weed block fabric, and finally delivering and installing a nice compacted top layer of crushed granite gold / chardonnay path fines from the rockery. The crew easily accomplished a few other odd jobs around my yard that I had requested, and in the end cleaned the job site up in a very satisfactory manner. Mateos (and Son) came out to get a scope of the work which included some cutting back of a few trees that had sprouted up from spreading, and the biggest thing was installing about 1000 sq ft of sod. They bid out to a price that I thought was fair, so I told them to come do it. Mateos is very much a guy who wants to do more work than you may have and he will point out things you can do - and they are usually dead on. But he isn't looking to push work, he is truly just pointing things out. Anyhow, the lawn he installed is awesome (i'd take a picture right now, but it's the middle of the night). His team did a ton of cutting around an irregular walk way and it looks seamless. He tiller'ed the existing soil and added in a bunch of new healthier soil and amendments. Rolled it all out to flatten it and then brought in the sod. Please note; this all hand to be done by hand due to access to the backyard. It looks great. He hooked up a newly bought fancy water timer for me, and my wife and I couldn't be happier. He did not stop there though - my controllers for the front yard were in some horribly bad shape. They had, in essence, sunk into the ground about 2 feet and were completely covered with dirt and plants and such. He dug them out, raised them up above the ground, replaced them all, tested and we were back in business. That was the scope of the work at first. Halfway through as we were liking what we saw, we decided to have him build a fence in a very awkward area of the yard (house is on a bit of a hillside). Took him a few days to figure it out, but he got it put up and it looks terrific. He mimic'd my neighbors fence so that this fence didn't stick out. Going forward, we are going to ask him to do a number of other things in both our back and front yards. The company has proven itself beyond any doubt. I picked Mateos gardening because of the stellar reviews on Yelp but to reflect my own experience, I can only give it 2 stars. I was in search of landscaping design services, meaning i have a small background that I would like to make more colorful and was hoping to get some ideas and creativity from the team to achieve that goal. The team came over, took the measurements and came back to me a few days later with their first revision: 6 JPEG pictures of a 3D rendering, only 3 of the backyard and none of my asks had been factored in. It basically consisted in "remove all the current plants and replace with grass" No one needs landscaping design for this :( The next revision was a bit better but still, very few pics and I had to ask for the details of the design which i felt should be part of the standard package. I stopped here since it was clear they were not up to the task, still paid what was agreed upon early on and left disappointed. On the pro side, the team is fairly responsive and pleasant to work with but that's not nearly enough to compensate the cons. read more
