Walking into a new salon can feel intimidating--especially after having past experiences where stylists fried my thin, fine hair. But from the second I walked in, every single stylist looked like a model, yet they made me feel so welcome and hyped me up without even trying. An employee offered me a drink right away while I waited, and then I met Hannah. She was warm, professional, easy to talk to, and genuinely interested in helping me figure out a plan for my hair. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted, but she talked through everything with me and we landed on a cut and balayage that turned out better than I could've imagined. What made the experience even more special was the energy of the whole salon. Justyne (an owner and brow/skin specialist) popped in and included me in conversation with her and Hannah like I was part of the crew. Kelee, another owner, came over in between clients, cracking jokes and chatting with us. And right next to me was Lindsay, who was doing extensions and talking about how much she loves her work--her attention to detail was amazing and her vibe was just as kind and genuine as everyone else's. It's rare to find a place where the talent, atmosphere, and customer care are all this good. I left with beautiful hair and a full heart. No greeting when we walked in. We sat there in silence for minutes before she abruptly asked us "what are you here for" which caught me off guard. I responded to let her know we had an appt. She looked at me with a rude and confusing look and said "what!?" Literally the oddest check in experience I've ever had at a salon. We won't be back. Sooo many salons out there that have great customer service and make toy feel welcome! This is not one of those salons.

My wife went to Rustic Roots in Sedro Woolley to get her hair colored. This was a treat for…read moreherself, and she was so excited. Her stylist "Cotori" was new, and what followed warranted this one star review. Citori left the toner in for 20 minutes with my wife's head in a bowl. Uncomfortable best describes that portion of experience not to mention this error extinguished the highlights all together. What a colossal screw up. Next, after being warned by my wife that her hair is already thin and fragile, and it was once caught in a drain by another stylist a few years back at a salon in Edmonds, Citori assured my wife that wouldn't happen. Over the far too long, 3.5 hour appointment that dragged on, Citori did I fact anage to Knott my wife's hair and had to cut out a huge chunk of it which was devastating ti my wife. This visit resulted in loss of hair and no difference in color to the tune of $155.00. Worst of all, my wife contacted the salon owner Heather Middleton who said she was unable to provide a refund and suggested my wife return for another re-coloring. This should have never been offered because recoloring right after a recoloring treatment would have damaged her hair further. When my wife questioned Middleton about this offer to recolor, she agreed it was tii early to do that. After offering a conditioning treatment, Middleton stopped all further communication. Middleton should have refunded my wife, no questions asked. Instead, she excused her obligation to do the right thing by saying the stylists are independent. That should have had no bearing on the decision to refund. For that poor customer service decision, she gets this horrible review.

A call and a few weeks later, I found myself in a cool black seat with Brenda over my shoulder. She ran her fingers through my mane and assessed the photo I brought as an example. My hair was too dark to achieve the lift and tone my tween fantasies hoped for in one session, but she'd go on to wrangle my hair into an appropriately edgy look regardless. The neck massage lavished on me during the hair wash was divine, and I sipped my complimentary espresso drink with glee. By my second visit I let Brenda take an idea and run with it, despite some reservations: thick, blunt-cut bangs. Toby even pitched in to get them even. They were phenomenal, and I noticed several acquaintances get the same look within weeks of the cut. It's now been almost 10 years, and I still see Brenda every 6-8 weeks. She has been with me through ombre, bangs, bobs, and more. Over a year ago I posed for a competitive photoshoot for her and trusted her to give me a chartreuse chop. Weeks later, Toby razored it down on stage after Brenda dyed it dark hues of blue and green in front of dozens of stylists at a Paul Mitchell event on Bainbridge Island. The whole experience was a hoot. While I was working with a local nonprofit that fights poverty in the community, I also recruited several Experience stylists to participate in an event that provided free hair cuts to people experiencing homelessness. That was in 2015 and they have been participating ever since. The whole Experience Salon crew is fantastic. It's been an absolute pleasure to see their business grow and thrive. Since that first fateful visit, I've now recruited my mom, stepmom, their friends, my friends and many others for their own "experience." If you're looking for a professional 'do on a budget, keep in mind that they often have "New Talent," or beginning-level stylists who offer less expensive services than their pros. But if you're willing and able to spend, I recommend Brenda--just be sure to plan ahead, she's booked weeks in advance! You can even make it a one-stop shop and get your waxing and makeup needs done, men's waxing included. Still not convinced? Their new spot in olde town Mt. Vernon is tranquil and sophisticated without being stuck-up or uncomfortable (we've all been to those spas: no bueno, and that's not this place). This team of skilled technicians makes this fabulously cool salon what it is, and not only has my hair always turned out just right, everyone I've brought here (of which there have been many) has been beautified to perfection. -- MY DETAILS -- This salon is truly a local staple: it was founded by the Mom of my go-to colorist Colleen. It's now changed locations, names, and hands over the years, but it is and always will be a family-style run business. In the years I've gotten my hair done by this team, I've NEVER ONCE seen any client leave unhappy, and I've been a client since I moved here in 2007... so long ago that was at their original location: where "FIVE GUYS BURGERS & FRIES" sits in Burlington! Several stars go to my miracle-worker Colleen. She took me from bland mousey brown to my true self: a vibrant ginger! She and Tiffany (Tiff is great at cuts, esp for both sexes) also helped get my style back after surgeons literally shaved half my head straight up the back (no joke... brain surgery does that to you). They got me back looking decent even when I felt nowhere near it. Colleen has been patient and kind with my forgetfulness & headaches & pain that causes me to reschedule far too often. The entire staff is friendly and fun, and many of whom I've since learned are childhood friends, which adds to the calm, friendly atmosphere here. So whether you're a new face or a long-time client, you'll feel welcomed as well as fantastic. She made him feel as if she has the appt arranged for either service (since after all it was a superset) Fast fwd to the day of my birthday appt, my boyfriend drops me off. The stylist aka Melissa who happems to also be the shop owner, then proceeds to inform me we only had an hour booked and could only do a haircut. Offers no apology, no care, no concern what so over. Just lazily keeps saying all we can do is a haircut.... When I explained the situation & understanding of how the appt was booked her response was literally "I'm sorry that they told you that but we would never book an appt without knowing" As is this surprise was made up.... Completely unwilling to work this out for a new client. Completely unapologetic to the situation & offers no fix to said issue. No offer of another appointment.. In a time where small businesses are dependent upon their customers, Melissa the shop owner sure did screw her way out of $400 this day. Her customer service was horrible. She offered no real apology, no ounce of empathy & no desire to try and fix what they messed up. Simple lazy response to what was supposed to be a special day. I wouldn't give a dime to a salon that gives no effort in making their clients happy. And this all falls on the shop owner. What an example you are setting for your employees to follow Melissa I can assure you, treat enough people this way and your salon will be non existent. On a brighter note...I only had to take a short walk down the Main Street to find a salon that was more than willing to take Genisis services & you better believe the whole salon heard of the experience you just gave, Melissa. As a neighboring salon, they could not believe you took no effort in making This right. Glad to not have given you a dime.
