Our experience at this location was so impressive that we went out of our way to look up other locations closer to our home. From the moment we walked in, the service was exceptional. We were greeted immediately, and the presentation throughout the restaurant reflected a high standard of cleanliness and care. The dessert display was showcased in a clean glass case, and the overall environment felt welcoming and well-maintained. The cashier took the time to explain how the dishes were prepared and presented, and even shared that the fruit drinks were freshly made. That level of attention and pride in the food made a strong impression on us. The dining area, drink station, and even the silverware were all clean and polished. The food itself exceeded expectations. The steak dish was tender and juicy, with flavor that truly stood out and left us wanting more. The salad was made with fresh ingredients, and the burger was especially memorable, the beef was so rich and flavorful, the vegetables were crisp and fresh, and it was clearly assembled with care, even secured neatly with a pick. This location stands behind its motto. We were so impressed that we ordered additional food to go. Because of that experience, we visited another location expecting the same level of quality. Unfortunately, it was a completely different experience. The difference was so significant it felt like going from a high-end restaurant to something far below that standard. It was surprising and disappointing, especially given how exceptional the Mission Valley location is. The Mission Valley location clearly operates at a level that meets and even exceeds the brand's standards. I sincerely hope that leadership ensures other locations are held to that same level of quality, service, and consistency. Came for dinner with a friend, we showed up and there were 2 kiosks and 1 person working the register. A couple couldn't figure out the kiosk and the solo person working the register was busy taking orders, so with one kiosk moving, we had to wait maybe 15 minutes just to order at the kiosk. Which was somewhat irritating with the amount of DoorDash and pickup orders coming in and out of the only entrance where we were all waiting to order. I ordered the grilled chicken with chimchurri, herb roasted potatoes, and Moroccan chicken braise. My friend ordered the beef braise with mashed potatoes and a side of fries. Overall the food was okay, the potatoes were quite oily, and the mashed potatoes on the beef braise were lukewarm and cold in the middle. The braise itself was heavy on the red wine. I believe the side of fries was around $8 and the amount you get is definitely not worth the price. I get it's a healthier options restaurant, so portions may not be as big, but there are plenty of other healthier choice options in the area I would choose over this one. read more

With a heavy heart, I had to cross this location off my list. I love Urban Plates; it's my favorite casual dining restaurant. Every chance I get to have the steak salad and mango tart makes my heart do the "Hercules" dance. Look up the other San Diego locations, and you'll find my raving love song for this chain. Since the Mission Valley spot has opened, I've stopped by at least five times for lunch and picked up dinner on the way home from work for myself and my boyfriend. Unfortunately, every visit has had something wrong with my food. Once the mangos were old and soggy, and every other time, the steak was either overcooked or undercooked, just like it was during this visit (see photo). I've held out each time, hoping that the next visit would be great, but sadly, that hasn't been the case. Instead, I picked the Urban Salmon Caesar Salad & a bowl of tomato basil. And since I was still at the register mid order, a Strawberry Basil Lemonade seemed tasty to wash everything down with. And why not have the Mango Tart for a lil nibble and takeaway? I was satisfied with the comforting tomato basil. The buttery homemade croutons and buttered rustic bread were great to dip in. Perfect portion of the salmon and the leafy Romaine lettuce was coated with lots of dressing! (Not a fan when there isn't enough dressing). Some of the mango slices looked bruised and it didn't look appealing. Our second visit was a few days ago & we came on a Saturday during lunch time. Parking can be a bit hectic, but- you'll find something! It was a perfect day to utilize their huge shaded outdoor patio, since our current weather had us in the high 80s, for early March. We were lucky enough to find an indoor table to enjoy the air conditioning. With the busy weekend lunch rush, staff worked swift to bus empty tables & to remove empty dishes from occupied tables. I still had the intention of ordering the Asian Chicken Noodle Salad & changed my mind once I go to the cashier. Instead I went for the Braised Moroccan Chicken & mashed potatoes. This plate does come with a slice of rustic bread. And I figured, a cup of Seafood Chowder. On my visits, this place has been good and consistent. We love that. I always recommend Urban Plates to friends when that "what should we eat for lunch" decision pops up. Urban Plates offers a wide selection of small bites and entrees ranging from protein packed plates to vegan options, plus desserts that actually taste good. There is something for everyone. For first timers the system might feel a little confusing because it is very different from your typical sit down casual restaurant. You start by ordering at the kiosk or with a cashier. The placement of the kiosks can create a buildup of customers toward the entrance though. During this visit one of the two kiosks was down so there was a bit of a wait. After ordering you grab a number from the basket next to the kiosk and enter that number into the kiosk to link it with your order. From there grabbing utensils, water, condiments, and napkins is all on you. Honestly I do not find this frustrating like some other reviews mention. I would rather grab what I need myself than wait for someone else to do it. It feels easier and more efficient which is exactly what Urban Plates provides. There is a lot of seating here. Outdoor patio seating and plenty of indoor tables as well. It also seemed like a hotspot for corporate lunch outings and takeout orders. Even with the amount of people dining in there was still enough seating for everyone. I invited a friend here to catch up and the environment was perfect for that. It is not too loud but not too quiet either, so it is easy to talk and catch up. We both ordered the chimichurri steak plate which comes with two sides. I chose mashed potatoes with gravy and tomato soup. My friend got mashed potatoes with gravy and a side salad. An employee dropped off my plate first and then hers about five minutes later. From the time we sat down it took about fifteen minutes to get both plates. I love the rustic bread they serve with each entree. It has a crispy crust with a chewy interior that is not dry at all. It paired perfectly with my tomato soup. The portions here are always fair. The steak plate is about $22 but it feels reasonable for the quality. Our steaks were both cooked perfectly and the chimichurri tasted fresh and very herbaceous. Both plates came with a generous scoop of mashed potatoes which is a plus!!! My tomato soup was still hot even after waiting a few minutes for my friend's plate. The croutons stayed crisp through the meal while soaking up some of that rich tomato flavor. In the past I have also tried their hummingbird cake and mango tart and both were amazing. This time I did not have room for dessert because the portions are generous, but I definitely recommend saving space. We returned today to see if there have been any changes since our last visit, and we were delighted to find that the food is still delicious and the staff remains exceptionally supportive. While we prioritize service over food photography, we believe a five-star experience is defined by how a team handles the details. Although this is primarily a self-service establishment, we received wonderful "hands-on" assistance today. We were both feeling quite tired, so we truly appreciated how Robert and Santiago ensured we had everything we needed, from extra napkins and refills to to-go boxes. When we arrived we asked how to order and were given three options including someone coming to the table. I got up to ask where the gravy is for the mashed potatoes that she specifically asked if I wanted it with gravy. Then I got up to ask for the salad dressing that wasn't put on the salad. I was looking for something fast but high quality in the Mission Valley area that I could take to a park to meet my friend for lunch. There was a gentleman in a chef coat with a little headset standing over by the line and a sign that said to pick up to go orders. I told him my name and boom food in hand and I'm out of there. I got the superfood salad. It was good, but not quite what I was expecting, although that's probably my fault because I quickly ordered it without really looking. I thought from the picture it was going to be a little bit more hearty and that there were beats on it but the red things in the picture were actually little Craisins lol. There were some chickpeas on the salad, but not very many. The blue cheese was a perfect compliment to the sweetness of the Craisins and the fresh mandarin slices. Not the kind that come out of the jar! I've got to say, though, it was delicious and a very generous portion and the rustic bread that came with it was outstanding. I asked for the dressing to be served on the side because I prefer to use mostly olive oil on my salad with just a touch of the dressing. The salad was $16 plus tax. I was pleasantly surprised with the good amount of chicken they put on the salad. They used whole stem Romain lettuce, which I appreciated. The salad came with a very good amount of Parmesan cheese, great house made croutons, and a grilled slice of ciabatta. The salad came with un-traditional cherry tomatoes, but they worked well with the salad, hence the name "Urban Caesar." It was a very good salad and I would order it again. One option at this eatery is to choose a protein (and there are several to choose from) and then 2 sides. Selection is good, and portion size, freshness of ingredients, and presentation are all good. But, I would like to have quinoa or brown rice as side options, also a whole grain bread would be preferable to standard white. One reason why I won't return with friends is that there is annoying muzak that is too loud and totally unnecessary (it doesn't add a thing to the dining experience!). I asked an employee if he could please turn down the volume so that my friends and I could talk and hear each other, but he stated that he was unable to do so. We ordered our steak medium rare, and right away I noticed it didn't look quite right, but I tried to let it go. After a few bites, there was a lingering bitter, burnt taste that became hard to ignore. I flipped the steak over and saw that the entire bottom was burnt. At that point, it made sense why it tasted off, but unfortunately I had already eaten part of it. For a steak ordered medium rare, this was disappointing. Urban Plates launched a soft opening last week, and upon arrival, I turned around and left due to the large crowd. The official grand opening was two days ago, I made sure to avoid the crowd and visited pass lunch time, no crowd. Order at the counter, take an number and the food will be brought to your table. Indoor and outdoor covered patio seating. It was my first time visit to any Urban Plates. But I'm familiar with plate offerings as being synonymous to True Food Kitchen. Urban Plates mantra is 'Chef-driven fast-casual restaurant serving craveable & nutritious scratch-made plates, salads, sandwiches & bowls. Dine-in, to-go, catering, & delivery, ' so I felt at ease as I waited for my plate, until my wait time was longer than reasonably expected :( When my order of sustainable grilled salmon, organic mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts arrived I was glad all was plated nicely and appealing. The cup of tomato basil pesto soup was a nice starter. The salmon was good but on the dry side, possibly due to it being cooked sans skin. A Dijon mustard condiment came with the salmon, but I prefer the salmon without any sauce. The sides of organic mashed potato was ok but the roasted brussel sprouts were undercooked, a tad too crunchy to eat. And to be honest the entire plate of food was not hot or warmed up as expected :( I informed the server and staff and they all offered to plate another meal, but at that point, I was not inclined to wait. Glad the staff and one of the managers did take the time to listen to my concerns and they tried to remedy the situation by explaining that it's all due to the newness of the staff in training and restaurant opening. Will give them the benefit of doubt, nonetheless my dining experience had diminished. Because of the staffs efforts, I will be generous and rate them from a 3 to a 4 star. The fresh mango tart deserves a 5 star, it's floral design and taste was not too sweet, just lovely! A slice of the flourless chocolate cake I took togo and later enjoyed it, also not too overly sweet, but the ganache was a tad goowey... Shrimp was the best part of the plate actually. Our other entree was a 2 chicken tender plate with a side of mac and a Caesar salad. Checked out Urban Plates new location in Mission Valley. I had seen videos of a line so not sure what to expect. Came here on Wednesday evening around 7pm, and there was no line. They have a sign outside with the different food items with pictures. It was my first time and thought what was pictured was what it came with, so I didn't know that you chose your sides. There are a lot of side options! I opted for the grass fed steak with chimichurri with sides of the marble potatoes and balsamic brussels sprouts. I thought the potatoes were a little too salty for my liking, brussels sprouts were fine, but the steak was tender. Not sure if the chimichurri was worth extra couple dollars though. It was decent size place, nice inside. There is a lot of items on the food menu, from salads to burgers and vegetarian options. I will definitely go back and try more of their menu items! read more

I saw that they had a pre-opening event and am so glad we signed up! There was ample parking in the lot. We live in Mission Valley and really appreciate having an additional healthy food spot nearby. It was the perfect opportunity to try out their food. They gave out cookie and limeade samples. The chocolate chip cookie was delicious! I was eyeing the mango tart the entire time while waiting in line to order, so I wish they had samples of that too. Will definitely be back to try it! Came here to the grand opening& was not disappointed. They served& maintained structure& patience with well over 50 people piling in at once! We were lucky to be the last 2, BUT the managers extended it a bit more to the last few 10 in line. Because they were waiting as well. It's definitely the small, kind gestures that really count! Parking is pretty available within a large plaza, but it is right next door to a Breakfast Republic. So you might have to drive around or wait a little. The set up is basically cafeteria style; order, take a number& seat yourself. Then they bring your food to you. They had a good amount of seating inside and outside in the patio. They are dog friendly I saw as well. (They had a water bowl by the door to the patio.) What we had ordered: Tzatziki Grilled Chicken Plate with yellow rice& hummus w/ pita which also came with a slice of bread. Also a side of brussel sprouts. - The chicken was grilled but it was super soft like it was boiled. I loved the hummus&pita, especially since the pita was deep fried which was totally different than the regular pita I've had. It was a semi crunch on the outside while the middle was still soft. The Tzatziki sauce was creamy&thick which was cool for me too. The water station had some togo containers where the balsamic vinegar&olive oil were too, so I packed a little to try with my sliced of bread. I could definitely did WITHOUT it. It was a bit to hard for my gums. - The brussel sprouts were just eh.. it's ok, it didn't have that semi crunch I crave, but it wasnt soggy. Lemonade & Green Sencha Limade - I agreed, these were fresh for sure. Both were super sour/tangy though. So grab a few sugar/0cal sweeteners by the water station before you sit down! Stopped in randomly to get lunch to go...I was not aware an UP had opened at this location. Fabian up at the front ordering area was very kind and attentive as he took my order and offered suggestions. Very friendly and helpful. I hope the restaurant knows they have someone great up front, making customers feel welcome and offering his assistance. Also...while I was waiting for my order, the Manager (I believe it was the Manager?) asked me what I was waiting on and sped up my order, since I was standing there. (I will order ahead online if I go back). Thought that was also very kind, and I appreciated the great customer service. 5 Stars for great Customer Service and kindness! 100% recommend. read more

The most common plate is to order a protein choice with two sides; however, they do have bowls, burgers, sandwiches, and salads. I enjoyed the ahi tuna and sides. I was looking for a healthy meal because an appointment ran late and I was too hungry to cook. It's so hard to find good options on the go. I now have my go-to! Not only was the food delicious, but the ambiance was inviting. Every staff member smiled at me and was very polite and professional. The music was soothing and at a reasonable volume. Ok let me just say I love me some urban plates! I'm usually make the drive down a couple times a week/bi-weekly. I live in east county so it's a little bit of a drive for me, but totally worth it. Although my food yesterday was not the greatest. I got the cob salad that was missing my avocado and egg, I love y'all but that's the point of the cob salad!!! The kids meal steak was sooo chewy there was barely any meat to eat (and if you know kids they are not happy when they can't eat a meal they wanted). I called the restaurant a few times but the phone just keeps ringing, so I'm hoping this will reach someone. UPDATE: It's 3 days later and still nothing. I've called again and phone just rings.
