Booking an appt was easy online. On-site staff was professional. Facilities are relaxing, and clean. I scheduled a 55 min massage, was done in 45 min, 95% was spent on my back vs full body. Much of massage done with arm vs hands. No time spent on the front of my body. Some benefit on my back, zero value on rest of service. Dissapointed. One of the worst massages I've ever had. If you need a prenatal massage, look no further! I sit at a desk all day and work long hours. Mariah has worked out miracles on my upper back and hips in the last month. First of all I have to give a shout out to the staff at The Amway Grand Plaza. We were only in town for one day and they were all booked up for massages so they recommended Urban Massage. It is somewhat reminiscent of Miracle on 34th street and I my wife and I really appreciated the referral. Anna was phenomenal. She did our massages back to back (cleaning and sanitizing between of course). I wish we lived closer to Grand Rapids because we would definitely get her for a massage again. Friendly and professional, she quickly determined the appropriate level of pressure and areas to focus on then went to work. Like most massages, it was over too quickly but we got every mi Ute we paid for and came out refreshed and rejuvenated. Urban Massage is a great find for my self care. Like many of us, I have lower back pain thanks to a minor back injury in 2012 + sitting at a desk for most of my waking hours. My therapist, Elliot, understands my problem areas and knows how to address them during deep tissue massages *plus* provides stretches/exercises that I can do in between my sessions. I've already seen an improvement in my back pain and everything that's connected to it (shoulders, hips, etc.) The space is clean, stylish, and relaxing. I always feel comfortable and well taken care of. They check me in quickly, Elliot is always ready within minutes of my arrival, and they have water (and tea, if I want it) as I check out. Logistics: You can book appointments online via the MINDBODY app, but you may have to wait a week or two, if you want a popular time (like after or before work). I really enjoy the massages here! I've been coming for the past 3 years and they have consistently good quality massages. I've tried most of the therapists and have loved the majority of my massages. I always get deep tissue massage or ashiatsu and have a great result. The therapists are open to your suggestions of what has worked in the past (i.e. stretching, etc) and do a great job working on problem areas. I always leave feeling relaxed and that I've gotten my money's worth! They always are kind, professional and make sure that the pressure they use is appropriate. Prices are slightly higher than other places, but in my experience, the quality of the massage is worth it. Free parking in front on the street or in the back of the building in a small lot. There is a reduced price if you become a member and get monthly massages. Very clean, peaceful space. You can use an app to book online, which I really like! While visiting my boyfriend in Grand Rapids, we decided to look for a place for me to get a massage because of some back pain I was struggling with. We were out and about so walked in to inquire, as he had recently met one of the massage therapist that worked there. He was greeted warmly with eye contact, I was not. I'm not that familiar with Grand Rapids so I expected to be treated as I normally would when I walk into an establishment in a normal city. I'm an educated , professional black woman from Chicago, while my boyfriend is white. I immediately felt a sense of snobbish superiority from the receptionist. I decided to shrug it off. We asked a few questions and asked if they had availability that day. By this point the receptionist seemed to have warmed up a little. She stated that they had an opening at 3 but would see if someone could take me sooner. Which was very nice and considerate of her. As she is looking into it, one is the massage therapist came out, and she asked her if she would take me. Even though I was standing right there, this girl/woman didn't acknowledge me, smile or anything and pretty much refused even though she was open. The receptionist asked her a couple of times and to make it easier and because I wouldn't want the negative energy of that masseuse anywhere near me, I let the receptionist know that it was no problem for me to wait until the 3:00 opening. (It was about 2:15 at this point). The receptionist offered me water or tea, which again, was very nice if her. As I sat and waited I chatted with the receptionist about the town and things to do. I witnessed approximately 3-4 people come out after receiving there services. They were asked how it was and we're all given water and told to stay hydrated. The normal things you hear after a massage. Finally, close to 3, my masseuse Chelsea came out and introduced herself and walked me back. She was very sweet and she did a great job. As I walked out and back towards the reception area, my boyfriend was there waiting for me and had taken care of the payment. Chelsea stood there and nicely said how are you feeling. I said great. I wasn't offered water or any advice. So I asked her is she had any recommendations for me. She recommended a stretch that could help. I then asked her if she thought, due to the injury I had in my back of it would be good for me to come back and how often. She said yes and said maybe every 2 weeks to a month. Here's my problem with this last part. In any normal situation, wouldn't the masseuse suggest me coming back if they knew it would help?! And it would be business for them. I literally saw her have a conversation with an earlier client about coming back. Giving him water after his massage. Why didn't she offer me a card? Or water. Why did I have to pull teeth for a recommendation? Does she not want the business? I told her i would take her card as I knew I would be back regularly in the area, but after much thought and consideration, I will never go back to that establishment. I felt as if they don't have many black people frequent their establishment and possibly that they didn't want me or any other black person in their establishment. Is this Urban Massage or is this how things are in the little ho dunk town of Grand Rapids?! So, I'm giving the receptionist 3 stars and the establishment 1. She's so nice and friendly, and will work with you to provide as much pressure as you need - she's so well trained that she can locate and work on any muscle knots you may have, and even incorporates ashiatsu into her routine. Obnoxious experience. Here is the experience when trying to book an appointment for an ill parent. - Called to book an appointment during business hours and received a voicemail -Did not leave message figuring I would call back at a better time -Received a call back from them about an hour later informing me that I called and they missed it. This is a nice gestures, but I did not leave a message because I wanted to call back when I had the time, not wile working -We found a mutual time and right before hanging up was told by the way we need you credit card information -After explaining that I do not have my parents credit card information, I was asked for mine - When asking why they need that they said we require it up front in case you do not show up -I have booked several massages at several places in the past and never had this issue. What type of business starts a relationship with a new client with an attitude of hey we don't trust you. While I am sure that there are some people who do not show up, I am also sure the vast majority do. For those that do not, this is just a cost of doing business. Imagine trying to schedule work on your car and having to give your credit card just I case you don't show up so you can be charged. - Simply an obnoxious experience.
