Upper Arlington's department of Lifelong Learning (a division of the city's Parks and Recreation…read moredepartment) is a great way to explore a whole gamut of adult, self-enrichment. I currently teach armchair travel and history seminars for Lifelong Learning, but have also taken a bunch of different classes through this program, including yoga, pottery, craft and cooking classes. The instructors are reputable professors, tradespeople and professionals within their industry. Prices vary depending on how many sessions are taught for the one class. A class like pottery will meet 7 or 8 times and the cost is around $100, whereas my one-class travel or history seminars only cost about $18-$20 for a 2-hour presentation. Cost is also based on whether or not you are a resident of Upper Arlington. The difference isn't very much for non-residents, but there is a slight price break for those who live in the neighborhood. If you want to explore your artistic side, drawing, photography, oil painting, watercolors, and craft classes are among the offerings. If you prefer something more physical, choose from a variety of fitness, meditation and dance courses. Each quarter also brings random "one-off" seminars focused on topics like speed reading, local history or political issues. Classes are offered year-round and catalogues come out every quarter. The classes are open to the public and you can register on line, via telephone or the sign-up form in the catalogue, which you can request be mailed to you.

Gaining new skills in a fun environment? That's a big "hell yes!" in my book…read more I attended one of Level Up Louisville's first classes a year or two ago -- a mixology class where I actually got to make cocktails in Copper & Kings rooftop bar space. And finally my husband and I got to take in new class last week -- "Monetizing Your Home with AirBnB." We had been thinking about maybe one day renting out one of the units in our duplex through AirBnB. This seemed like a great opportunity to dip our toes in a bit. That's really one thing I very much appreciate about Level Up Louisville -- the range of class topics. So for $35 each, we got spots in the class, which met in the home of a local AirBnB superhost. The dozen or so of us started with a glass of wine and chatting in our host's gorgeous Old Louisville kitchen. And then we went up to her AirBnB unit, which was an expertly decorated top-floor studio. Up there, we talked about a range of topics, such as selecting guests, fixing up your unit, deciding what aspects of a unit to invest in, what to do about problem guests, what permits you need, etc. By the time we left, my husband had an entire page of notes, and we had so much more to think about than we had originally expected. When we left, my husband even remarked how impressed he was and how the class was worth every penny of the $70 we spent. It's safe to say that this class won't be my last. One other quick thing to note: If you take a class, don't be "that guy," who comes in as a student but ends up taking over the class, mansplaining all over the teacher. We get it -- you know things. But if you're over-talking the host, speaking up more to try and answer other students' questions rather than ask your own, you are not helping. We didn't pay to hear you speak; we paid to hear her.

I just finished my first class with Made Stitch, and I can't wait for my next project!…read more Signing up for a class was easy. The website lists what age the class is for (kids, teens, or adults), the project and what pattern will be used, and the level of difficulty. There are classes for people who have no sewing experience, up to confident sewists, and everything in between. With your registration, you get the pattern, fabric, thread, and any other materials needed to successfully complete the project. Just show up ready to learn and create! The studio is at the Mellwood Arts Center, easy to find and plenty of parking. It's also well marked once you get to Mellwood, so I had no problem finding the studio. Inside the studio is gorgeous, with a lot of natural light. There are 16 new sewing machines, with four ironing tables, two huge cutting tables, and everything a class needs to complete any sewing project. I took the skirt sewing class for adult advanced beginners- those who have basic sewing experience and have practiced within the last year. There were four students in the class, all who knew a little about sewing but wanted more guidance. The class was scheduled for two four-hour blocks, and we actually went over on time the 2nd day. This was the first time this class was offered, so it's hard to know how long things will take, so keep that in mind when looking at your schedule. We had everything we needed to take our measurements, trace and cut the pattern, and sew the skirt. Lyndsey explained everything we needed to do very clearly, and helped us when we had l questions. It was a great learning atmosphere, with music playing and questions and conversation. Even though I'd made a few garments before, I learned a ton of information about the process of garment sewing. The time and cost of the class was an amazing value, because learning the same amount of information and making as nice of a garment would've taken me hundreds of hours and probably hundreds more dollars in failed projects! After taking a class at Made Stitch, I feel excited about sewing, whereas on my own I'd sometimes get frustrated. Now I feel inspired to make my own project right away, so I can practice some of the very valuable information I learned! Like I said, I'll be keeping an eye out for my next class to take, and I'd recommend Made Stitch to anyone interested in sewing, of any age or skill level!

Ms. Lyndsey is patient and kind with her students and really encourages them to try their best. The projects they work on are cute but also functional; they practice with pillows, bags, and shirts they can actually wear. It makes the skill of sewing more approachable and practical rather than fanciful. My daughter enjoyed her first session so much, she can't wait to enroll again!
