I got a bit lost finding this place the first time. For the newbies - you can only turn into the carpark from College Rd inbound. It's a small turn-off immediately after the overpass. Then you can park and make your way across the footbridge in the sports centre, and downstairs to the gymnasium.
There are a range of classes available, mostly in the areas of strength training and tumbling, focusing on technique and skill development. The classes are all held in the same room - a large, open, gymnastics-oriented area with sprung flooring, trampolines, foam pits, rings, bars etc. Everyone warms up together and does a final stretch together, but otherwise separates into sections with the class-specific coach.
I tried a strength training class for 2 hours for my first time. There were 7 of us doing that class, and we were all at different levels of skill and strength. It was my first time using most of the equipment, but the coach and everyone in the class was friendly and willing to help me out with everything. What I really liked about the class was that you made it as hard as you wanted, and to suit your level of ability. As an example, on the rings apparatus I spent my time learning how to hold on, hang and a small amount of actually getting my feet off the ground. It's harder than it looks! Others were doing full muscle-ups and L-sits. Despite the different ability levels it didn't feel intimidating or competitive at all, just as long as you gave it a good go and challenged yourself then you were doing a good job.
The classes are $20 cash each for a casual attendance but if you are going twice a week or more then you can arrange a direct debit for a discounted rate. Classes run 7pm-9pm, so it can make for a late night during the week, but I can see how it could be a regular thing - the encouragement and motivation to improve definitely helps! read more
