Individual Dog Training Review: Our dog is 4 years old, he's a labradoodle and has always been very high energy when outside or around other dogs. While we should have gotten him properly trained years ago, we didn't. After some research, I landed on Urban Dog House. It was nearby and after reading not only about their methodology but also reviews here and on Google, we signed up for an individual training session with Steve. Over the course of an hour, Steve gave me the proper tools to help our guy meet the goals we had always envisioned. I was really happy with how things went in the classroom but fully expected things to revert when we got back home. Sticking with Steve's methods, I am absolutely shocked how responsive our dog has become. He is no longer the dog that yelps, barks and screeches when another dog is within 1/2 mile of his vision. He still gets excited but we now have the tools to align him with our expectations. I'm really looking forward to having him enroll in the group class next. While I was there, I was able to tour the entire facility and we'll be boarding with Urban Dog House this upcoming weekend. Also got to walk through a group training session and what I saw seemed like a dream - 20 or so dogs and their owners, in a room, dogs laying down, owners not holding leashes. It was amazing. I feel pretty confident our guy will get there eventually! Will also note that the staff there seems genuinely very happy. This review is long overdue -- I boarded my two dogs Max and Cardi back in June for a little over one week. I had never boarded them at a facility prior to this and only used Rover once. My male lab is dog-reactive when on a lead, and my female terrier is very feisty when her big brother is around. This always makes me nervous when I go on vacations leaving them in the care of others, even close family members. Urban Dog House (UDH) minimized my worries right off the bat by explaining their protocols for pups who don't get along with other animals, allowing me to visit their facility before boarding, and sending report cards throughout the week. Per my request, they even allowed Max & Cardi to board together in the same kennel, as I had some concerns that having them separated would cause more stress. Their kennels are big and spacious, so I knew my dogs would be comfortable. Additionally, UDH also has a fridge/freezer, so they were able to accommodate Max & Cardi's dry kibble/raw diet meals. The UDH team, especially Steven, was always responsive and friendly whenever I reached out for updates, so I truly appreciated that. For our first extended stay, I received a discounted nightly rate for my second dog, and upon pick-up, UDH was gracious enough to give both of them complimentary baths. I attached a photo here of how they looked when we finally got home. They looked happy, well-fed, and were free of any scratches/marks. We love Urban Dog House! My boyfriend and I recently got a mini aussie puppy. She is 5 months old and just recently graduated from their level 1 obedience course. We live right across the street and have gone to them many times, including the use of their dog washing station, and many of the pack walks they offer on Saturdays. Dexter is so nice and remembers everyones dogs and their names. He is super knowledgeable and very passionate about what he does, and they have already helped us so much in our training. They also offer dog boarding (that we have yet to try) but we will 100% be using them if we go out of town. Being able to leave our puppy at a familiar place with familiar faces is such a relief! Can not recommend highly enough!!! We kennel our dog (Loki) with UDH at least once a month for a few days at a time (sometimes longer) and I never have to worry about her because I know that she is 100% loved and cared for!!! The owner and staff are absolutely amazing!!! Not all kennels have staff onsite 24 hours but UDH does, that's very important and something you might not think to ask. I know that our little girl is in the best care because all I have to do is say "Cooperhaus" (now known as "Urban Dog House") and she completely loses it!!! She gets SO excited. UDH's training is second to none and they train all breeds, sizes, and all ages BUT they really reinforce that the humans are the ones who really need to be trained. Dogs just want to please us and are incredibly smart, we're the ones that need to be trained. We went on a pack-walk today in downtown Willow Glen and it was great! We can literally take our dog absolutely anywhere and know that she can handle a vast array of stimulation (other dogs, kids, people, loud sounds, busy streets, other animals, etc) with little to no reaction, stress, or anxiety. We recently got three Tibetan mastiff puppy mixes (mocha, nila and cookie) out of the blue back in December 2023 and now are about 8 months old. They've been going to classes once a week about 4 months now and Steve (lead trainer) has been a great help with tips and tricks on how the pups can get along with each other (as they are littermates) and how train the pups at home! Today was their first day at day care we've received report cards, which include pictures, videos, and detailed updates on each of our pups progress. Huge thank you to Steve and Urban Dog House team for the care and hard-work they dedicated to helping our family dog. She came in with aggression issues with our other dogs in the house. We opted for their boarding training where they would also send a report card everyday and send photos and videos of our pup so we could see what she is learning. We brought her home yesterday and she has adapted so well and has made such great progress, we couldn't believe it! On the day of pick up, our family stayed for two hours so we could learn how to correct, new commands (heel, place, break), how we should hold the leash during walks, and how to make our family dog more comfortable. We are beyond grateful for their attentiveness to our family dog and she has shown no signs of aggression or nervousness since we brought her home. We are so happy to have her back. Can't say enough good things about Urban Dog House. I have brought both of my dogs here for obedience training and the methods used are very helpful, safe and effective. They have helped us so much with both our dogs and I really see a difference in our pups when we reinforce the training methods used by UDH. Aside from training we have done boarding and just today swimming. Both were awesome experiences and the staff always makes sure the dogs are enjoying themselves in a safe way. Both of my dogs absolutely love Dexter and enjoy seeing him (we do too) but I'd also like to point out that Steve is also great, organized to work with and we did a puppy class with Juan who was awesome as well and really gave us helpful tips for our nervous GSD. Updated review: we have been bringing our German Shepard Vader here since he was a puppy, and we absolutely love it! We used to be very anti prong collar but we have learned how to safely use them and reinforce good behavior as well. We feel it's much better to know our dog will be safe in public and react to slight discomfort of the prong collar rather than exhibit bad behavior in public and potentially experience a dangerous situation with another dog. Short Version: Urban Dog House is great and I'm so glad to be close to a dog training & play facility! Long Version: My husband and I enrolled our little 1.5 year old Cavapoo to Obedience Level 1 at the beginning of May. While she's a good girl, she does have some people/dog reactivity. We didn't know where to start, so we went to the complimentary eval session where Steve recommended we start with the Level 1 Obedience class (Steve is great btw! He remembered her when he saw her a couple of weeks later :)). The classes so far have been great! Of course it's not going to be an "overnight miracle" where she knows all the commands/listens all the time, but this training I think is more for us vs. for her. At the end of class each week we're sent with things to do for the week and it's progressed from: Heel to Sit to Stay to a mix of it all. It's only been 4 classes so far and she's made huge strides already. Is she perfect when there are tons of distractions? No... but I don't expect her to be. BUT she is understanding the commands and we are working our way up to more distractions and different locations all while still being fun for the both of us. The first time I heard of this place was while at the dog park a gentleman had the most well behaved german sheppard. I was so impressed with his ability to control his dog while the dog was very good about not being distracted. My brother booked a swimming lesson for his dog and i went with him. We heard about this place and decided to give it a try. We put our dog through obedience training. Prior to enrolling my dog, he lunges at people and other dogs, to the point where my wife and I don't look forward to taking Milo in walks anymore. Fast forward to today, we are currently 1 week away from finishing our level 1 class (out of 5 sessions) but I can honestly say that I have seen a HUGE improvement on my dog. The training is not for the dog, but they train you to train your dog. I love being in class for two reasons; socialization for my dog and it's affordable. Urban Dog House is a great training school and I highly recommend them. Both Dexter and Steve truly care about the dog's being compliant, happy in their compliance, with fewer and ultimately no corrections. This philosophy is reinforced in all their training regardless of who you work with or whether you do private, public, or pack walks. You get the sense the trainers really care about your dog and they care about teaching you so BOTH parties are happy and successful. Some highlights: -They offer so many opportunities to train your dog (group classes, private classes, swimming, agility, pack walks....) I have done group classes (currently level 2), private lessons, and have participated in a pack walk. I appreciate the real life settings to put into practice what has been learned in group classes. Additionally, the private lessons I have done with Steve have been very effective and really encouraging. - Dexter and Steve are willing to work with different training tools (flat collar, martingale collar, prong collar, e-collar...). I really value this. They don't force a "type" on you. They also care about the tools being used correctly and that your dog is not being over corrected. I see consistently that they care about your dog and want to make sure communication from the handler to the dog is clear, appropriate, and effective. I think this is super important and I think Dexter and Steve do a great job with this. -They welcome all family members to participate in classes or pack walks (or whatever). It is important for family members/handlers to hear the same message and have the opportunity to practice and ask questions. Not all training facilities allow this and I am thankful Urban Dog House not only allows it, but encourages it. My daughter has done most of the classes with me and therefore the training at home has been more effective. Some notes: -Classes/pack walks etc... tend to run over the allotted time. You can always leave when you need to, but I just plan cushion in my schedule. -The trainers talk a lot (something I notice about most dog trainers :-) and sometimes I wish we practiced more, but what they share is valuable. Bottom line - I am learning, my dog is learning, and our relationship has significantly improved because of the training we have received at Urban Dog House. I would like to give a shout out to the Urban Dog House for the excellent, professional care they give to my 3 dogs. Wether it is boarding for day care or attending one of the events. I have recently brought my Cane Corso in for daycare. I had some special instructions from the veterinary for my Rosebud. Not only was the stay friendly and kind, they were also empathic to my Rosebud situation and took excellent care of her. During the day, the pet parents get a report card on how you dog did through out the day with their pictures attached. My Rosebud had the biggest smile. The staff paid a lot of attention to her needs as well as take her out and play with her. STEVE .. one of the owners. Oh my gosh.. Ill start by saying that until this year, I have never, ever boarded my dogs, because I am a crazy pet mom. and I work in Veterinary Medicine, and I'm overly paranoid about who I trust with my pets... But y'all! Urban Dog House more than delivered!!! My bigger dog is an anxious, reactive, psycho boy, and he very rarely trusts new people. And I have done my best, but he knows what he wants and he knows his limits. And so, when I was preparing to board him for the first time ever, I was (naturally) worried out of my mind! And I was so foolish to be so worried! Urban Dog House, from day 1, respected his boundaries, carefully worked with him, and slowly acclimated him to being walked/cared for by their staff and got him used to boarding! Dexter, who owns the facility, is so incredibly well-versed in canine behavior, it's almost supernatural. My dog very clearly loves him, which is so unfamiliar to me, it feels like a dream. And the staff at UDH are all so incredible in terms of reading the behavior of dogs, and they are so accommodating and patient. I will always be overly anxious when I go out of town, because I will not only miss my pets, but also, I naturally worry if they're happy. Now, I really don't have to worry if they're happy, or cared for. Urban Dog House goes above and beyond to ensure my pups are happy and safe, and therefore, they ease my worries as well. They rock! I brought my dog for daycare here twice - the first time was really good and the second time was really bad. When I picked my dog up the second time from daycare, he was stressed, dehydrated, and not exercised. I overheard the staff saying they took care of 50 dogs that day. They promised to send photos or videos, which they did not do either time I visited. The manager reached out to me later and magically provided me with a video of my dog, but in the video he's crying and bored. This wasn't the right fit for us - my dog has lots of energy and needs to get a ton of exercise in order to be happy, he is a husky cattle dog mix. I also dropped him off with treats and a toy. They lost the toy and gave him none of the treats that I left for him. They also put the dogs in kennels when they're not actively playing. And the play area is quite small. They also tried to charge me a late fee when I wasn't late and kept calling me 'hun' read more

I came across Cooperhaus K9 when searching for a place to train my Dolly. I wanted her to be well trained as a puppy and become obedient once she's older. I emailed my request and came in contact with Steve Huynh the general manager who responded back to my emails in a timely manner. I finally got Dolly seen for her last shot and enrolled her into board and train on Monday 03/23/20. Steve gave me a tour of their building which surprisingly can fit a lot of dogs. Spacious and clean. There's multiple rooms inside the building for puppy class on Sundays, training rooms, lunch room, kennel area, etc. 5 stars for being professional, updating me Dolly stay, and responding back in a timely manner. I currently have a 96 pound boxer/pitbull mix named Arlo. We started training when he was 1-years-old. Dexter and Steve have done private lessons, a home visit, and group obedience classes that have helped him so much. Their professionalism, kindness, understanding of dog behavior and sense of humor is the reason I keep going back. Before I could not walk Arlo due to his constant pulling and dog reactivity. After these training classes our life has completely changed. I can go on a nice stroll around the park with no worries. I am a first time female GSD owner and first brought my puppy here when she was about four months old. The puppy socialization classes were informative and fun, but eventually my girl got too big, so we enrolled her into the group obedience classes. The transition from Karina to Dexter was a BIG difference in terms of their demeanor. They are both knowledgeable and did well with teaching us the basics of sit, heel, and down. However, how we learned to use the prong collar was extremely problematic. We did not learn about the pressure points to walk with a proper heel. Instead, we learned how to do "meaningful corrections", which I strongly disagreed with. The corrections Dexter was looking for were so forceful that they made my dog cry and develop anxiety. He would want us to yank the leash so hard that it would "scare them and make them not want to do that (whatever command the dog did wrong) again". The expectations are definitely high, but scaring a dog for not learning or responding fast enough is not my style. It took us months with a private trainer (outside of this facility) for our dog to gain confidence and lose the anxiety she once had from her negative experiences with the prong. If you like the military style of disciplining your dog, then you will like it here. If you are looking for someone who is compassionate and gentle, look elsewhere. read more

The manager Steve seemed very pleasant over e-mail and reassured me that they would be able to board my two pitbulls last minute during Memorial Day weekend. However, upon check-in, the kennel attendant explained that the dogs at the facility were all within view of each other as they are separated by transparent walls/windows. At this point, I became worried that they were going to be restless their entire stay as I know how reactive they can be, especially my older dog who is canine-aggressive. But, the kennel attendant told me she could send pictures/videos of them, so this (kinda) put me at ease. As for their feeding instructions - when I initially booked their stay online, the website asked what/when to feed the dogs. They literally gave the option of listing AM and PM meals, and any specific meds. (My dogs are on a very strict prescription diet and should be fed 1 cup kibble + 1/2 can wet food TWICE a day, with a calming probiotic added to their AM meals and CBD oil to their PM meals to help ease any anxiety and combat joint issues.) But when we reviewed these instructions, the kennel attendant had listed 2 cups kibble + 1 can wet food ONCE a day, and no mention of the probiotic or CBD oil. She explained that the dogs are normally only fed once a day in the mornings, due to the high volume of guests and to allow time for cleaning. Perhaps they don't have any late evening/overnight staff, and thus have to try to feed the dogs all at once so they can move on to other activities/tasks and close up by a certain time. Anyway, I went ahead and corrected the instructions, and she ensured me that they would feed their second meal as instructed and add in their probiotics and CBD oil. (The only reason I am so strict with their diet is because of all the trial and error it took to regulate their stools/metabolism. When they are fed too much at once, they develop diarrhea; and if Blanca is not fed enough or by a certain time, she tends to elicit bilious vomiting. On the other hand, the calming probiotic and CBD oil has made all the difference with Kyra, helping to reduce the stiffness in her limbs as well as her agitation in the presence of other dogs). When I picked them up, I found that half of their prescription wet food cans they were supposed to receive were unopened - meaning they weren't getting their appropriate daily calorie intake if they were only eating the kibble. I had confirmed their feeding instructions in person, over the phone, and emailed their office directly, so I'm not sure how they still got this wrong. When I was finally able to get in touch over the phone, the staff member claimed they were "mostly being quiet, just curious of their surroundings". I know for a fact my dogs are rambunctious beings and will bark nonstop in new environments, especially where they can see other dogs. Furthermore, when they both got home, they were so exhausted they both just ktfo and have stayed asleep since then - barely only getting up to eat dinner. They didn't even want to get out of bed when I got their leashes, alerting them it was time for walk. So, I'm a little skeptical that they were being "quiet" most of their stay. LOL Regardless, I was just glad I didn't have to hear about any incidents. What was more surprising was that, at check-out, Steve told me they actually didn't give any of the CBD oil at all because they "didn't need it". They also tried slowly introducing Kyra to other dogs - and apparently, she didn't show any signs of aggression. I guess I'm happy to hear that they were fairly well behaved during their stay, but I still would have preferred providing the CBD oil for extra support, or at least got a heads up before making that decision. (Again, the CBD oil also works to combat joint issues and I noticed that Kyra seemed a bit stiff in her hind end when we got back home). I kept hearing about all these photos/videos that would be sent to me... so hopefully I will be able to get those soon. I felt more relief when I picked them up and spoke to Steve in person about their stay, but it would have been nice to feel that same relief while I was actually away from them too. I was shocked yet grateful they even attempted to work with Kyra to socialize with other dogs. Perhaps this place would be better for daycare only or training for my dogs, as opposed to boarding/longer stays. Would definitely like to give this place another chance since it is so close to home and more affordable. read more

Today was my first time taking my dog, Morkie for private training to Urban Dog House, Milpitas and also Morkie's first time being trained by professional trainer even though he's already 3 years old. He is a good boy but is not very social. Juan, the lead trainer/one of the managers was very thorough and made Morkie feel comfortable and even let him ( Juan ) hold his leash.I was surprised. He answered all my questions and gave me a lot of informations. From the day of Morkie's evaluation few weeks ago until today, I see how courtious the employees are. Dexter and his team have helped us transform our two rescue schnauzers. We adopted them in January 2022 and they had had zero socialization; thus, significant problems existing in the world. Hailey had extreme fear and shaking demonstrated with terrified and uncontrollable barking while on walks. Gino is working through significant dog reactivity issues. With patience and consistency, Hailey is now ready for the world. And Gino is significantly better while still a work in progress. Dexter has adapted his teachings to help me get through to each of our dogs who have very different needs and styles. He understands that dog training is as much owner training as pet training, and that different pet:owner combinations may need different cues. read more

I do not want to right a bad review as I feel there is genuine care for the animals however after thinking on it a long time, I feel is it dangerous to not do so. My dog is a fear aggressive boy with an immense fear of strangers. He is a rescue with high anxiety and simply has no trust of strangers. We had a private lesson to evaluate our pup and learn methods since the scheduled assured us they worked with "plenty of aggressive dogs". My dog is FEAR aggressive which means his aggressive behavior is a direct result of fear of his environment/triggers. That is different than a dog that is just aggressive. We were told to yell at our dog and yank the prong collar when he would react to strangers in his space. After our lesson, I actually was in tears because immediately I could tell my boy, who looks up to me for guidance and assurance, was confused as to why I was hurting him for being scared. It is a loaded statement and while I do not feel it was the intent, the "training methods" proposed are abusive and I warn anyone with an anxious dog to avoid all aversive methods when treating anxiety/fear aggression. I am sure that if we continued with this training, our boy would lose trust in us and BECAUSE of us, would have to be euthanized. We found a force free trainer and a veterinarian behaviorist and have seen more progress in a few months than we have in years. Our vet behaviorist informed us that research showed aversives/ punishment often had the opposite effect on dogs that had anxiety compared to those that did not. This information is important and it is so so so important. I do feel as though this trainer DOES love animals, however this training for our dog was wrong and had the potential to make our dog immensely dangerous. My boy was begging to leave the facility and a dog should not feel that way after working with a trainer. Trust your gut. Also, a dog who is afraid of strangers and does not growl/bark/lunge because they are more afraid of punishment is DANGEROUS! Those are all forms of communication that a dog is giving you. Yanking the prong collar(and I mean YANKING IT until our boy was choking) will force your dog to just keep quiet. God forbid one day the "trained" dog that actually is STILL very scared of humans snaps and hurts someone/ends up euthanized. read more

A client of mine referred me to CH K9, and their pit-bull impressed me with her obedience even at a dog park. When I needed a place to board my 1 year 2 month old Siberian Husky Miso for a couple weeks, I decided to give CH a try after reading decent reviews. They were a bit more affordable than another facility I was considering even though it was both out of my budget. I wanted to spoil Miso and they let me do a down payment of my choice which was awesome. I was excited for her to be trained by professionals and they even promised me updates during her stay. Drop off was smooth but after not hearing from them for over a week, I was worried and tried contacting them multiple times. They finally gave me a short response 2 days before pick up. I was still optimistic up until seeing Miso at pick up. She seemed distant and sad. I didn't mind her not getting excited to see me but I realized something was wrong when we got home and she attacked my other small older dog unprovoked. She grew up with him and she never had an aggressive bone in her body. I never seen her act out like that! I chalk it up to her readjusting but a week past by and i notice she has regressed even in her basic commands. We run an in home dog sitting business so she is socialized since young and constantly playing with new dogs but after CH, she became very tense around other dogs. That is going to affect our dogsitting business. Since CH didn't even give me a review during drop off, I decided to reach out to CH. They brushed her new aggression and suggested we go back for a quick evaluation. We make the hour drive and a trainer shows us what they worked on over the two weeks which was only down and heel. When she showed me her heel, she had her own dog down stay in the middle of the room. Every time Miso stepped ahead or looked at her dog or even followed a command too slowly, she would yank the prong collar where Miso would yelp. When I asked for tips on fixing Miso's new aggression towards other dogs, she instructed me to give a strong prong correction every time Miso looks at another dog. That's when I realized why Miso has become dog aggressive. Now she thinks other dogs give her pain!!! They must have punished her every time she was near another dog. I am not against the prong collar at all and I believe in corrections and balanced training but this trainer did not use any rewards. No toys, no treats, only corrections. How is a dog supposed to be motivated to behave if all they get is punishment? Cooperhaus' methods might work well with German Shepherds or police dogs, but I had hope they were experienced enough to understand every dog learns differently. Dog training isn't one size fits all. I am so disappointed in this trainer. Maybe if one of their older trainers or the owner had been responsible for Miso's board and train, things would have been different but I basically threw away $1650 to have a traumatized dog. It's been a year now of hard work to barely reverse the damage they did. Miso would never be the same but at least now, I can recall her before she gets into fight. They told me to contact them again if she doesn't improve but when I did, they just blew off any kind of responsibility for it. Friendly socialized dog becomes aggressive right after board and train? Not a coincidence. They didn't even give me a tour of the facility at drop off. I can't trust them one bit. I would not recommend this facility at all. I'm sure they're good at what they do for certain types of dogs but would you want to take that chance? Their old school methods are just like Caesar Milan's and I'm sure you've heard how he abuses dogs. His show is what it is, a show. All I can do is try to warn anyone that's considering training here. A client of mine also boarded his dog at CH for 4 weeks to work on crate training. When I asked about that, they told me their methods was to either yank the prong or shock them with Ecollar every time the dog even touches the crate. Cooperhaus methods depends solely on the prong collar and is 100% correctional. My client told me he was shocked to see a large class of 25+ dogs of different sizes all in prong collars. Look at the pictures posted online, you'll notice all the dogs have prong collars on and some aren't even fitted correctly! Please don't let your dog be abused here! read more

We had a private lesson this past Tuesday and would like to share our experience . Our puppy Tucker hated the leash so much the the would get mad at me for hours even after taking it off. During the training , Karina was very patient with our puppy. The very next day after the training he is already walking around our house in a leash!! My four children were super happy and impressed. They wanted to know who the trainer was , which of course , I have a picture of them together . Just want to share our gratitude and appreciation we have for our trainer Karina . Thank you !! Was it pricey for our family ? omg yes ! I don't even spend half this amount on my hair. But think of it this way, we love our dog . We are loving owners of Jack and Miska. Jack is our 100lb German shepherd while Miska is our huge bundle of giant Alaskan malamute Jack and. Miska have been going to urban dog since they were 12 weeks old for training and boarding jacks now 2 years and 2 months old. The staff are absolutely fantastic and love our boys as we do so I never have any hesitation entrusting them with their care. Dexter who trained Jack is like jacks second daddy and Jack loves to see everyone their when we drop Off. Steve is also fantastic, friendly and caring and always takes the time to talk to us especially about how the boys are doing. He goes out of his way to send us pictures of the boys while we are away and missing them. I would recommend urban dog to everyone and anyone looking for a caring and professional home for your puppies while your away or at work. The training is also second to none and Jack certainly wouldn't be the dog he is without Dexters guidance.
