Ok cuts, depending on who cuts your hair, at a pretty good price. It's basically a sellers market for these guys, because the only other barber shops nearby are the Belmont and Barber & Co, both of which are overpriced and appointment only, which seems contrary to what barber shops are all about. So back to Uptown. It used to be run by an older French guy who gave lousy haircuts, but it was close and cheap. Then it was bought up by some younger folks who are pretty friendly. Like I said, the haircuts are ok (I've walked out a couple of times saying to myself "it's ok it'll grow out in a week or two"). Consistency seems to be an issue here. I've had great cuts from them and not so great cuts. Another issue here is the wait time. It always seems to be packed, which is no fault of their own, but more often than not I've walked away, not wanting to waste time on my weekend waiting for a trim. read more

Have been getting my hair cut here for a few years now and I really love the place and the people. It's a no fuss barbershop and at $16 you really can't complain. The barbers are all super friendly and get my cut right every time. The music is always different, which can be a little off-putting for some, but I appreciate the diversity. It seems they've become victims of their own success and the first-come-first-served line can get a little hectic, but grab a coffee close by and bring a book and enjoy a classic east van barbershop experience. read more

This place was top notch. No gimmicks or extremely long waits. You walk in and first come first serve. Very well priced. They ask what you want and may offer suggestions. My barber even gave me a crash course on how to style the pompadour and get volume. Good conversation and results were amazing. Small cozy hole in the wall. Nothing fancy but they know what they are doing. They also do beard trims for people who cab grow one. read more

The barber had me sitting facing the door, and I could not see my hair being cut. As a result, I ended up with a somewhat unfinished cut. The next customer was in the seat before i noticed. I need to go have it fixed today. The room is dark and the vacuuming of my head was not very pleasant. Not recommended. Reviewed by my Boyfriend read more

Ok, so I was in bad need of a haircut a few days ago, it was time for my quarterly. My regular barber place, Alfredo's, appears either to be undergoing renovations or is out of business, it was hard to tell, so I had to find a new place. Luckily I was directed to Uptown by a helpful patron at Mitra Canteen. Pierre, the owner I believe, was not very communicative at first but warmed up to us after a bit and we had a good chat while he snipped away. Anyhow, I got a decent haircut at a relatively fair price and if Alfredo's is closed, there is a good chance Pierre will be seeing more of me. Cool thing about the shop is the old barber chairs in the place, I think one is from the forties and another from the late twenties. Also check out the old toys on the windowsill. read more

It was my first time at Uptown, and they had a very old school barbershop style. you walk in, you sit down, wait and then they'll call you up when it's your turn. I had gotten my hair cut from Marco, he was super chill, we talked about movies that he was into as well as he gave me some very good recommendations for places to eat around main st. since i had just moved into the area. the cut was quick and professional, although my hair was a bit longer after my cut then I had wanted, Marco was very informative about why he left my hair in the way he did. and for $16 I could not have asked for better service. the staff is chill and love to shoot the shit with you. if you don't mind waiting due to walk-ins only, this barbershop is definitely the place to hit up. read more

I was on the West Coast for business and my Toronto barber recommended this place because a fellow Ottawa transplant recommended him. Glad I did. I had lunch at a burrito place across the street (see my other reviews) and stopped in here with a client to get lined up. This place is very much a "barber shop" in that you come in, you sit down, you wait your turn, get your cut and you gtfo. I like that. There was no nonsense involved. Andrew was my barber and he asked me a few crucial questions and got right to work. The fade was on point, there was enough left on top to comb around and it didn't look like a bowl cut. I appreciate a quick cut and an old school barber experience. Kudos to Andrew and the Uptown for taking care of me. I'll definitely recommend it to anyone else heading to the west coast. read more

Stopped in and saw that the barber that cut my hair last wasn't there, so I asked if he would be. The response was an unpleasant surprise: I was snapped at and told they don't take appointments, people aren't allowed to choose who cuts their hair. And when I dared to ask what time the barber in question might be coming in, again: more snapping. As much as the first experience I had here was, this exchange guarantees I will not return: I don't want to be around something that treats people that way, let alone risk it being near me with sharp objects. read more

Came in at noon on a Saturday, there were about 5 people ahead of me, but with three barbers working, I was in the chair in about an hour. Ben cut my hair, he was very knowledgeable given my double crown and thick, straight (Asian) hair. We made a plan as to what we would do given the challenges and and how I liked to style my hair. Ben was pleasant and we had a great conversation. I get my hair faded just how I liked it with some education about what I can do for styling. Would definitely come again next time I'm in town. Overall, great atmosphere, great service. read more

Great barber shop. Cut is great. Price is best in town. Nice people. Music is nice, sometimes awesome, sometimes a bit different, always entertaining. Keep it up! read more

Great cut in a traditional setup but with great tunes playing and some really good cut styles being done. Reasonable price which is refreshing too. Really enjoyed it and will keep going back. read more

The guys here are great. Two of them give a great cut, that is Jordi and Mike. Jordi is in Thursday through Tuesday, and Mike is in on Sunday and Monday. Pierre, the owner, is a decent barber, but I think his eyesight might be slipping. His bitter French reparte is funny, but the haircuts are much better by the other two. It is affordable, close by and unpretentious. It beats the one around the corner in every way! read more

Great butcher shop for short fades. More of a hipster joint. Just wish they would be upfront about their abilities instead of winging it on me. read more

Good barber, Quick simple cuts. Friendly, quiet staff $16 standard cut.

I've been going to these guys for about 5 years now and even though I've now moved from the Mount Pleasant area to Coquitlam, I still make it a point to get my hair cut here. It's totally worth it. Marco, Andrew and the rest of the crew are reall great guys that you actually WANT to talk to unlike a lot of places. They do solid cuts and of course, the price is definitely right. The new paint job inside looks great, too! It feels a lot brighter and lighter without feeling like an ultra slick salon type of place. read more

Got in, had to wait but they had some awesome books and mags to read. Great cut for $16, an overall great chop shop, definitely recommending it to all my friends. read more

The guy with the beard really takes care when giving cuts. It's nice to have someone who really wants to do a great job at what they're doing. read more

This is the spot. I just moved to the city from Toronto so I was apprehensive about finding a new barber. Ben was a great guy to chat with. He gave me a great cut and imparted some Vancouver knowledge on me. 100% recommend. read more

Solid dudes, no BS. Stumbled on this place completely by random and wont go anywhere else when I'm working in Vancouver. Feels more like your hanging out having a beer then sitting getting a cut. read more

Cash only, 16$ for a haircut, 22$ for a shampoo (don't really know where they shampoo your hair considering I didn't see a sink).... But I mean I got a good haircut out of the place, considering it was my first time can't really have anything bad to say about the place. read more

Amazing small barbershop. I walked in looking for a cut and Ben helped me right away. Gave me some amazing tips and actually took time to try and perfect my hair, but it was a bit longer than I wanted to wait for my cut to finish. Having asian hair, i knew it was going to be difficult for him to work with but he did a great job, for $16, you cant get the care that they put into a cut. Would come back. read more

Zoylo. Are you still there? I keep popping in to see if you're in. I need your skills...

First off I went to this barber shop and I waited over 30 minutes so I left. Then I thought i would try it again and this time I sat outfront of the store for 4 hours and no one opened shop and there was no sign indicating different hours than those posted. On October 4th, 2012 I called the Uptown Barber Shop for an hour at 5pm to see if thye were open and no answer. I learned they have no phone! How weird for a business. Then i ask to get my head shaved and they only have one clipper that doesnt even shave your head, there is an inch of hair on my head. I told the guy i wanted it very short and that the clippers he was using would not do, he insisted it would be short to the skin. After my haircut, and he charged me $10.00, then he gave me the business card of another place i could go right after my haircut to get it cut shorter. LOL I was shocked at the fact this guy charged me and didnt cut my hair as I asked. Its a barber .. they should have adequate equipment .. I would never recommend this place .. what a disaster read more

Got a great cut from the youngest barber there, Zoylo. He got my hair exactly as I pictured and asked for, in good time too. This barbershop is excellent for what you are paying, and the barbers are game to try more complicated requests, as well as your quick and easy trims/buzz. I've been there several times, Marco is also solid. read more

I never review on here and signed up for yelp because I had to say something about this place after continuously trying it after reading the positive reviews on here. I have gone a few times, with different barbers. Twice I have had it with the owner Pierre. The cut he gave me the first time was off and he missed a few spots that I had to come back in to have him correct. The second time was just horrible. The communication was horrible and within seconds he was shaving it off with clippers. It was done fast and sloppy and looks absolutely horrible. He has no more passion or desire to be there anymore. Doesn't listen and will do a bad job. Go to Jerry's down the street if you are worried about cost. read more

This was the worst haircut I've ever had. Completely different from what I asked for, far too short and uneven all the way around. I'm gutted I let this guy chop all my hair off, at least it will eventually grow back. read more

I recently switched to these guys when, after 3 years of faithful patronage, I was thrice disappointed by the last place. I was not disappointed this time! Fully recommend these guys for men's cuts within a 10 mile radius. No pretension, no frills, no overcharging, no elitism, and no girls helplessly flirting for tips. If you need a quick cut from a friendly barber who's totally gimmick free, this is the place to go! read more

I went in for a buzz cut 3 weeks ago, one of the easiest cuts to perform. The gentleman was friendly enough and I remember tipping him. About 15 min.'s later at the Starbucks around the corner, I noticed a section on the top of my head that he had missed. I went back for repairs but the original barber was out to lunch so the other fellow was kind enough to correct it for me. No problem right? Mistakes happen. Anyway, I went back today and had my hair buzzed by the fellow who had corrected it last time as the other guy was busy. It didn't take long to realize that they both had attitudes with the guy having the audacity to bring up the fact that I had returned the last time, as if it was inappropriate and I should have just walked around with a messed up haircut! This after I gave them a second chance? To top it off he also messed up my hair around the ears this time! A pair of buffoons at best. Needless to say, I won't be returning. read more

5 or 6 years back it was owned by a french guy, Pierre. Casual and old school and clean. He sold it and the new guys I have tried can cut decently but what a unhygienic place it has become! I sat there for 5 minutes and had to leave as these new barbers wouldn't stop to sweep the floor of hair. 3 barbers and the floor with literally piles of hair that they were standing in and customers have to walk in? Too much choice in town, a haircut for me is a nice experience, too bad they cant see their business through a customers eyes and where did they train to miss something so obvious? read more

I normally go to main barbers but it was a sunday and they were closed, so I went down to uptown, they were really fast, but besides from that there wasn't anything memorable about the place, it was quite possibly the worst haircut I've ever had. I do not recommend them. read more

Just had first cut here, definitely be back. Professional, clean, classy barbershop. Everything I want with no pretension. $16, as much or little conversation as you like. read more

Without a doubt the absolute WORST haircut/fade I've ever gotten (and I get done every 2 weeks). I only came here because my reg barber is on vacation. This place looked kinda cool, and reviews were good, so I thought sure, why not? I got cut by an older man with long, wavy, white hair. While he was doing his thing, I stopped him to make sure he was giving me a fade/blend, because after all these years, I know what it feels like, to which he said was fading. When he finished, he turned the chair so I can see, I was floored. I had to ask him "are you done?" because it was that bad. He didn't trim the top and thin it out like I asked, and he didn't do any sort of fade. All I kept saying out loud was "wow...just, wow!". He seemed angry, but I didn't care and didn't want him touching it anymore. I left him no tip and drove straight to another barbershop who did their best to fix it, but all they could say was "the rest will grow out". Even Zoylo, the other barber, had a look on his face when I said bye....I guess he even was disgusted by my cut! Maybe try other employees here, but steer clear of the guy who did my cut!! read more

The crappiest haircut I've ever gotten in my life!! Was surprised how bad it could be, won't use them again.
