I had my second haircut at this place on 26 Jan with barber Ali. That guy just does not enjoy doing his art (hairstyling/haircut). He spent less than 15 minutes completing the haircut and he checked his phone at least 4 times in between and replied to texts as well. This guy doesn't even know how to run scissors - it was hurting and was visible but he did not think of spraying water so he could cut without causing any pain. While shampooing, he ran water all over my face and didn't even bother to apologize as if he did it intentionally. Anyone who is going to try this for the first time, DO NOT CHOOSE "ALI" as your hairdresser - he just doesn't know anything. I hope the management should consider having a chat with this guy. P.S. Terrible haircut and even worse customer service. I was give 5 minutes, ultimately ending in a bowl cut; which isn't cute on a 50 year old man. I asked for it to be fixed and was told it was fine. Attempts to get an appointment later that day, or the next, to have it fixed up were unsuccessful due to them being overbooked already (perhaps why I was given 5 minutes only to begin with?). Ultimately promised a refund which didn't come. After several followups I am now told there won't be a refund, I'm harassing and a new outrageous story is being told by the owner. Weird situation. Living in the area, I've walked past this place so many times. Finally gave in and booked for a haircut and a beard trim and I can honestly say, sans exaggeration, that this was the best haircut I've ever had. My barber, Ali, showed the most incredible attention for detail and his passion for what he was doing really shined through. He blessed me with a skin fade and a beard face along with a relaxing shampoo and conditioner after all was said and done, followed by a sleek styling cream and spray to lock it all in. Barber spent very little time on haircut, maybe 10 minutes. No attention to detail, very bad haircut. For a premium price i dont want to feel like i have to teach someone how to give a haircut. The haircuts are good and the barbers are really experienced but it's not worth the price. $35 for a haircut with complimentary coffee or soft drinks! I'd much rather prefer no soft drinks or coffee with a more reasonable price for a haircut. Who has drinks while they're getting a haircut anyway lol? read more

After today's pampering, I'm a fan of Man Up Grooming! A big fan! Who would have thought a pedi/foot massage was so awesome? As of now, post-treatment, I AM! (And I'll be back to do it again!) The Man Up Grooming salon/spa is freaking cool! It's a man cave in all regards. Big screen TV, bar stocked with refreshments and massage chairs to sit in while you get your feet rubbed... sounds like Heaven doesn't it? This place wants to deliver a hair grooming experience and, perhaps they are good at that? I just needed a hair cut. I have been changing businesses for years, always on the hunt for a "real barber" who knows how to cut a man's hair and who charges appropriately for a 15 minute job. I am unable to understand why this seemingly simple set of demands is so elusive in this industry??? I am old enough to remember when a good haircut use to take 30 minutes to complete, electric devices were not used, you got your neck shaved, and it all cost very little... comparatively. Man Up does not do a 'hair cut', they deliver a hair cutting experience and charge a fee which is proportionally higher than what you would expect. And they do not explain this to you before its too late. I did not ask for, nor did I want, a shampoo, a head massage, or any 'products' in my hair. I asked for a hair cut and I expected a good job. My wife said that they did not do a good job. When I was told that the fee was $37.50 I almost passed out. I have never paid more than $25 for a hair cut. So, I was disappointed, yes. I have been going to Man Up for over a year now. Was really impressed with the place until today. My regular barber had recently quit so I tried another one. Was supposed to get my regular treatment, the Full Monty but all I got was a haircut and a rinse even though I asked for the full Monty. The haircut was pretty good. Oh well. I'm willing to give them another go. I'll ask for a different barber next time. Update -Went back a few weeks ago ( feb 2015), got a different barber and was thoroughly impressed. I've become a regular here since Male Essentials closed down a while ago. They offer a classic cut with the option of getting the razor neck shave and the haircut always includes a great wash. Laura is the stylist that I always see and she does a great job. Got a fade last week and everybody told me it looked great! My favourite thing about Man Up is their monthly plans. I get two cuts and unlimited touch ups. Definitely check this place out. read more

NB: This review is for the hair service only, I can't comment on the shaves or mani/pedi. I decided to give this place a try after reading all the great reviews here on yelp and it fit my last minute schedule. I was literally driving down the road to see what stylists were open and this one was at the top of the list (thanks iphone and yelp app) :-) When I booked my appointment I was told they only had room for quick cut, which was fine since I wanted to get in and out and I was post-gym so already had a shower (no point of getting the full monty). So i figure, in and out in 20-30 mins. When I arrived I was greeted at the counter by someone there, then they directed me to my stylist. The person sat me down in a chair and was ready to start cutting, and asked "how do you want your sides". Umm, how about a hello to start, or even a name!? I had no idea with whom I was speaking with, and neither did this person ask me how I want my hair done or what i'm looking for, very unprofessional. I even mentioned to them that I'd love to find a new stylist since I always have to pre book mine in advance and they dont work on weekends. I figure this would be a great reason for someone to "wow" a new customer looking to spend $40-50 every 5-6 weeks at at salon, many even a tip. Anyway, after I told them what I wanted, it was still subpar. They used clippers more often than scissors (so much for a styling!), I had to remind the person about the sides and how uneven they were, on top of it all, I was told to pay full price (full monty), even though i never had a head massage, or a shampoo in/out (only a rinse). $40 for a quickie, yeah, a quickie rip-off!!! I went to Man Up because I wanted to try something different and more modern. They were excellent - my hair stylist was really friendly, it was very relaxed and I felt totally at ease. I got a great cut and joined their members program before I left. I'm an actor and the bonus of being able to go in for free edging between cuts makes a big difference, that added 'sexy up' as they call it. Highly recommend! read more

Made a same day appointment for my partner here and he got a really terrible haircut. He likes it a little longer on the top and then faded and she literally made his hair two different lengths. The top is left way too long and lopsided. Seriously, one side of his head has more than an inch more length than the other one. And the other length is buzzed at a two. So he has this Lon going, uneven hair that lies over the buzzed part. I don't understand how she can be asked to fade it, then cut it unevenly and in two halves. ??????? read more

I had a very good pedicure today at Man Up Grooming in N.Van. Bitha has been doing pedicures for over 20 years and it was very relaxing and my feet felt great. She smoothed over my heals and toes, massaged my calves and feet. I would definitely go back. The new rules require you to have a mask on. read more

I was in about six weeks ago and actually had a really nice short little experience at this place. I am a female (this becomes important later) customer who has a small undercut on the right side. I asked if someone could just do a quick shave and they were great. The guy at the front counter said to me no charge because it was only a few minutes and so I tipped the barber and vowed I would return. Today was a much different experience due to an interaction with a person I believe is the owner. I walked in and asked for the same service as last time and told them of my previous experience. I came back 30 min later for my three min cut which was great and I tipped my barber generously for her time. I was then "greeted" on my way out the door and told that while they can't publicly advertise it, Man up does not cut women's hair . I did not want or would ever expect to receive a salon cut. I wanted a small space on my head shaved with the number 2 electric razor. That is all. This means that she was saying that no matter what females are not welcome in this establishment. I was also told that this 3 min experience was supposed to be $35 dollars. So now do I not only feel discriminated against, you have made me feel like I'm not paying for service. This women saw me walk in and chose to not say anything until after I had paid and was ready to leave. Finally I've found my place to get my hair cut and styled in my North Vancouver neighborhood. Why Man Up Grooming deserves 5 stars is because it was a relaxing place to have a grooming experience was the best since I moved out to Vancouver in over 6 years ago. I came into the Man Up Salon/Spa store with my last hair cut done over 2+ months ago. I was warmly greeted by those in the store and was put to ease and not like I was some stranger. I knew the Salon's website so I knew that I was looking for something nicer than just a cut and a style. Fortunately they have a hair style package called "The Full Monty" which included a shampoo, cut, style, edging, post-cut cleansing shampoo and a head/scalp massage. The post-cut shampoo was that service added part of the package I truly appreciated the best because I do not know how many times I walked out of a hair stylist's place with an itchy head and neck from the little hairs not cleaned out!!! My stylist (and I'm so sorry that I forgot her name) was super friendly and very cool. She took the time to listen to my past haircut adventures and from that she worked her magic to make me look great. She was real friendly to talk with which is another huge plus over the other places where you just sit there and feel like a stranger. I'm now officially done with the so-called discount hair cut places in the malls. Not that I'll look forward to seeing my hair grow out again, but when it does, I'll be going back to Man Up Grooming to make me look pretty again! read more

After a long, fruitless search for a good haircut, I took a chance and called Man Up Grooming, hoping they could put an end to the madness. It was so refreshing, upon arrival, to be offered tea or coffee. The place is comfortable, and is dark and relaxing. It doesn't feel like you're on a game-show set like so many other salons. Moreover, there is great consistency from stylist to stylist, which is almost unheard of. Finally, this place goes the extra mile, offering beard trims, nail care, the works. The only reason this place is called "Man Up" is because you'll be so disappointed in the cut, you'll have to "man up" for a month until you can get a real haircut somewhere else. Even after showing exactly what I wanted, the guy "got distracted" and cut it however he wanted. I would have stopped it sooner, but I'm fairly blind without my glasses. Disappointed today. In Vancouver on business. on a whim decided to call to see if there was an opening. I was told yes at 3:30. Great news. I got there 10 minutes late. My fault. However I was then told another person was coming In at 4 and I could wait an hour till they were done. seems like I was getting squeezed in for a half hour. But now I would have to wait an hour for the next guy? Not even a 10 minute grace period. I know I was late, but sometimes hair cuts take a little longer. Don't do it. I tried this place based on its appearance and marking I suppose. Turns out it was a bad call. I had a haircut. They booked me in within an hour. Red flag I suppose. I gave instruction of how I would like my haircut. (I slick my hair back) the haircut is totally wrong. I would say it looks like a lopsided microphone. literally. No where near enough hair left to slick and, it is just a bad haircut all around.(I wasn't joking about the lopsided bit) The hair aside though my barber had zero conversational skills (poor english as well but at least he could try) and, seemed in a rush. coffee was cold place was messy......... not cool. In retrospect I'm not sure how I felt awkward enough to pay. Maybe another barber or stylist could be better. But, I am not going to risk it. I hope they try out there stylists a little more before hiring next time. I hope this is helpful and saves someone from looking like I do now. read more

Like OMG I like totally went to this place and like was early cause I like want to be respectful but OMG when no one told me there was like a delay in my appointment and then like 3 other dudes just walked in a sat down with huge grins on their faces cause of the stiletto lululemin 20 somethins and so like I just left after 10 minutes of nothing. I came here for the first time this week with high hopes that i could actually get a decent haircut in a comfortable and modern gents hairdressers. Place looks good and it's a great concept. Problem is... If your main reason for going is to get a good professional haircut you will be disappointed. I don't mind paying a bit extra for the decor etc... but the stylist needs to be up to par. Mine was constantly asking me what i thought needed to be done? The end result, not surprisingly was average. She seemed more concerned about selling me the salon hair products, which they obviously make a commission on, rather than asking me if i was happy with her work. I just went in to ask about getting my under cut shaved, I've been going to Barber shops for the past six months to have this done...with no issue. The person behind the desk literally laughed at me and told me "this is for men only." When I asked if he was serious he just repeated the same thing. I get my undercut shaved once every two weeks at New York Barber across the street, and yes I'm a woman. They love me in there and they are nothing but kind and courteous and polite. They think it's cool that a woman is brave enough to come into a male dominated shop, and I got a high five he first time I went in. They were busy today so I thought I'd try and support another local NV business...apparently my genitalia excludes me from an under shave. A shave is a shave: wether it's the underside of a woman's head or a man's face. This is 2018 I'm sorry but you guys need to get with the times. I would never go back or recommend this place after the horrible way I was just treated. Go to New York Barber, they don't care if you're a man or a woman, they just give a good shave read more

Had nothing but good experiences here. Average priced haircuts, and is a great deal (1 touch up/one hair cut for $33 a month) if you get the contract. I wanted to try a new hairstyle, and I was not disappointed after leaving it up to the stylist to cut it in a way that looks good. I bought some of their "MyPackage" underwear on display at the front of the store and loved it for the first few weeks I had it. It developed a lot of wearing and a couple holes between the legs so I took it back and the owner said she stands by her products she sells and offered me a new pair (even nicer), in exchange which I have not had any problems with yet. $45 for a barber to do a hot towel shave that really was just the lady using an ELECTRIC Razor on my face. If I wanted to use an electric razor I would have shaved by face at home. No indication the razor was or is ever properly cleaned or maintained. This is an overpriced and disappointing business. Inexperienced or staff simply not capable of doing a proper shave shouldn't bother offering the service. Do not bother with a hot towel shave here, go downtown and get a proper hot towel shave at one of many barbers who offer it not some lady using an electric shaver on your face. Also felt very rushed which I don't think you should from a $35 hair cut. I have gone to other barbers on the North shore and had much better quality cuts for a fraction of the cost. Walked in here on a Saturday asked for a hair cut at the front desk who happens to be the owner. She asked me if it was my first time at man up and I said yes. So I sit down I get a hair cut I get up after the hair cut which I was not very happy with as the person didn't have experience in men's hair cuts the way I wanted it done. Which was a simple low fade and line up of the sides and the front hair line. I didn't want to top touched at all. So after the hair cut I go to pay and the owner tells me it's $56.00 !! I was so angry I said why is it 56.00? I just got a simple hair cut and... I didn't even have to top of my hair cut. She said that I asked for a very skilled and special hair cut which is a "fade" and we had to use a "razor" to line you up that's extra. First of all they don't know how to fade at all. Or line ups. Second I only cut the sides usually at any barber it's cheaper to cut only sides and not your full head. So I gave her 56 dollars and told her that I will never be coming here again. She said no problem. This place sucks you will have to man up when you live on the fact that this is a horrible place for a hair cut!totally my friend referred me and said they wash your hair and massage your head and give you a beer!? I did t get nothing!! What a waste of time at-least if I got a beer and a nice scalp massage I wouldn't be that pissed to pay almost 60 dollars!
