Apologies up front for the long review, but when it comes to this Doc, can't say enough of the good. Dr. Scott Upton was recommended to me about 9 years ago from a trusted family friend, and needlessly to say, over the 9 years, I've made sure whatever health insurance I picked let me keep him as the Primary Care Physician for my family and me. Dr. Upton is hands down the best Primary / family doctor I've had in all my years of experience. He is extremely patient, even with a thousand questions (including ignorant questions born from things read online or heard from second hand info). He is extremely knowledgeable, generous and humble in his knowledge-if he is not familiar with something he does not make up answers, but will research and get back to you to share his findings. The Doc is multi-dimensional in his thinking and willing to consider all possibilities, with the focus of providing his patients the best care. Dr. Upton has helped identify serious medical issues that could have been life threatening, and provided calm and a sense of peace when I had a couple potential diagnosis scares that turned out to be nothing. As far as the rest of the staff at the office, they have always been courteous, though there is bound to be some administrative miscommunications from time to time (that happens in any profession be it a drive thru, restaurant, grocery store, etc). I know some people may rate a doctor based on their overall experiences with the office staff and not just the doctor. For me, my focus of this review is on Dr. Upton, because at the end of the day, who I trust with medical care is the priority - and when it comes to that, Dr. Upton sets the standard. read more

The office has had some issues with their other departments like answering phones or getting referrals. However, after I informed them of the issues they were all over it. I normally see Amanda Amini and she's always been great, super responsive and extremely thorough. When Dr. Upton needed to get involved directly he was also very thorough and easy to deal with. It's a shame, because I really would have liked to see this amazing Dr. Upton since he is so close to where I live. But the problem was his receptionist was being so rude and condescending on the phone when I was trying to schedule an appointment. So maybe this review isn't based on the doctor, but having a polite, attentive staff is just as crucial as having the doctor who treats the patients. Actually, politeness isn't even necessary, but professionalism certainly is. In no way did I try to be pushy about setting up an appointment, but the response I received was uncalled for. Me: Hi, I'd like to schedule an appointment with Dr. Upton for a check-up this weekend if possible. Receptionist: You mean THIS WEEK?? Me: No, I meant this weekend. Receptionist: UMM, we AREN'T OPEN on the weekends. Me: Okay, what are your office hours? Receptionist: Dr. Upton is available M-F from 8-4. Me: Okay, would it be possible for me to see him this Friday at noon? Receptionist: During LUNCHTIME?!?!? Emm, I don't even know if he'll be here. He's booked all the way until October, so it's not even possible to see him until October. Things would have been easier if she had told me from the start, rather than having me ask. If I had to deal with a receptionist like that every time I needed to see the doctor, I'd have my head through a wall. read more

I have been going to San Diego Internal Medicine and Associates for 20 years. When my Primary Care Doctor left Dr. Upton became my new Primary Care and it has been the best experience ever. He takes the time to listen to your concerns. He researches your issues. He always calls me back and makes sure I am taken care of. When it was determined I needed a hip replacement Dr. Upton called me at 7 at night on a New Years Eve just to make sure I had my results and didn't have to wait through the holidays. I referred my brother to Dr Upton for my newborn nephew and since they left San Diego they haven't found a Doctor that met their needs the way Dr. Upton did. I read a review here that was less than favorable and I was pretty shocked because in 20 years I have never had poor service from this office. If you are considering this office please read the good reviews because I have never had a bad experience. I trust Dr. Upton and Internal Medicine with MY LIFE! I chose Dr. Upton at a time when I was switching insurance carriers, and really wanted to choose a Primary Care doctor wisely. I needed to choose someone within SHARP Community Medical Group, and so did a lot of research before deciding on Dr. Upton. I thought it would/could be great to have the same doctor as my children, since he is a Family Physician. I visited Dr. Upton for a "get to know you" visit and physical exam in March (?). All went fine. I had lab tests done during my 1st visit to Dr. Upton; he informed me that the results will be mailed to my house. After not receiving them for ~ 1 month, I phoned the lab and then had the results mailed, receiving them about 2 months after the procedure. I have since tried to get in touch with the office on 3 separate occasions. I waited on hold to leave a message for Dr. Upton's nurse for quite some time, and was hung up on twice when the phone was finally answered. I was successful in leaving several messages for his nurse to call me back. She/He never did. On one occasion I needed to find out about travel vaccines for pending travel arrangements - because I was not called back, I cancelled the trip. On a second occasion, I was calling to inquire about the need for an antibiotic prior to dental cleaning, as I have Mitral Valve Prolapse. My dentist will not clean my teeth until he has heard word from my PC Dr. about whether I need the antibiotic or not. Again, when a message was left for Dr. Upton's nurse, I received no call back. Just today I've left a phone message with the Medical Records group to see if they'll inform me whether they have received records from a prior out-of-state doctor so that I can finally get my dental cleaning scheduled. I hope I'll have better luck this time. I also need to schedule a lab appointment and anticipate problems doing so. I hate that the doctor has no way of communicating via Internet (no website, no email, no web medical records). In this day and age, that just seems antiquated. If I really had children, how impossible would it be to be heard when my kids were sick? If it's been this difficult for me, how difficult would it be when I really had a need? I am not impressed. Unless things change, I will be switching doctors. Such a shame SHARP...such a shame. :0( read more

Dr. Upton has been my primary care physician for over 5 years now. He is undoubtedly the best doctor in town. He is compassionate, knowledgeable and runs a great practice. Twice, we have had appointments cancelled on us the night before after hours. All due to a problem they found with insurance. Our insurance has been in place each time, and the ineptitude of this office to properly care for patients that are just trying to get their daughter seen is obvious now. We would not recommend this place for anybody. They simply don't care about patients, even if they offer to pay cash. They simply don't care about the patients here. DO NOT BRING YOUR CHILDREN HERE. Before making an appointment I checked the reviews on yelp. Right now, after coming out of my first appointment with Dr. Upton, I'm seriously surprised about the bad reviews. Everything was a breeze; the staff was friendly and efficient, I did not wait long at all, and Dr. Upton easily spent 50 minutes with me. I have to agree with one of the previous posters about the receptionist. She is very rude and has no sense of customer service. I've heard such wonderful things about Dr. Upton that I was willing to put up with being talked to like a child. Seriously, invest in a receptionist that actually has customer service skills. I'm sure plenty of customers are deterred by her unfriendly demeanor. I made an appointment for my 3 children in June. That's the earliest appointment Dr. Upton had available. I absolutely love Dr. Upton!! I've been seeing him as my primary doctor for 10 years now. He is simply the best doctor ever! Super gentle, intelligent, resourceful, with great bedside manner. He is also my sons pediatrician. My entire family goes here and I've referred tons of friends because I am so happy with everything at this office. All the staff is wonderful and efficient. My cardiologist referred me to Dr. Upton. Upon calling their office on two occasions to try to set up an appointment; I was dealt with rudely!! They actually hung up on me!! TWICE!! They told me that the Dr. was not taking new patients. His website says he is taking new patients They refused to answer my questions as to wether they had even received my referral or not. He is AMAZING. He is one of the only remaining doctors that would perform my son's circumcision in the hospital. Most SD doctors, make you go home after giving birth and COME back to their office with your son to perform the procedure three days later. He is very smart, thoughful and never makes you feel rush. I have called and left a message for him when my son is sick or I have a question and he generally returns my call within the hour. He is fantastic! read more

Dr. Upton has been my doctor for at least 12 years. I have found him to be encouraging and honest in his assessment and is knowledgeable in both sports and internal medicine. He anticipates potential problems and is not selfish enough to be the know it all and will refer you to another if you ha e additional questions. I love this doctor. Coming from Florida where I had the same Doctor for 28+ years .. I was concerned when looking for a new Doctor! I contacted United Health and they gave me the names of three Doctors near my home! I prayed over the names and was lead to Dr Scott Upton. What a blessing he is. Not only is he professional.. he's caring.. he's easy to talk to and more importantly.. he LISTENS!!! I'm very blessed to have Dr Upton as a doctor to both of my daughter pediatric needs .He is a great doctor. He always answer all your questions gives you the advice that you need in an encouraging words even when the news isn't what you want to hear. Dr Upton also returns phone calls for simple questions so you don't have to make an unnecessary appointment. The only bad thing about him is he so popular and it can be hard to get an appointment with him when you want if its a urgent matter.I read a lot reviews saying he's office staff isn't great I personally have never had a problem with them and I have been seeing Dr Upton for five years now . Doctor Upton and Jennifer Groh are hands down the best. I can't think of a better place to take my twins. They are available and call me back instantly whenever I have an issue. Dr. Upton was referred to me by a teacher friend of mine. He is the pediatrician she chose for her children. My situation is different than most. I needed a pediatrician, one whom I could trust and confide. My husband and I had to fly out of state to pick up my son at birth (he is adopted). His birth did not go as smoothly as we had hoped and Dr. Upton, not even being our official doctor yet, spoke to us on the phone and helped us through that difficult and scary time. He was there each time we called and if he was not available to speak with us right away, he called us back within 20 minutes. We were so pleased with his guidance and help (3000 miles away). As soon as we made it back to CA, Dr. Upton saw us right away. He has been there for our son and our family now for 2 years. Dr Upton is not only my doctor, is my husband's doctor and my daughter's doctor. My daugther has special needs and Dr. Upton not only does his reseach on the latest and medical information for her he also keeps in touch with all her specialist so he knows what is going on with her at all times. There have been many times where I have had to call doctor Upton at after hours he not only calls me back right away he does it with a kind voice and gives me all the information that I need. If my daugther needs to go to the ER for any reason even if it as 1am he will call the ER ahead of time and let her know she is coming so we don't have to wait. I love his staff and everyone in his office!! They know us all by first name and I wouldn't switch even if my insurance didn't cover his office. I have referred other parents with children with special needs and co-workers, friends and any new parents that need a doctor. It is nice to have the entire family all have the same Dr. Also, with him being young we know he will be around with our family for a long time!!! read more

Dr Upton is the first doctor for our son in 3.5 years with whom our son is super comfortable. Usually he freaks out a bit when it comes to doctors like usual toddler do but with Dr Upton he was very happy. So much so that he said himself that the doctor is very nice and if he gets a boo boo next time I should take him there. He is also my husband's doctor, we went on our first visit in April and everything went well. He ordered some labs for my husband and everything came out fine. We did receive the labs reports at our home address within few weeks. Overall we have been super happy with Dr Upton. read more
