Had a great experience at Upstairs Circus. There are so many options of projects such as leather working, wood working, jewelry making, etc. You can enjoy cocktails and beverages while you work. They provide all of the supplies and tools. They play fun music in the background. Great time overall!

I love this idea of an art workshop that helps me unleash my creative side without too much pressure of buying materials or looking up a 1000 YouTube videos to know how to go about building something cool. Upstairs Circus is a great space to create an art piece of your choice from a myriad of options including wood frames, bottle opens, jewelry and so much more. Every piece comes with a manual and there are a few instructors around to help in case you have questions. You grab the required tools and get to work on your masterpiece. The Austin skyline wooden frame I chose to build had clear instructions, I was able to complete it within my 2-hr time slot and am so proud of the finished product! The cocktails served at the bar are an added bonus! Parking can be tough since they are right in the middle of downtown so you would be lucky to find street parking or go to a nearby paid garage.

Mark, Damian, Justice, Omar...and the queen, Normandy, make this place so much fun! Totally worth it to set some time to do a crafting project! We stopped in here looking for a fun thing to do. Sometimes you have to call ahead but we got lucky on a Friday afternoon and were able to walk in and get a spot at the tables to do a craft. The crafts vary in time it'll take to work on them, which is also dependent on how well you can craft (or indecisive you are to get started...like us unfortunately). At the time when we went, there were 32 different crafts to choose from. Damian and Omar helped us narrow down our selection and choose the Distressed Wood Art project. You get the whole kit with everything you need, a brief explanation from the wonderful folks working here, and access to different paints and other enhancers for your project. Ours took a little over 2 hours, mainly because of our indecisiveness as well as having some beverages and conversations. I had a few old fashioneds and my wife had a couple of the vodka specialty drinks. They're all priced really well, and it's nice to just sit there and take your time while listening to the cool playlist of music in the background that they have. As our project came to an end, we cleaned up our station and Omar helped pack up our project so that we could easily put it in a suitcase. What's nice about some of these projects, is that they're easy to pack because they know that many people come here who are traveling. As we were checking out, we met the one and only Normandy! She was absolutely wonderful and invited us back to come have some drinks later in the evening, so we absolutely did! In the evening it was a bit busier, but we still had a great time with Normandy, Justice and Mark while others were doing their crafting projects. Again, we got invited to come back on Saturday for the brunch! We opted not to do another craft but to just have some mimosas before our flight. ALL the seats and tables were full of people doing crafts, it was super busy and Normandy was slinging bottles of champagne like it was nobody's business! This was by far the most welcoming, fun, and memorable part of our Austin trip. To think we could have passed up on this because "the project may have taken too long". Even if it did, who cares!? It was an awesome experience and we can't wait to come back to Upstairs Circus and make something new!

This place is super fun! They have so many great crafts for the price of $43. I created my own fedora hat and it turned out really good! The instructions are on a piece of paper so you do have to guide yourself through the craft but the staff will help if you have any questions.

Crafts & drinks - what a combination! I really enjoyed this creative space. I made a beaded bracelet - a style that I've wanted to try making but just never set aside the time to do it. Simply make a reservation and show up to pick out a project among maybe 20+ options. All the supplies are provided to you, portioned to the amount you need, and the tools are in a toolkit at your workspace. The projects cover a wide variety of skills, with some basic knowledge of how to do stuff - thread a needle & bead, for example, and interest from beading to nailing to painting a pair of Nikes. Then the bar is right there, to stay hydrated during the hard work of crafting. Reservations are in 3-hour blocks - aim to get there at the beginning of your time b/c you will need most of it to finish your project. I went solo, there were others there maybe on a date & girlfriends evening out. So whoever you're with and whatever reason, try it out. #Austin #crafts #jewelrymaking

Such a fun idea especially for Galentine's day! It's a pretty hands-off DIY spot but surprisingly instructions are easy enough to follow to end up with cool new artwork. They had a special for 1/2 off bottles on Galentine's which we jumped on of course. It was a great mix of activity, talking and drinking for a girls night! The main downside is that it's pretty pricey to continue coming back to especially for the lack of hands-on instruction. It's more for the experience vs what your projects worth. They also don't validate parking after 6pm, and street parking is a struggle. And bring your own food if you're hungry - they don't offer food but allow outside food which is nice! Overall, I had a great time but it's unlikely that I'd come back frequently due to value, hence the 4 stars

Came in for a team event with some coworkers and we had such a lovely time! Tip: Make a reservation during HH to get the $5 bubbles :) I'm not creative or great at drawing at all and I honestly was impressed with how my hat turned out. The staff is very good at explaining the process and the project you select have very detailed instructions. If you can read instructions you will succeed in having a fine masterpiece! Great for a group event or date night. I'll be back for date night!

I can't wait to go back. My friend and I were looking for something fun to do while in town for a girls weekend. We thought the Mimosas Sunday event was an all day thing but when we showed up we realized it was a set time and missed about half the event. We were going to leave but the staff helped us out with picking a project that would fit in the time that was left. My friend and I made these cute little beaded bracelets and had a great time.

Fun place for a gals night out or a date! They had delicious mocktails and the staff was so helpful and kind. I think the only thing I'd change was not to have the music on so loud but that's cause I'm old and wanna hear my companions! LOL Otherwise, so much fun. They have menus and examples of what you can make and a good idea of how long each project will take you. I left home with a catch all tray that I made to look like a ouija board and my friends left home recycled glasses. Fun times!

I took my daughter here for her birthday and we had so much fun! Here are my helpful hints. Make a reservation! We did and we were glad, they were fully booked. Next, it started at 3:00. We arrived at 2:57 and there were already people in there. By 3:05 it was packed and there was a big line to get your supplies. So....get there early! Plan on staying the whole time, my craft needed paint drying time so I used up every minute. Everyone there is super friendly, but nobody ever came to see if we needed help. We must have looked very craft efficient . I wonder if the craft choices change often. They were a bit pricy so I'd go again if there were other choices. Overall, I'd recommend it.

I had a great time here with some friends yesterday. DIY crafts and bottomless mimosa's! Sign me up! Upstairs Circus is really fun, but the quality of the projects stands out to me. They provide really high quality materials and tools. I made a wallet several years ago and it's still in perfect condition. Yesterday I made the cutest serving tray. The process to put these projects together is detailed. It's broken down step by step and the staff is very helpful when you get stuck or need assistance. The music was great, we had plenty of space for our group. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. There was a bridal party group we met on our way out. They were so cute! Everyone in our group saw 2 or 3 more projects we want to do so we will be back.

Okay this was one of the most fun, and creative places I have been in a long time. Where do I even begin here! My friends and I came to celebrate a birthday on a Saturday. Right when you walk in, I feel like the entire place is a vibe! Almost every table was filled, luckily we had made a reservation and I recommend you doing the same. Different days have different drink specials or happy hour, we decided to come on a Saturday which was FREE BOTTOMLESS MIMOSAS included with your crafting time! We honestly thought there was going to be a catch with this, but we received 2 hours to bottomless mimosa time. What was even more amazing about this, was we never had to get up for refills. The staff would constantly come by our table and fill us up as we got low on the drinks. Another great thing to know is upstairs circus is bring your own food! We ordered taco deli from around the corner and picked them up before our reservation time, so we'd have food throughout the morning while crafting and drinking. But other groups had pizza, donuts, you name it you are more than welcome to bring food! My favorite part about the morning was that everyone in the group could choose which craft they wanted to make, however we all seemed to finish around the same time! You are also able to personalize your craft, so if I had to imagine you could have 100s of variations to the options you had for the crafts you decided. They even have a deal with in the same day, once you do one craft if you decide to do a second that one will be half off. So something to consider if you are torn between 2 projects. Last part, was the music was 10/10! It was a mixture of throw backs, and just all the top hits from probably the last 20 years. My group and I honestly had the BEST time and could not stop talking about how this was like going to a boozy brunch, but 50 times better. If you are considering coming here, make the reservation and go. Because I already cannot wait to come back!

    Processing my wallet.

We were so hungover from the night out before that we didn't imbibe here at the circus but all three of us had an extraordinary time making our chosen crafts. I went with the wallet since I've always been fascinated with leather work. It was so satisfying to accomplish this craft. 10/10 would recommend.

The venue itself has a lively, open feel with an urban backyard vibe and plenty of space to move around, mingle, and actually take in the installation without feeling crowded. What stood out most was how well the space complemented the event. The layout made it easy to engage with the installation while still enjoying the social vibe. They had space for working virtually as well as displays to test some of the technology. There's a nice balance between indoor comfort and that signature rooftop-style setting, which gives it a relaxed but elevated feel. The staff was friendly and kept things running smoothly, and the overall setup felt thoughtfully organized. Whether you were there to focus on the installation or just take it in casually, the environment supported both. The line was somewhat long to get into the event as it was at capacity and could only allow more people as people were leaving the event. I was given a drink ticket and got to try the Patio Pounder with ilegal mezcal, primo aperitivo, tropical citrus, coconut, grapefruit soda. The bartender was efficient even though the lines were long. The cocktail was enjoyable with the balance of smoky and citrus flavors. They also had a variety of food bites available including chips and queso. creamy street corn, and sliders. The food was gone relatively quickly due to the crowds but it would be replenished periodically. Overall, Upstairs at Caroline proved to be a solid venue for a creative SXSW event versatile, welcoming, and very on-brand for Austin's arts and tech scene.

The staff was very friendly at the entrance, the bar, and when seating. The place is pretty big and has upstairs and downstairs seating as well as a bar on several levels. Two points that did bring the visit a little down. The seating, you are packed in like sardines. No room to stretch even a little, you bump against the stranger next to you or them into you. It is almost worse then an airplane. Two no handrails on several stairs which are also uneven. I have some ongoing spine and foot pain and it caused me issues but I saw several other people struggling and one almost falling themselves. Had it been just me or maybe one other person that would be bad enough but as several people struggled that is a huge safety issue and should be fixed. The ushers helped when they could but sometimes they were helping others and didn't see it happen. Still it was a fun time, if a bit cramped. The staff is great and I love the history but that also means it is very outdated and not very comfy to sit for an hour or more, especially with no intermission.

PART TWO: OK, I'm…read moredone with my "rant" (sorry, I was "born this way"; oops, wrong artist), time to focus on the actual show. Steve Vai was simply AMAZING! I don't think he's capable of putting on a bad show. I bought my ticket well in advance, & still wish I'd done it sooner. I was in the Orchestra, about 15 rows back. Show was at the PARAMOUNT THEATER. What a JUXTAPOSITION! Opened in 1915, The Paramount harkens back to an even earlier period, somewhere in the 19th Century. Contrast that with some of the most technically advanced music of OUR age, & it blows the mind! Man, if the original architects could see it now, completely restored, still every bit the JEWEL of Downtown Austin as it was, "back in the day". Pick out something YOU like, and GO! Find yourself a REASON to get inside the building! I've seen everyone from the late Carlos Montoya to Pat Metheny, & many others. Folks were SHORTER 100 years ago; I'm "average" height (6'1"), & the Balcony seats are cramped, but ONLY from there can ya truly appreciate the ornate GRANDEUR of the scroll work surrounding the Stage, from top to bottom. A modern movie theater is made from tilted concrete walls, & has no soul. The Paramount Theater's truly a SHRINE to the Arts. In our clamor for "progress", we've lost something. I'll cover the Paramount more on its own page, but I had ta digress; back to "Little Stevie Vai" (what a NICE little boy!). NO elaborate light show, NO costuming (well, there was the one "alien?" suit he wore). NO GIMMICKS! It's all about the MUSIC. Let's make sure EVERYONE gets their just due. The main members of the Band for "The Story of Light" tour include: BASS: Philip Bynoe GUITAR: Dave Weiner DRUMS: Jeremy Colson And a few supporting members whose names I don't know; sorry. Much (but not all) of Steve's music is complicated, poly-rhythmic, in odd time signatures, & maybe not "accessible" for the "GAP" (definition in Part One). It's difficult to classify what "genre" it is; I guess "fusion" would come the closest, but that label seems to conjure up images of Avant Garde Jazz. Steve Vai is NOT Jazz. You just have to hear for yourself; you'll either hate it, or you will LOVE it. And apparently, younger folks are fans too; there were TONS of twenty-&-thirty-something's there! He might not be the biggest "draw" in the Industry, but the age range is an indication folks will be listening to Steve Vai for a LONG time. Most of the show (as usual) was instrumental. Steve's got quite a bit of solo material, but many (including me) think "Passion and Warfare" is one of his best albums. Accordingly, the songs in this work are ALWAYS a major part of his shows. The climax of the concert (though not the end) is "For the Love of God". Also from "Passion", there's "The Audience Is Listening", a depiction of a "show and tell" from yer Grammar School days, with his ACTUAL childhood teacher, Nancy Fagan, pleading, BEGGING him to turn it down ("boys, it's getting too LOUD."). I mean, he warned her ("Just wanna warn ya; it's gonna be LOUD"). The song is re-enacted live, compete with Nancy's (recorded) voice. That's another thing about Steve: his humor. He's a virtuoso, but he doesn't take himself too seriously, or seriously AT ALL, really. None of the "angst" with which too many Jazz musicians are afflicted. The music will play to your intellect, but you'll also LAUGH YOUR ASS OFF! As always, there's an acoustic set, & Steve is just as mesmerizing doing "Wooden Music" as on Electric. He brought up a coupla audience members, to "write" a song for the band. He'd have them sing or "beat box" lil' parts, and "build" the song by adding each part, one at a time. But we need someone else, to complete the picture; we need (Steve's words here, I'll not argue): "The BEST guitarist in the World!" Well, we ARE in Austin, right? Can ya see where this is going? Who should walk onstage but ERIC JOHNSON! Now, I've seen Steve before, and Eric sat in that time too. So, at a certain point, I knew what was coming, but that didn't make it any less COOL. Of course, they played with Joe Satriani, in G3; I believe they were the FIRST to tour with him under that name (saw that too, at AMH). Of course, there's the obligatory Encore, & afterwards, possibly the nicest, most sincere "Thank You" to the audience I ever heard. Steve loves coming to Austin, as do many other artists, so we sometimes get that EXTRA special show the rest of the Country doesn't (like Eric Johnson stoppin' by). But Steve's got other friends in Austin as well (Terry Bozzio, for one), so I know when he talks about loving Austin, he really MEANS it! All in all, a GREAT SHOW! Again, I encourage you to at least check out "Passion and Warfare", and you'll see why I'm so enthusiastic about Steve Vai. I'd ask ya to go check him out, but by now, he's in S. America, on the next leg of his tour, so ya missed out. larrythediner .
