Literally around the corner from Lil' America food truck pod, and walkable to a bunch of other restaurants.

Which if you don't know, craftsman is just another way to say needs a lot of fucking work. So here my husband and I are, the blind leading the blind, down this humbling road we call home ownership. Until we got married our "tools" consisted mainly of a screwdriver set from IKEA. Although we've come a long way, we have even longer to go. Enter: the tool library. Portland's gift to the newly married, broke, and DIY impaired or dabbler. The tool library, as you might have guessed, is basically a library of tools you can check out for a week at a time for a suggested donation of $1. All of the tools have been donated making it a hodgepodge of all kinds of things. They have a non comprehensive list on their web site to help you get a gist of what they offer. They have all the basics covered. This particular tool library is just for us folks in North Portland, which you need to prove by way of mail and an ID. I gather from combing the internet that our tool library is a little underdeveloped in comparison to others in town. Us north Portlanders are roughing it, but we'll take what we can get with a smile. We couldn't be more thankful this place exists. This place is run by friendly volunteers, bless their hearts. For this reason rules can be a bit fuzzy. For example, being able to renew tools over the phone vs. in person can vary from person to person depending who's manning the desk. I'm not complaining mind you, just a PSA to be patient and gracious with these volunteers. After all, if they weren't there you wouldn't have any darn tools to starts with. A great resource if you've got big dreams of fixing things and you're manned with an IKEA screwdriver.

I've been wanting to do a terrarium class for a long time and recently paid the big bucks to make…read moreit happen! The class starts with an overview of terrariums in history, which is more interesting than you might think. Then you get hands-on with building the terrarium, from pouring in rocks and soil to choosing plants and adding decorative elements. It's a lot of fun and feels like a messy art project like when you were a kid in school. The whole things lasts about two hours. There were about 16 people total in the class. You're invited to bring beverages and snacks to make an occasion out of it. It costs $30-60 to join the class, depending on how big your group is. Then it's another $50-400 for the container, plants, soil, etc. So it can get quite costly depending on the size and shape of terrarium you wish to build. You cannot bring your own container to prevent contamination. One thing to note is they offer lifetime maintenance help if your plants start dying or terrarium ecosystem doesn't seem to be working right. The shop is also open to visit outside a class. You can buy a pre-made terrarium or they can also help make a terrarium in your own container outside of classes because they have time to clean it. It's a very unique shop and I'm glad it exists in Portland!

This Christmas marks my 10th year with my best friend by my side, and I wanted to make my husband…read morefeel as special as he made me feel that first Christmas when he gifted me the most beautiful heart necklace - the first "real" piece of jewelry any guy had ever given. So after some thought, and some great recommendations from friends, I landed on Roosevelts Terrariums in Downtown Portland - the supposedly largest Terrarium shop in the world! Learning the history behind Terrariums, how they've helped decrease the cost of tea among other items, and how they once were a great center piece of 1800's households was the perfect start to an incredibly fun class! Corey picked his favorite Jar, filled the bottom with about an inch of lava rock, several inches of dirt, and meticulously chose and planted every plant, rock, glass, and soapstone sculpture (which Scarlett picked out for her Papa when we visted the Sea Lion caves last month) creating a diverse little ecosystem. He was also able to use the little mushroom figurine he made in a glassblowing coarse last year! Now this way, no matter where our paths might lead us, we will always have a little piece of the PNW in our hearts and home - Merry Christmas baby, I love you so much! And shout out to the owner for such a lovely experience! From making everyone feel so welcome to going the extra mile taking pics of everyone who wants one!
