I have some information on Gary Rogowski (the main instructor) that I think fellow woodworkers and aspiring woodworkers that are interested in his "mastery programs" and classes will definitely want to consider. I am resigning my enrollment in Gary's nine month residency program. In the beginning of the program things were as expected. Gary did lectures and demonstrations, followed his syllabus, etc. But then I started noticing him being gone and saying he's going to "work out" and attend his "tango class" in the middle of the school day... He had key points in his prospectus and syllabus that he blatantly ignored. Then came his attitude. I have never known any grown man that was more moody, irritable and unpleasant to be around in my life. On the rare occasions that Gary is actually in the studio, his attitude will make you want to leave. He is sarcastic, rude, unhelpful, and condescending, and many other adjectives I do not have time to include. He is mean to his assistants as well, most of whom to all of his woodworking projects for him while he is busy attending to his personal life. When I had a talk with Gary breaching my concern for his lack of teaching and for his attitude, claimed that this program is "self guided and he can't give hourly instruction". Well, when I pay near as makes no difference to $20,000 to someone, I want however much instruction as possible.
I am not purposely bashing Gary Rogowski and The Northwest Woodworking studio, I am just sharing my information with as many woodworker-related people as I can so they can avoid being taken advantage of and avoid being misled by his persona that is showcased through the media.
I would, however, recommend taking classes from Zach Malcom, Jeff O'Brien, and Jack Reynolds. They very talented and kind and will give you a great deal of knowledge and assistance.
I hope this helps! read more
