Spaghetti bolo for breakfast? Hell yeah!…read more After a morning jaunt through the flea market where I snatched up a fab porcelain pastry plate for 2E, my local host suggested a mid-morning snack at this 100% authentic Belgian café. As soon as we walked through the door my heart started to flutter. The wood paneled restaurant with its large central Zinc bar, gruff but friendly waiters, formica table tops with little napkin dispensers looks like it hasn't budged in 50 years. In a word: adorable! After examining the menu thoroughly I settled on the house specialty of spaghetti bolo and a café russe to wash it all down. An incongruous blend, I know, but hey, in a 24hr Belgian diner anything goes. Needless to say the bolo was like nothing I've ever had. Served over slightly overcooked vermicelli and topped with grated gruyere, the peppery, chunky bolognaise sauce had a regressive, quirky, heartiness to it that made the whole dish super fun to eat. If I lived in BXL I could see La Clef d'Or becomming a regular post flea market spot.

Items Ordered: Almond Croissant…read moreChocolate Croissant Raisin Cream Pastry from Flanders Custard Éclair with Coffee frosting Pear Frangipane Tart Speculoos Cheesecake A small storefront with table, patio and takeout options at Zuidstraat 73 in Brussels, Le Temps des Tartines falls somewhere in the middle of the city's Boulangeries and Patisseries, a locals sort of place where the staff seems quick to become impatient with questions phrased in English while also charging extra on each item selected for indoor dining. No doubt an impassioned concept, over a dozen breads joining a wide range of pastries, tarts, choux and viennoiserie, it was to a small queue that diners were greeted early Monday morning as rain continued falling, the majority of patrons seemingly known by name to the two women behind the counter with quickfire service limiting time for decision making, an eventual order of a half dozen items boxed or bagged and taken to the patio where the small awning provided shelter from the storm and a privileged vantage to dine while the city streets came to life with those headed to the start of their workweek. Having already mentioned the substantial variety available at Le Temps des Tartines, any attempt to sample a wide breadth of the goods better suited for a group of four or more, first tastes of the Almond Croissant as well as the Pain au Chocolate showed each to be far lighter than average, the general lack of sugar welcomed as it allowed for subtlety to be noted though the lack of a crisp exterior was at the same time disappointing. Moving onward to heavier selections, the folded pastry from Flanders definitely worthwhile as soft lamination found itself wrapped around cream and raisins, those desiring a traditional Éclair will likely be disappointed as these frosted versions are sliced lengthwise with custard filling as opposed to light pastry cream, a Speculoos dusted Cheesecake equally unexpected as the base was so sour that it was actually displeasing while the Pear and Frangipane Tart was a far more satisfying experience with soft fruit well balanced by a base both smooth and sweet.

Beautiful restaurant, wonderful 7 course experience for lunch at a decent price. Was one of the few…read morerestaurants for which I could figure out how to make a reservation on short notice, so I'm appreciative of that. In 2022, the restaurant was downgraded to one star. This doesn't mean that the restaurant has flaws, though perhaps it does mean that the adventurousness or inventiveness of two-star establishments has outpaced what's going on here. This gourmand's take is that this is an excellent use of a lunch slot for the discerning eater who delights in spending three hours or more at the table. I sympathize with the difficulty of running a restaurant of this caliber. One patron was an elderly man joined by, presumably, his grandson. He was extremely demanding and gave unclear, ambiguous instructions to the staff, then complained incessantly about everything while lecturing his grandson about myriad topics. He asked for a substitution in the singular, then was incensed that his grandson did not also receive the substitution. Then, the meal proceeded, as he had ordered the 5 course, but there was some miscommunication there as well and he seemed to call off the rest of the courses. In absence of the waitstaff, he complained to the kid in the most stereotypical know-it-all fashion, then eventually turned to the table next to him and began bragging about all the restaurants he had been to, or something like that. This anecdote is relevant because some people disrespect tradition and propriety of fine dining establishments and then leave outrageously low reviews. Comme Chez Soi is proof that all you really need is the Michelin Guide.
