I decided on Hemelhuys, a little gem tucked away on a pedestrian street, a stone-throw away from Hasselt's serene cathedral, St. Quintinus, and close to the town's fancy stores and great restaurants. This quaint, welcoming boutique hotel has eight spacious rooms combining modern-day comfort with old-fashioned charm. These tastefully renovated units are spread over two old stone houses connected by a small but lush garden. The short walk through this pretty garden is aptly names Chemin du Bonheur. Both owners, Ann and Liesbeth, blend discreet elegance with genuine small-town warmth, and go out of their way to make guests feel at home. And, just like the owners, the young staff is very attentive to the guests' needs and, in addition, smiles a lot -- a pleasant touch that augments one's enjoyment of the place. Breakfasts are most inviting: a selection of assorted fresh breads and bakery products, home-made jams, cheeses, fresh fruit and, for hungrier people, a variety of egg dishes. Location + charm + service + comfort + caring owners + friendly staff = compelling combination to embrace Hemelhuys, a delightful hotel of superb taste in a town that prides itself on being Hoofdstad van de Smaak (Capital of Good Taste). I will have to lie but I'd guess they serve about 400 different beers, mostly all Belgian. So if you want to try out some Belgian beers or just want to get drunk, and you are in the neighborhood this is the place to go. (Delirium, Kwak, Karmeliet,.. being my personal favorite ones) On the down side, the service sometimes can be sloppy and you will have to wait longer than at most pubs. But all these different beers are well worth the wait!

Updated: Honoloeloe has changed its name to "Makadam"…read more A top-notch little beer bar on Grote Markt in Mechelen. This place has a nice modern vibe to it and the staff are very friendly. The owners of this bar are true beer enthusiasts and they are focusing on great Belgian beer. The Count was impressed with level of beer knowledge displayed by the owner. They had quite a few premium Belgian bottles, plus some nice beers on tap though the tap count was low at four lines. I sampled a deliciously refreshing cherry La Chouffe and tried some other offerings that were recommended. The Belgians are warming up to hoppy beers now it would seem, and I saw quite a few IPA styles now being produced by Belgian breweries. But The Count was in search of something special this time. Something not normally available at most Belgian bars. This was an episode of "Raiders of the Lost Beer". And The Count was in search of the ever-elusive Westvleteren beer, which is considered to be among the best beer in the world. This is not an easy beer to find even for Belgians. You really need to know someone Flemish who knows their beer. Fortunately, The Count knows many Flemish! Still, this superb beer can elude even Belgian beer snobs due to limited supply and high demand. After relaying the mission to the barkeep (and demonstrating our shared commitment to fine beer), he assured us he could score some of the elusive brew. He said he was connected. I won't lie. We were skeptical. Talk is cheap. But we had such a good time at Makadam (formerly Honoloeloe) that we decided to see if he could actually come through for us. We came back the next evening, ready to rib him gently for failing the mission. No shame though as many have failed to secure Westvleteren despite the best of intentions. Much to our surprise - and delight - he was a true Indiana Beer Jones! He had scored some Westvleteren 8 and some Westvleteren 12! And it was delicious and quite a treat to have this rare beer. Mind you - it didn't come cheap, since this fellow had to drive to get it and work some connections. But it was a great gift that he did this for us and showed that this bar is SERIOUS about Belgian beer. It was worth the price. So thank you Makadam! I will be back. And you are now on The Count's list of favorite beer bars around the world. If you are in Mechelen, and want to try the very best beer that Belgium has to offer, you would be remiss in not stopping by Makadam to have a beer or two...or three. It's a great place. Don't miss it. Life is too short and the beer is too good.

Sadly it seems, the owner does not like business or money. Or perhaps he just enjoys treating Kulminator as his own private club, as opposed to a normal beer bar where everyone is welcome. The owner greeted us at the door, asking us why we wished to come in and we were denied entry upon our response. We later found out that if you do not give the very specific response of "being there to TASTE (not drink) beer", you are turned away. Pompous, and absolutely ridiculous. I have no interest in trying to go back.

I was very hesitant about visiting Kulminator as its fame and reputation far precedes it, having…read morewon accolades such as "the best place in the world to have a beer" and also known to have one of the most extensive collections of aged Belgian beers in the world. During the planning stages of my trip, a lot of the feedback I got regarding this place was that I should brace for some unparalleled (lack of) service, humongous wait times in between orders, and last minute changes to opening hours. If you haven't guessed it already, I was lucky enough not to experience any of the negative feedback enumerated above, and instead had such a great time that I somehow got back to my room in Brussels without a train ticket and don't quite remember how I managed such a feat. I got to Kulminator about 15 minutes after they opened at 4:15pm and the establishment was already half-full. Despite reviews saying that this place is super cramped and cozy, the interior is actually pretty spacious with seating available at the bar, behind it, and even across from it where two tables are partitioned off kind of like a small lounge; I opted to sit in the lounge area as I was planning to be comfortable for quite some time. Leen served me for the entire evening and she was very kind and patient with all of my orders. Despite some of my orders being slightly obscure--like the oldest vintage they had of Oerbier Special Reserva, for example--all my orders got out to me under five minutes, even at 9pm when the bar was completely packed, thereby debunking the "slow and bad service" portion of my expectations. Whereas different groups of people did join me at my table for most of the night, most of them were locals popping in for a drink or two and all minded their own businesses unlike what people say about strange encounters here, but that suited me just fine for my purposes; I wanted to try some Belgian gems that aren't available anywhere on the planet, and I'm glad to say I was able to achieve said feat. I don't think I have to describe the atmosphere as it's been done in such vivid detail in so many of the other reviews (grandparents' house, etc.) but be sure to grab a bite to eat prior to visiting this place and not make the mistake of thinking drunk you will be sober enough to find something to eat after leaving this amazing Cafe; food options are limited if not non-existent, and Leen is busy enough as is keeping everyone happy. And yes, Dirk will stare you down if you do anything out of the ordinary like take pictures of the establishment, but he means well... I think.
