Interesting detail: there is a lot of controversy about the origin of the word estaminet - a typical old type pub in Northern France and Belgium, but it's really quite simple: in Spanish times, bar owners tried to attract Spanish soldiers with a leaflet outside that spelled 'esta minetta' (there is a girl). The food is classic Flemish fare, with a strong predominance of steaks with thick creamy sauces, but there are a lot of nice starters and salads, and waffles, warm appletarts with vanilla icecream and lots of different Belgian beers. A really nice combination! A nice gratin dauphinois was on the side.... Unfortunately, my really tender meat was over cooked... I mentioned it to the (friendly and efficient) staff... The owner came down and apologised... The head waitress told me that the dish would not be charged. A friendly and really professional move. And she was very impolite when we asked why the number of dishes we could choose is now half. Beside that, the entire restaurant has a smell of sewage which is not very pleasing during dinner. The kitchen is very slow and expensive for what you get. But the main conclusion is that the service is really impolite and humiliating. She humiliated my grandfather when he asked for the fish and was very very rude. So I would advise everyone to go anywhere but here because it will destroy your weekend.
