The ER staff is awful. I walked into them all fighting with each other. Just what you want to encounter as you're already shook up. Let people sit in halls unlimited hours for a bed. Halls smell like weed. No razors?? What? Do yourself a favor and go anywhere but here. read more

Was told to check in at 8am for my daughter's appointment when the original appointment was set for 11am. They said they were able to get us in earlier. We came in early for absolutely no reason. We sat there for two hours before someone came back to have us sign a paper, then waited another hour for them to take her back for the testing. It is now 1140am and we could have just came in for 11! Everytime we asked what was going on all they had to say was "we're really busy" Ridiculous The doctor on the other hand was extremely nice read more

Stay away from Mercy Hospital ER. Absolutely abominal experience. My wife began experiencing severe stomach pain at home so we proceeded to Mercy a UPMC provider. Arrived at 12:15am Monday morning. Upon arrival, waiting area exceptionally filthy with debris and empty bottles throughout. Christine registering person very polite and professional. Within 45 minutes taken into Triage attended to by Jacqueline who was very professional and caring as well. For the next 5+ hours, sat awaiting to see the only 1 Doctor on call! During this time, was subjected to 1 woman apparently drunk screaming and crying to be seen immediately. She vomited both in the Men's bathroom sink and most likely the Women's. Other pleasantries included 2 crack heads talking incessantly for 5 straight hours and several other incidents with male security doing or saying nothing other than wondering around like a butterfly . Apparently 1 individual had previously OD'd on heroin or some other substance and was eventually taken from the bathroom to be placed in the waiting area. He sat there for hours in a wheel chair in a comatose state. Eventually, we were brought back to see physician for examination and placed on a cart in the hallway along with several others. Blood drawn and urine tests taken by Carly who was outstanding in her care. (she was subjected to repeated outbursts and foul language from the drunk who was carted next to my wife. Carly handled the situation and repeated disturbences quite amazingly well) Doctor eventually appeared, asked a few questions, did a physical exam and ordered a CT. CT findings were negative and probably resulting from severe intestinal virtus. Was released shortly before Noon on Monday nearly 12 hours later! Whomever is responsible for staffing, maintenance and coordination of the ER should be terminated immediatley. While the staff on hand did a wonderful job, they were grossly short handed. Finally, in the course of our 12 hour stay, a female cleaning woman appeared 1 time. She did not clean bathrooms, did not pick up debris or throw out empty bottles. She moved at a snail's pace, totally disinterested in her supposed responsibilities and completely uncaring about cleaning. Should be terminated IMMEDIATELY. read more

My husband was admitted as an emergency trauma patient and stayed a week. The entire experience was HIDEOUS and I would never use this hospital again. The ED and their staff were terrible, cold and unprofessional. The ONLY saving grace of this place was the 7th floor nurses. And even there, like the ED, nobody communicates with anyone else which results in terrible "care". Never again.​ read more

My mom fell down while I was at work yesterday. When I got back home and she told me what happened, I immediately called for an ambulance. She was taken to this hospital and I was informed when I called that she had broken her hip and would need surgery. I've been trying to get information today about my mom's condition but all they do is tell me that they're busy doing something else and will call me back which so far, they haven't done. When someone calls this hospital and asks about a family member, information should be provided immediately. read more

Saturday afternoon. Couldn't get into the hospital. Lack of signage. Only one door was open to the hospital and it was inside the parking garage. After wandering around outside for a while we finally found a hospital employee to ask. No signage anywhere to point folks the way. Really puts more stress on an already stressful situation. I broke my ankle in 3 places when I was downtown and I feel very lucky that I was taken to Mercy in the ambulance. I got fast treatment in the ER, which enabled me to only have one surgery for my ankle instead of two, which was a definite possibility. They set my ankle quickly and took very good care of me. The 5th and 11th floor nursing staff also took good care of me on the nights before and after my surgery. Everyone was very nice and made sure I had the best care possible. The anesthesia team did an amazing job! I have always been VERY sick any time I've been under anesthesia (throwing up for 3 days typically) and thanks to the team at Mercy, I threw up a little bit ONCE the first time I was able to walk to the bathroom after surgery. That is an amazing improvement. Surgery seemed to go well, though I'm still not at the point where I'm able to put any pressure on my ankle. I wish I had been told more clearly how long I'd need to be on crutches with absolutely NO weight on my bad ankle. Since it was in a boot immediately, I didn't realize it would be over 6 weeks before I could even put pressure on it with crutches. Due to the pain I have just when I drive on bumpy roads, I understand this, but I had no idea how massive the surgery was, so having it explained to me in the hospital (rather than being told 2 weeks and then told 4 weeks at my first follow-up appointment) would have been very nice. I'd never broken a bone before. I didn't know how much the boot protected the ankle, but it seemed similar to the immobilizer situation I'd had with knee surgeries. It would have been nice to know right away and be able to rearrange more of my life, but generally everyone took very good care of me. read more

If you have a child DO NOT go to the ED for help. We were transferred from Children's Hospital to Mercy ED to see the Burn Team as a consult. Our child's wounds were neglected by the ED Doctor. Burn Team was unable to tend to my child because of her blatant negligence and personal vendetta against me for questioning her care of MY 11 month old child, which ANY and EVERY parent is legally allowed. ER room had the previous patients DIRTY black and blue American Eagle boxers on the stretcher. The previous patients urine jug was sitting in the sink as well. I will never again go to Mercy ER for anything ever. I have told all our family and friends the same. I suggest you go to AHN over UPMC. read more

15 minute wait in the ER for my dad who hurt his arm. Turned out it was broken. I am scared about how this will work with insurance payments since it is out of network, but we were on the road and could not wait. 2 months later his arm is getting better and is getting therapy back home. Knocked some stars off though because of the bathrooms. But, there is a good wait time. That is what is important read more

My wife treats at UPMC Mercy - so this is my observation as I waited for her surgery to be completed. The hospital is very clean - I was only in the common areas, but they were very clean. I saw nothing that was in disrepair. Parking was easy to access. The fee, with the voucher, was $2 for about 10 hours of parking. Food - typical cafeteria food. Nothing to write home about, but it was decent. Appointment- our 10 a.m. surgery got bumped to 5 p.m. with the length of surgery and the recovery time, this put us home at 2:30 a.m. not happy about this. Medical staff - I was very impressed with the physician. She explained the surgery to me and the period of recovery. Overall, I am impressed with UPMC. read more

Once again I received wonderful and beyond competent care at mercy. I unfortunately ended up in the ED recently due to a horrible infection. I was treated ASAP upon arrival and every single person I encountered from the valet, security, check in, triage nurse and physicians were very kind and caring. I work as a nurse and travel to many facilities and I can confidently say that mercy is the best hands down on all aspects of health care needs. They truly do treat the person as well as the illness. Dr. Yates in the ED recognized the origin of my infection right away and he and his student were not only very professional but also exhibited extreme kindness as well. His bedside manner is excellent and his student was very personable as well. These are the kind of providers that I wish there were more of in todays healthcare industry! My 99 year old mother went after tripping and bumping her head. Upon arrival, showing no symptoms, she was tested and presented with covid 19 and a uti as well as a bad bump and bruises on her arm, leg and head. She remained in E r for 24 hrs then admitted. The staff literally ignored her due to covid. She laid in bed for 5 days in Quarantine-never giving a sponge bath or a toothbrush. Pushed her out of the hospital after 7 days needing 3 people to put her in a wheel chair saying she was medically ok. She came in walking with a cane and atrophied to not able to stand on her own. They explained that normal covid stays are 10 days but they only kept her 7 and she is, like I said, 99. read more

Hey mercy hospital Husband had simple skin graft and died for no reason. 30 years old good health no issues and he bleeds out no one told me anything! By the time I was told to get to the hospital he was dead!!!! They sent me into his room where they were giving him blood there was blood everywhere!!!!! I can't stop seeing it! I touch him he was ice cold!!! He died hours ago and no one told me!!! I asked to speak to the Dr and they sent a Dr in that wasn't even his!! She knew nothing. I was never able to speak to the Dr. I was given no explanation!!!! I lost my husband my kids lost their dad and no one could tell me why. Everything was handled so poorly. And covered up!!!! They told me he was in Surgery and never stopped bleeding out!!! Why take him back to his room if you can't control the bleeding!!!!! Why send his wife into a room covered in her husbands blood! they pushed me into that room. I stepped in blood! No one should ever have to see that and live with that!!! Where to start? So Last Saturday my 21 year old daughter realized something was wrong with her vision. So I told her to get to Med express. They triaged her and sent her to West Penn. After 3 hours in the ER they said, "We don't have an eye DR on call... go home and come back tomorrow." I said NO GOING HOME! This is your eye. So I sent her to Mercy. They diagnosed a retinal detachment immediately and scheduled surgery for Monday AM with bedrest Sunday. So Monday- her father took her to the first surgery. Both eyes needed done. I wasn't at this surgery, but they allowed her dad to go back before surgery since she's young. They hard a hard time getting her IV in but one of the nurses, Nancy, sat with her and talked to her the entire time. Fast forward to today. I found out at 4 I was taking her (her dad had wanted to but that's another story). I'm two hours away so she got herself to the hospital and I drove there as quickly as I could. I got there and pushed the button to enter the parking garage. Flew in and parked. After going up, I realized I'd forgotten to get a ticket. OOOPS! So they allowed me to go back with Abbey while they got her ready. They were absolutely AMAZING. Every single person we encountered treated her like she was their only patient today. The anesthesiologist told her step by step what they'd do and why. The Resident came in and told her step by step what they'd do. And then the Dr came and went over it again. In the mean time Nancy came in and raved about Abbey and what a joy she was and what a great job I did with her. Abbey goes back for surgery and it lasts a pretty long time. A nurse, Adrien, was walking by to grab another family member and told me it was taking a while but it's a long tedious surgery. She didn't have to stop and offer that info. Then, later she came out and as she came out for someone else I saw my daughter had gone into recover ii so I assumed i could go back soon. I said , "OH she just changed, does that mean I can come back soon?" She said, "Come with me now". :) In recovery Nancy stopped again to rave about Abbey. She said she wished she could hug her but obviously couldn't. Gave her some air hugs LOL Abbey's nurse was also super kind but I'm sorry I forget her name! So it dawned on me I'd forgotten the ticket and explained I'd have to figure that out. Her nurse called down (was it Linda?) and asked the parking person about us getting out The lady she spoke to said no we'd have to pay $22 as opposed to $2. Even though we had the same day surgery discount pass just not the main ticket. Well! The head nurse. Wait..maybe she was Linda? walks down to the parking garage and tries to retrieve us a ticket. it won't work. So she stops and speaks to James- the parking guy. He says, "Bring them down" so we go down. She says "James, these are the friends I told you about" I tried to give James my discount ticket so I can pay my $2. He refused and said, "You're not paying anything for parking!" Totally not what I expected, but what a sweetheart. So in the end, I'm thankful West Penn kicked her out because UPMC Mercy you kick butt! read more

i spent six days in Mercy in September. The Emergency Room experience was good. After being sent upstairs it was horrible. The bathroom was filthy and the food was inedible. i had to ask for a shower after four days. i had a fractured pelvis and the aide tried to take me to a bathroom that would have required me to step into a bathtub. Very unbelievable since I was in a wheelchair. The day I was transferring to rehab the transporter never showed to pick me up. I was left outside the Emergency Room alone to wait for my daughter to drive me to rehab. read more

My 85 year old mom was transported to this hospital after taking a serious fall. The treatment in the emergency department was horrible, the nurses were cold spirited, nonchalant and slow to respond. We waited for 10 -15 minutes for a bed pan. Can you imagine an 85 year old being forced to almost urinate in the bed. We waited 3 hours for a room, not because there wasn't one available; because the departments were not communicating to get it done. After being admitted to the 7th floor, the nurses were friendlier and more eager to help. My intent was to leave an up to par review. But, there are too many small details that are overlooked. The therapist is running late, the meal plan is limited, the nurse leaves the UNCLEAN bed pans in the bathroom on top of the toilet or near the sink, very unsanitary. Not the worst hospital in the world, but they are lacking the feeling of "going the extra mile." The hospital needs a new administrator or a new form of leadership that is willing to implement systems that will eliminate bad review. Back at the hospital with my mom. This time the 12th floor. The emergency room visit was way better than 8 months ago. The service was fast and the support staff was friendly. We are now on the 12th floor and it's on to a bad experience. My mom hasn't been bathed in 2 days. Thank goodness my mom is not as sick as she was 8 months ago. read more

I live in Johnstown Pa. and over the summer of 23' my wife noticed that I wasn't acting like myself so we went to see our family doctor. He sent me for an MRI and found an abnormality on my brain but they didn't know what it was. The medical options in Johnstown are functional at best and I certainly wouldn't trust them with any major operations or even to correctly read the MRI. My family doctor recommended me to Dr. Bradley Gross at UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh for an angiogram of the brain. Dr. gross found an aneurysm on my brain that had a real possibility of rupturing and suggested to have preventative surgery to keep the aneurysm from killing me. Dr. Gross works with some of the most brilliant people that I have ever met and he referred me to Dr. Michael Lang (Neurosurgeon) to perform the surgery. I met with Dr. Lang and part of his team (Julie) to be specific, to discuss my options and they sat with my wife and I and answered absolutely every question and concern that we had. Dr. Lang was called out to emergency surgery prior to my scheduled consultation and came back after surgery and spent about 45 minutes with us. November 22, 2023 was my scheduled surgery to repair/remove the aneurysm. I was at UPMC Mercy at 4:30 am the day before Thanksgiving for brain surgery. I was told from the time I was prepared for surgery to the time I was in ICU and talking with my family after the surgery was about 15 hours. I was in ICU on the 8th floor from 11/22/23 to 11/24/23, Thanksgiving day was 11/23/23 and Dr. Lang actually came in on his personal time to see me and check on my recovery. I have much more that I could type here but I want to make sure that I get this point across. EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE that I had an interaction with at UPMC Mercy from the valet parking people to the PA that removed the staples from my head were very professional, informative, caring and genuine about helping and caring for their patients. Well I have been in three different hospitals this last week visiting patients. Mercy has been the most impressive of the three. From the parking lot worker, explaining how to get into the hospital to the medical staff who offered to show us where the Starbucks was (in addition to telling us) -hands down very customer/patient/visitor oriented. Not sure if it was because it was Christmas Eve or what but their genuine kindness and helpfulness sure got my attention. The gift shop was by far the superior of the three hospitals as well, with such a lovely selection and a great Christmas discount! Well done Mercy, well done ! PS. I'm surprised at how much this place is holding together given the pandemic. Dietary us responsive to complaints. Unfortunately your food may be cold if you have Covid because they have to go with foam trays. Medical staff seem competent and caring. Mercy Hospital saved my father's life this evening. In 2007, he had a heart attack and had a stent put in. Early this evening, he was having pains again, and we had the EMT's take him to Mercy where he was seen and treated swiftly. It turned out that the stent was blocked. I want to extend a personal note of thanks to Dr. Shah (the cardiologist), Dr. Toby (can't recall his last name), and the two nurses (both named Jenny) who cared for him. We were never left waiting for more than an hour, were given frequent updates on my father's condition, and were never left wondering about his status, which made a suddenly stressful evening a little easier to take. Again, thank you all. You're still a top-flight facility despite being overtaken by the for-profit Goliath that is UPMC. read more

Staff and physicians are pleasant. Short wait times with reasonable parking fees compared to other hospitals in the burg. Hospital appears clean even through the remodel. It is very nice to see the updates and modern look and feel that is coming to Mercy. read more

UPMC Mercy ER does not provide care that is needed. I brought my friend to the ER who was intoxicated and unresponsive to stimuli and they refused to hydrate him as needed. Instead they decided to wait to see if he woke. Poor practice but glad my friend did not suffer lasting deficits read more

I was admitted into UPMC Mercy on March 17 after having surgery and hav been hard to wean from the vent. I was placed on a monitor for O2 saturation on the 8th floor. At approximately 3 a.m. the machine started making a noise and the red light started to flash. This of course woke me up. I got it to stop making noise and almost drifted back to sleep. In about 2 minutes it went off again. I got it stopped again and turned on the light for the nurse. The machine kept beeping, I kept turning it off, and the nurse never came. Finally at around 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. the aide finally showed up, looked at the machine after I told her what the problem was. She said she'd try to find a replacement, left my room and never came back. I turned the light on again. The machine kept going off until the nurse (who was very responsive and helpful) showed up and had a solution for my problem at around 6:00 a.m. The physician soon arrived and disconnected the machine. I got no sleep that night, my blood sugar went up as did my blood pressure. I have been admitted to several hospitals and I have never had an experience like this. I got no rest and poor treatment in your hospital. I expected a better quality of care in a UPMC facility. I am very disappointed with my experience. Also I was told I was supposed to be on a heart monitor, but there were none available. read more

Refused to do surgery on my 5 year old son for tubes. Reason? He was a premie.....but NO MEDICAL PROBLEMS?!?

Amazing nursing staff; very warm, welcoming and accommodating. They got my IV in with one shot (the nurse used to work in NICU). I had my endoscopy here with Dr. Glorioso, who is a great gastroenterologist. The nurse anesthetists were second to none. They made sure I was comfortable and alleviated my nausea with a neat little trick - a small pad doused in rubbing alcohol. Also, I had told them I was looking forward to watching France play in the World Cup after the procedure. When I woke up, one of the nurse anesthetists had turned it on the tv in the recovery area. It was a lovely personal touch. Best hospital experience I could've had. read more

I had a great experience at UPMC Mercy. I was transferred to their labor and delivery ward after a long labor at a nearby birthing center where my labor never progressed. I was in need of an emergency C-section. The nurses, doctors, and all other staff treated me with the utmost respect my entire stay. I was well-informed about all the medical decisions being made. They were also great with my son. I love this hospital and plan to deliver any future children here. read more

I have been spending a good amount of time here lately and have been impressed with this hospital. My sister in law was transferred needing an emergency c section. The nurses, doctors and staff were fantastic. They kept us well informed and treated my family well. Most importantly they calmed her anxieties and delivered the baby without an issue. We spent about a day and a half there so we got to explore a bit. The chapel is beautiful! The other decor and old photographs add a historical charm to the building. The cafeteria had a wide variety of food and everything was delicious. I was excited to find a nice salad station! They have a lot of hot foods, a deli spot and some grab and go items in the coolers. Even when the cafeteria was full of people the lines moved quickly and they had plenty of seating. The gift shop had some pretty flowers and other gift items you could pick up. They also had different treats and any other items you may have forgotten. I was relieved to find some pain medicine there for the migraine I was getting. We spent a good portion of time in the maternity waiting room. It's nothing fancy but it offers some lovely views of the water and has its own restroom which is nice. They also have a good amount of seating and a television to help pass the time. If you get the munchies there are some vending machines as well. Love that they play a little song every time a baby is born. So cute! However, it is currently being renovated when I was there this weekend. My most recent trip was to take my friends to deliver their baby. She has different allergy restrictions and the dietary staff went above and beyond to make sure she was safe. The nurses did the same thing. They removed any allergens from her room and checked with her about any medications she would be receiving. If you have allergies yourself you know how important it is to have people take them seriously. You'd expect a hospital to do that but she has had bad encounters at another area hospital. This hospital is always clean when I'm there and the staff are very friendly! My entire family has been impressed with this facility especially the maternity ward. Everyone I know who has stayed here was treated with respect and that's most important to me. read more

Maybe HARD TO BELIEVE, but this 55 year old male was FULLY conscious, alert and oriented when transported to UPMC's trauma center against my will after a BMX crash at South Park BMX. Medical records note, "ARRIVED CONSCIOUS, ALERT AND ORIENTED", and "Denies medical problems" (did not want care), and "STATED HE DID NOT WANT TO BE TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL". Every adult of sound mind has the right to refuse care since 1914, but strapped to a stretcher with a neck brace contraption around me, I was unable to move at all when they cut off all of my clothes and jabbed an IV or something sharp into my abdominal area, then subjected me to over $15,000 of scanning tests. The conclusion was "No evidence of traumatic injury". No injuries of any kind were actually cared for - just $15,000 of unwanted scanning tests that found nothing... After a $500 co-pay, rest would be covered by my insurance, but this was Medical Battery and Assault folks. Submitted complaints to the Dept of Health, Dept of State and Attorney General's Office with ultimately no help... UPMC claims that I initially balked at care, but then consented to it (while strapped down to a stretcher and unable to move and with something sharp jabbed into me). To have consent, it must be 1) voluntary, and 2) free from duress. It might be hard to imagine the fear that takes over a person when they are completely unable to move anything but their hands to the wrist and people are doing things to you that you don't want them to, and then you start to feel a sharp pain being inflicted to your abdominal area but a neck brace prevents you from even seeing what they are doing. HARD TO BELIEVE, but 100% true. Shame on you UPMC!! read more

As hospitals go, the people in this one are great. Super nice and they take every single question and concern as their #1 priority. I never felt unheard or ignored by the support staff & nurses. Parking was free for 2 hours which was great. The care delivered was probably too much given the conditions being treated, but perhaps it's better to err on the side of too much than too little. In terms of it being a "healing" place... nope. Not really. Their spiritual counselors were omnipresent, but none seemed trained to do more than pray and give palliative counsel. The notion of "healing" is squarely in the allopathic/medical model as one would expect from an insurance driven hospital, and it is the only detriment of this place. Typical stuff. Over reliance and over delivery of pharmaceuticals... especially antibiotics. Arrogance and ignorance in the medical staff when questioned or advised about non allopathic treatment or remedies. They wanted to prescribe an antibiotic regimen to my 86 year old father for a minor gum infection when I suggested that it could be dealt with in a couple days with colloidal silver. She was irate at the suggestion and arrogantly admonished by father, "Don't take that!" Ignorance is one thing, but arrogance is indicative of deeper issues in perceiving clients as whole human beings living in a complex world with people that may have better information and experience than their corporate medical degrees can certify. For what they do, they're pretty good at it. Corporate hospitals have a long way to go to be actual places of healing. They're more like autobody shops for humans. And boy oh boy it's hard to find a good mechanic sometimes, eh? They're pretty good mechanics here. read more
