My Mom moved to Fair Oaks after rehab in a skilled nursing facility. Choosing this facility was a…read moremistake, unfortunately. My Mom was there a little over 30 days and from the beginning I had some minor concerns: for example, they change the WiFi password for residents, but no one can tell you what the new password is. You're sent to the security desk to ask, but no one is usually there. What made my concerns escalate and decide to remove her were 2 things: the 2nd floor (where they have people who need more attention) is often not staffed in the evening. One day I heard a man next to my Mom calling "help" for over 10 minutes. I walked up and down the hall and couldn't find anyone for him and no one was at the security desk (of course). Eventually a staff member did find him and immediately chided him instead of doing the human thing and offering him respect and help. The next thing that happened was my Mom fell (she had repeated falls while there, in part this is her own stubbornness in trying to walk unassisted when she can't, but it also speaks to their staffing problems). This time she needed to go the ER and no one from the facility called to tell me she was there. The ER eventually did, 6 hours after she was admitted. If this had been a life and death situation, I could have not been there for my Mom in her final hours. This made up my mind to listen to her saying she was unhappy there and find another facility. I've read rumors online there is also a bed bug infestation, but I can not confirm if that is true or not, I didn't see any while I was there.

Canterbury Place - Typical breakfast, the eggs are NOT real, sausage is turkey sausage and good luck getting two pieces of toast.

Once there you're tagged like a prisoner and can't leave even if you want to sign yourself out. I had to threaten calling the police before they let me go. I think many patients are kept there against their will. Very suspicious operation .

The night shift nurses can't / won't correct them because most of them disappear every half hour to go outside and smoke. Some of the nurses from Nigeria and Cameroon don't speak clearly enough to be working with patients. Oh, you will get the dog and pony show when you go to check the place out but it's never like that. Patient are left in front of the nurses station for hours with nothing to do. The 24 open door policy is a laugh - you have to ring a bell and get buzzed in which can take a while. If you are on one of the good floors with a private room then you won't have to beg for a shower. The top floors are the nicest but that's all out of pocket living. The food is universal across all of the UPMC facilities; this place serves the same boring menu every two weeks. You can get alternates like a hamburger or wings but be prepared for ATTITUDE. If you are eating in your room you may or may not get a replacement meal. The place can be loud even with locked units. Some nurses have true attitude and talk to you like you are five year old. Well, that is if they can get off their cell phones or stop text messaging long enough. It is a shame that the older residents are treated like crap. No sooner do they get done with dinner are nurses and aides getting them ready for bed. Is it any wonder why they are up and screaming at three in the morning. At first glace the place seems nice but if you need to stay more than a week, prepare yourself to get shuffled from room to room. Because of their complete incompetence I lost a huge chun of 2016 while they screwed around milking my insurance company.

I enjoyed coming to visit her with our other sister. We always felt welcomed. We found the place to be always clean, the staff friendly and the activities enjoyable. They had a guy sing & play an accordion one time of "oldies but goodies" & it was in their activity room. And yes, we sang along!! So fun! At times, I'd bring us an "indoor picnic" (food from home) to a small dining room area for us to enjoy. My sister felt like we were visiting her in her home. I could tell that she was treated with respect and kindness. The Nursing staff & even the Welcoming Greeter Terri who has visitors sign in, knew my sister well. They make time for each resident to get to know them. I'd recommend anyone wanting their loved one needing skilled nursing care as a final residence to consider Halcyon Senior Living.
