I am a big fan of 69 Colebrooke Row, so when I heard the people behind it were opening a new place in Dalston, I couldn't wait to check it out. It was relatively easy to get a booking, which I find is often the case in East London (less tourists in the area, among other things). It's also very easy to find, being just a few steps away from Dalston Junction station, and for some reason has a bouncer in front of it, who at the time was managing the walk in situation in tandem with a guy with an iPad. Since I had made a booking, and spoken to them on the phone earlier in the day to request seating in the restaurant area, we were seated right away without a problem. The bar area is very busy, and I think only suitable for groups of 2. We came for the cocktails, and I enjoyed the waif (apparently the top seller) and the amber, which is a newer addition but also a best seller. I had originally thought I would go for the sicily, but the server informed me that it was "dark and bitter," although the description is "citrus, verbena, and orange blossom." Go figure. It's rather difficult to know if you will like a cocktail if you don't know what alcohol it is based on, and none of the descriptions seem to tell you that (they didn't seem to have this problem at 69 Colebrooke Row...). My friend asked if they had a whisky based drink, and they said no, so they gave him the "gonzo" which is supposed to be "like an old fashioned," but turned up to be pretty much straight tequila (description: caramel, buckwheat, ambrette). Your cocktail ordering fate is entirely in the hands of your server. I had read good reviews about the food, so we had dinner too and got the hot buckwheat noodles (basically soba) in chicken broth with crispy chicken skin and egg yolk, the slow cooked beef rib, the aubergine with miso, and the seaweed in tempura. The portion sizes are really small. The noodle dishes are all basically vegetarian, aside from that piece of chicken skin, and I thought it was very mediocre. The side dishes were just a few mouthfuls each, and it's as if you should order them tapas style, because 3 is probably not enough. For dessert we got the chocolate in sweet tempura, and I thought that was quite unique. Overall I think Untitled still has some teething issues, but it's a beautiful place and I hope they get this all ironed out soon! read more
