Durham needs a place with a rooftop pool, so this place really did have some good potential except for a few things: 1) very small portions of overpriced food; 2) tiny, TINY pool; 3) cheap-looking bright sky-blue exterior around the rooftop patio area. That being said, this is probably one of the few places in Durham where you could come to enjoy some Top 40's party music, eat food and order drinks, and not be at Shooters. read more

We booked a room at Unscripted Durham last minute after getting drunk watching the Dollop live show at the Carolina Theatre. This hotel was alright for a last minute "too drunk to drive home" booking, but I wouldn't recommend it for anything else. We checked in & found that the cups in our room were visibly dirty. We also discovered that the laundry bag in the armoire had brown smears and brown chunks of something on it. "Is this poop or chocolate" is not something you EVER want to have to ask yourself in a hotel room -- especially not when you're paying close to $200 a night. Additionally, the beers that were provided in the hotel room had mold on them. The phone also did not work, so we had to walk down to the front desk to voice any concerns. We were offered a complementary breakfast voucher because of all the issues we had. Ultimately, we turned down that offer. The room was messy and we found mold and probably feces on items in our room, so we didn't feel like rolling the dice on food poising. The woman at the front desk during check out also stated that she would be waiving some of our fees due to the issues we had -- so we'll see. All in all, I wouldn't recommend The Unscripted Durham to anyone. They're far too focused on how to make the hotel trendy when they should be making sure they've got the basics covered. You'd be better off making a reservation elsewhere, but if you're in a pinch it's probably a little better than a motel. read more

Absolutely terrible. The staff was very polite, but this is clearly run by inexperienced managers. The room had NO WINDOWS. I do not think I have heard of a hotel that had rooms with no windows. Even Motel 8 has windows. It felt like I was staying at an insane asylum. Not only that, but the carpet and walls were stained and the rooms were generally gross. My wife and I thought the one redeeming quality would be the rooftop pool, but it is $50 to just sit in a chair, and $300 to sit at a table, even if you are staying at the hotel already. The staff clearly realize this is idiotic as they were very respectful and tried to be accommodating, but clearly their hands were tied due to poor management. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS! read more

TL;DR: no windows, fire alarm at 1:30 am, awkward check-in/out, blaring music, drunk people, strong fragrance, unpredictable housekeeping, good location Stayed here for a downtown wedding. Came in on a late flight, so we did late check-in. The lobby becomes a nightclub after a certain point at night; partiers looked at us askance when we came into the "lobby" with suitcases. Check-in desk is hidden in a back corner, so had to drag suitcases through throngs of tipsy dancing people. Room itself was an "interior" king. This meant the room had no windows. There were also some odd/inconvenient design choices in the room itself. TV was off to the side instead of at the foot of the bed, so you have to lay on your side to watch it. Toilet paper holder in the bathroom was in a weird location, which made it somewhat difficult to reach. Hanging bedside lamp could not be turned off from the bed itself--switch was too far away. First night there, a drunk girl started pounding on our door at 5 am. After being told she had the wrong room, she basically went door to door loudly knocking on doors until she eventually found hers. Third night, the fire alarm went off at 1:30 am, effectively evacuating the hotel (no fire, no explanation--seems likely someone pulled it.) Housekeeping did not clean the room until 4 or 4:30 pm most days. They also use a very strong fragrance in the cleaning process, which was not very pleasant. Music blares from the pool deck during the day, contributing some extreme noise pollution into downtown, especially on weekends. Pool deck and lobby club music thankfully could not be heard from inside the room. Upon check out, went down to ask about credit card charges (they put a $50/night hold on your card) and no one was staffing the desk for a solid 10 minutes, which seemed like a fitting end to a subpar stay. The positives are that it's in a great location that's within walking distance of many downtown highlights, the bed was comfortable, there was plenty of hot water, staff was friendly and enthusiastic (when they were at their posts), and--as a Durham native--I'm glad someone made something out of this decrepit parking garage, even if that something is one of the most frustrating hotels I have stayed in. read more

We loved staying here at the Jack Tar / Unscripted Durham hotel! We are locals, but this was our anniversary weekend "staycation" and it was the right choice. From walking in the doors and being greeted by friendly, professional staff to hanging out in the retro-hip lobby, to getting to our modern-yet-cozy room, everything was great. We stayed on the same floor as the pool and though some other reviewers mentioned the noise level, for us it was pretty quiet all around. I liked that (at least for our level) the rooms were accessed from the outside so you could walk by and enjoy the downtown view from the pool. The room (the Studio King) itself was cozy, and I want to point out that the curtains were the thick, light-blocking kind which is crucial for those who have a difficulty sleeping in new places where sometimes the curtains are too thin and let in too much light. That was no issue here! We stayed here right before Christmas, so the lobby was decked-out in hip, modern holiday-themed lights and it made you want to stay and hang-out for awhile. When we walked in, Jordan working at the desk graciously offered to take instagram-worthy pics for us to share. Really made us feel welcome. The location is great for scouting out around downtown and enjoying the many restaurants and attractions offered, but you really cannot leave this place without having a meal at the Jack Tar - The Colonel's Daughter. The breakfast there was delicious and almost too good for words, really. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and had no complaints! read more

Check in was great, with complimentary wine, and the decor is uber charming. The staff was friendly and engaging as well. My only adjusting feedback would be for the bar service at All Day, it was a little loose in terms of getting drinks out quickly and professionally- the bar wasn't busy, but I think they were training some new people. This is easily my new favorite hotel. Unscripted is a boutique-style hotel that blends a mid-20th century facade, late century blended decorum, and modern functionality with an almost retro appeal. It's tucked into the very center of Durham, amidst a reinvigorated downtown. It's surrounded by several great restaurants, shops, entertainment, and community-based organizations. The space is layered, with an upper level bar, lower level workout facility, a parking garage onsite, and lobby space on some of the individual hotel floors. The place is decorated with a combination of modern art, graffiti, and stylish timebound decorum. But, somehow it all works together. The individual rooms are cute and comfortable with great views of the courtyard plaza, pool, or the panoramic cityscape. And the customer service fantastic. From the first email we sent to them asking if they could meet the federal government per diem rate to the moment we left to return to D.C., we always encountered hospitality. The best part of the customer experience may have been when they greeted us based on our profession and thanked us for our contribution to our field of work. I was honored that they took the time to pay attention to our mission. That is individualized service. This place has more character than any hotel I've been to. This hotel was pretty cool--the location is perfect. You are smack dab in the center of All Things Durham. It was a special trip so we splurged on a king corner room. The room was superbly clean and well appointed. We are a fan of the mid-century modern fixtures and furniture. The bathroom has a separate toilet area with its own private door. The bathroom offers double sinks and a large, walk-in shower with no door. The king room did offer bathrobes which I'm always a fan of! Being smack dab in city center makes for a good walk-able location but not so much for a quiet, restful spot. Due to rainy weather, the pool patio was quite subdued. However, there was quite a bit of noise from the street. Nothing a white noise machine didn't help to diminish but still this wasn't a very "relaxing" place to catch up on sleep or enjoy peace & quiet...but if you're going for more of a party atmosphere that won't really matter! We caught two nights of live music: one with a fabulous live singer inside the hotel lobby and the second was a rather low-key DJ kinda aimlessly spinning records. Could have used some more energy there! But regardless there's plenty of reserved spots for hotel guests to hang at the pool, nosh on some decent food served up by super friendly staff, and drink some pretty original drinks in a decent setting. Pool music stops around 9:00 during the week and just a bit later on the weekend. By 11:00 PM the staff had emptied out the pool hustle and bustle. The staff was very welcoming and friendly...being greeted with a glass of wine upon arrival is certainly a great, personable touch. Check-in was very easy to find and seamless both upon arrival and departure. The cons to this hotel would be lack of coffee in rooms and it is a bit noisy. If you are up for more of a party-type hotel then book your room at Unscripted--you won't be disappointed! read more

I stayed at Unscripted Durham while attending a concert in town. Getting to Durham ended up being quite an ordeal after a bomb threat at the Orlando airport that messed up flights really badly. I got stuck in Atlanta for the night and asked my boyfriend to call ahead to Unscripted to let them know I wouldn't be able to make my reservation for that evening. When I arrived the next day, the same person that spoke to my boyfriend greeted me and right away knew my story (of all the airport trauma) and let me check in early and get to a badly needed shower and bed. I wish I had taken down her name but the exhaustion caused me to forget. She was incredibly sweet and after 24 hours of travel hell it was so nice to walk into someone who wanted to help me and had compassion. The hotel itself is really unique, reminds me more of an apartment complex than hotels. My room didn't have any windows which was odd but allowed me to get some great sleep. They have Smart TVs in the room so I was able to Chromecast YouTube to the TV! The shower and bathroom were huge and luxurious. If I'm back in Durham I'll definitely come back to Unscripted. Even though I booked an in-state room with one bed, the room was a decent size and the bathroom looked better than my bathroom at home! Great bed, great shower, a nice large sized room. I sat here for five minutes trying to figure out what I liked best about the hotel. The location was great. The decor was imaginative​ and fun. The staff was​ friendly and polite. I could have lived in the bathrooms - amazing. My bed was comfortable, good TV selection, radio and plenty of USB outlets. Oh, and I had a personal note with a free drink card and a discount on ​breakfast. How nice. But I think the reason I like it best was the owners. In the morning, I put on my flannel PJs and headed downstairs to grab a cup of coffee. I met a lovely woman in the elevator and found out she was the owner. She​ and her husband were about to have coffee and talk business. We all chatted for a few minutes and they couldn't have been more pleasant. Based on the style, I would have figured snooty people who are into fashion versus substance, this was not the case. I travel a lot and have the best and the worst. The personal touches and attention to comfort are​ what makes this a five-star hotel for me. In closing, when you read reviews about people complaining about fees, I would like to clarify that many of them are created by the town, not the hotel. I've been here twice now-and was really disappointed on both occasions. Unscripted is a great concept-and if they can get their act together-will have a booming business! Pros-rooftop pool, rooftop bar, lounge chairs, downstairs bar, great decor. Cons-over priced drinks-that aren't that great, unpleasant bartenders, music a titch too loud My first visit was at their grand opening-I ordered a monitor and was sorely disappointed-it tasted like they used some cheap sour mix instead of real lime juice and good rum-at a whopping $12 a drink-this missed the mark by about $8. The staff was pretty green and not all that accommodating. Second visit-went up to grab a drink after dinner at another spot. There were no signs in the elevator to say how late the bar was open and really no guidance at all-so we ended up going to the top floor instead of the rooftop floor. When we got to the bar the bartenders told me they just had last call, but I could order if it was quick-so I did-but she then snatched the menu from my hands before my date could order. She then told me they had no more wine-so we left. The customer service just seemed lacking each time and that means the most to me. read more

So I'm here now writing this review and I'm on the roof top by the pool and lounge and I feel like I'm in Miami. Which for me is a great thing because I love the vibe of that city. It feels so much like summer and fun with an eclectic vibe. The bright colors really add to the feel of this place and the fact that they have some great music blasting, after I long morning at work I needed this to keep my energy levels up. So now for the drinks, they have a good selection of cocktails and beers, I went with the frose. It's like rose but frozen and comes with strawberries and it's so good. It's the only frozen drink they have but on a 90 degree day it was really refreshing. I only had one but I think I could definitely have a couple. I wanted a quick snack so I ordered the Gyoza. They were chicken potstickers and they weren't bad. The dipping soy sauce we sort of spicy and I thought they could have been a little more flavorful but over all I would give them a B+. They came out fast and hot! The bartender was very friendly and checked on my to ensure I had everything I needed. I will definitely come here again and hopefully I can check out the pool. Trendy new hotel in central Durham. I think what needs to be clarified is the audience here. We live a few towns over, we just wanted a nice weekend in Durham because it's such a great town. I found this hotel by searching for "fun hotel in Durham". This hotel is clearly aimed at fun, hip 20-somethings who wanna stay at a place with an awesome bar and only have to walk a few fee to collapse in their room. For an older couple looking for a quiet place to sleep between touring the city, not so much. Good + +Awesome location. It's right in the center of town, you can easily walk to the tobacco campus, to lots of places to eat, 10 minutes from Duke and other attractions. Could walk to DPAC and the baseball field as well. +Clean. Nice decor. It's all renovated and looks it. Room was in good repair, nothing broken, everything seemed to work. Really cool light fixtures in the bathroom. +Very friendly staff. Seemed cheerful. +Awesome Tech. The TV has google home built in so you can watch youtube and such right from the remote. Cool bedside radio thing too. +Parking. The hotel is attached to a nice big parking deck, and there's plenty of access to the hotel from the deck, so we had plenty of parking, and were able to park quite close to our room. For central Durham this is a BIG plus. Parking is not free though, so watch out for that. There's Valet parking as well, though I'm not sure why since you're already in the garage by the time you get to the attendants. +Price. I booked the room a day before our stay as a surprise/spontaneous getaway and the prices are very reasonable for the location and accommodations. +Rooms. The rooms are big for what you're paying, and we had a nice view with our "city view" room, even from the second floor. Weird ~ ~The "check in" desk is just a table in the lounge area. It took us 10 minutes to figure this out. There's no signs and the people working there blend in to people drinking and working on their computers and such. There's no desk or computers, check in is through iPads. ~I'm not sure what the 'unscripted' part is, but some things were odd. For instance, I had to call and find out what time check out was, and it took them 5 minutes to figure it out. It wasn't written anywhere. Bad - -Noise. This hotel is targeted at fun, hip 20-somethings. There's an open-air pool in the middle of the hotel and they had a live DJ there Friday and Saturday night. Luckily our room was at the far end of the building, so we could hear the music clearly but a white noise machine was able to block most of it out. Probably fine for party-goers, but if you're looking for a quiet night's rest, this is probably not the place for you. ***Keep in mind the pool is open to the public, not just guests*** -In-room strobe. As others have mentioned, there's some kind of smoke detector in the room which flashes a strobe bright enough to read by every 12 seconds. Not exactly what people want when they are trying to sleep. -Wiring. Again as others mentioned the switch by the door controls both the bathroom lights and the nightstand closest to the door. -AC/Bedding. The AC works. Works very well. We stayed there the first weekend in August, and the sheets on the bed consisted of two thin cover sheets and a winter quilt. The only way to be comfortable without overheating was to run the AC very cold in the room, which was quite a shock compared to the 90+ temps outside. My wife and I ended up sleeping at home and just coming back to use the hotel as a base camp during the day. We simply couldn't sleep there. Not their fault = =The area around the hotel is under heavy construction. Entire buildings next door are being gutted and re-done. So you're bound to get some construction noise for the foreseeable future. Overall it certainly wasn't the worst place we've ever stayed at, and it was great as a base of operations when having a fun staycation in the city. I think once they get their feet under them and the place matures a bit it has a lot of potential. It certainly was unqiue! read more

This is only a review of the pool patio / bar. It's a great beautiful space, and can be a lot of fun, but lately I've been pretty disappointed. The bartender service is consistently subpar, bordering on downright rude. The waiters roaming the patio are always great, but the bar staff really drags everything down. They are dismissive, inattentive, and uncaring. I am also pretty disappointed in the new poolside policy. When the patio opened, anyone was allowed to sit by the pool if they bought food or alcohol. Now there is a $15 dollar charge to sit by the pool, even if you are spending more money. I spent over $30 at the pool on a Friday morning, and none of the pool seats were in use, but still I was told I would have to pay $15! At that point, I had more than demonstrated my willingness to hang out and spend money. This gives me pause, and creates a situation where next time Unscripted might not get my $15 or my $30! read more

My friend and I decided to visit unscripted for a drink. They had advertised their charcoal margarita on their Instagram so I really wanted to try it. The atmosphere was really nice. They bar area and things like that were very clean. The bartender who made our drink was very knowledgeable about the menu and she knew was in every drink. My friend ended up asking her could you taste the texture of the charcoal and she told us no! Which we could taste the texture and we didn't really like that. I also asked for no salt and she put salt on it which was no big deal. We ended up paying $10 for the drinks a piece. The bathroom is always very clean. The street parking can be a little iffy but they do have a parking deck. Tonight they were preparing for a event I am assuming they had a live dj setting up. Also, the staff made sure we were okay which I thought was cool. Overall great atmosphere, alright drink. read more

I really really want to support local businesses. Local businesses though can't be inept or have stupid cancellation policies during a PANDEMIC. I just got charged 97.00 for cancelling beyond their 4pm the day before. I was putting up an out of town guest at the Unscripted. That guest had to cancel their trip due to large snow storm in Chicago. I had to wait on hold forever to cancel and the front desk staff was horrible on several calls I had with them. This review is for the rooftop bar of the Unscripted Hotel. Arriving at the hotel, the vallet always reaches for the door so we may enter. We headed up to the 3rd floor and had a choice of outdoor seating. The waitress reviewed a list of drinks that weren't available for the evening. She was very friendly and informative. The architecture is art deco/modern. There is a little pool with lounge seating. There are various forms of seating. The views of Durham are pretty good. The menu is very limited though. They can do so much better. How about offering some dessert options? The food is okay but a bit over priced. In my experience, you will wait a while for the food to come out. read more

We stayed two days after the hotel had its Grand Opening. We stayed on the 2nd floor. Where do I begin? The plumbing from the upstairs room was loud and water going down the pipes was not to be missed. Doors on our floor were constantly opening and closing and it was like they were right next door every time. The bathroom lighting was tied into the entry way light switch. The only chair in the room was extremely uncomfortable making it tough to relax for any period of time. Lastly, there was not Hotel Welcome guide in the room for things to do locally, such as restaurants, shopping, parks, etc. I just believe there are too many better options in and around Raleigh/Durham. There was a dj there last nights got that was on point and the three of us found ourselves singing along and even facing a bit right there near the cozy couch that we had found to lounge on. Two of us had drinks-which were reasonably priced. The area was also festively decorated for the Christmas holiday. Even with Covid this was a great experience. Stayed here for a date night Saturday - Sunday. The staff was friendly and attentive. The hotel is beautiful. The pool was a great experience. We loved having a cocktail waiter and the dj was great. It was so fun. Will definitely stay here again. read more
