The girl behind the counter was quick - I was in and out in under five minutes. There was another man that came in while I was there, who spoke French - she was able to converse with him fluently. (I'm not sure if all the tellers can speak multiple languages, but I felt that this is something worth mentioning.) They don't have every currency in the world, but they have had any currency I have ever needed: GBP, yen, euro, etc. They also had Swiss francs on hand that my bank did not have. read more

They have to buzz you in. Otherwise, the door is locked. Omnex is a solid and trustworthy place to get your money exchanged, unlike some of the several other money exchange places in the immediate area. There is a $3 charge for any transaction under $300 - just remember that. You need you drivers license or a form of picture ID in order to transact. They also keep you in their computer system. Rates are always pretty solid and at the very least, competitive. Quick and easy transaction every time and they have most currencies available. read more

Quick and very good rates. Located just near the Empire State Building. As mentioned by other yelpers, it is tiny so you may miss it if you aren't paying attention. I think this is the same as OMN or Omnex Foreign Exchange group as it has the same address. Anyhows I called Travelex, Choice Forex, and a few other banks and this place had the best rate. The rate was about .03 off from the spot rate (alright fx traders, I know this is alarming but for retail prices it was pretty darn good!) while others were as high as .18 cents off the spot rate. They waived my transaction fee too (orig stated at $2) since I was exchanging $500 USD for Euro's. read more

Customer service at its worst. They are so rude, you better ask for a quote online so you don't have to deal with somebody who will hang up on you while you are speaking. I gave this place a 5 star review before and was thinking to go back but I have changed my mind, forever. Came here twice to exchange some USDs to GBPs. The storefront is pretty small and tucked away, so you'd definitely miss it if you're not paying attention. You have to be buzzed in at the door. The exchange rate is the best I've seen in NYC- just a few cents per dollar exchanged, and no other surcharges beyond that. Great rates. I bought gbp for 1.57 when it was trading at 1.52-3. No transaction fee. Bank of America was offering 1.61 w 7.50 FedEx fee. Other exchanges had 1.59 w $5-10 fee. As a small con, they take ID info and log it in the system. read more

Didn't think I'd ever be Yelping a ForEx place, but this one was pretty solid. Aside from having a super nice agent helping me out, the rate she gave me was incredible. I checked the Euro spot online before heading over (it was 1.36), and I was able to buy at 1.38. I've worked in banking, and there were days where I couldn't even get that tight a spread from the trading desk. It was odd that the CAD rate was so much less favorable (1.02 vs. 0.97 spot), but still very reasonable. Check Travelex's rates online and you'll see what I mean. And they don't charge any added commission! Not that I use exchanges that often, but I'll head back to this one if I even need to again. read more

Located on 33rd between 5th and 6th, it's a small little building that requires you to get buzzed in to get inside. Inside were two people behind bullet proof glass waiting your business. I dont know why I felt uneasy or as if I was engaging in some shady business, but I guess the atmosphere made it feel as such. I had Canadian money, Pesos from Mexico, and Philippine pesos that needed to be converted to U.S. dollars. I dont know if I got the best rate, as I failed to do my research, but the process was relatively easy and quick. read more

I don't know what the rates are like at other places but I think the raw exchange rate was 1.51 but hey, the store needs to make some money still. At least they don't have fees like the banks do. I called around and at the time this was the best. The rate for traders was $1.62 for a pound sterling. These guys charged $1.68 and a $3 fee. Maria B. you are definitely wrong. For 300L Sterling Travelex wanted $587, these guys charged $507. The Travelex is one block away, feel free to go ask. I'd estimate the total markup to be a little over 3%. I've come here a few times to exchange money - from pesos to euros to (most recently) Czech crowns, and back to USD after vacations. They are professional, quick and easy to work with. All you need to supply them is your drivers license, and whatever USD you're looking to exchange. I was also told to give them a 24 hrs heads up for some currencies, so that they can ensure they have the right amount to exchange for you. Place is a way better deal than Travelex. I just exchanged $40 for 470 Mexican pesos (actually $41.23 so the guy could give me the even 470). At Travelex I would've gotten about 454 pesos. In case you're interested the current rate as of 2/26/13 is 12.7941 MXN pesos for $1. I lost about $4 for the exchange fee but, eh, what can you do? I'm docking one star because I got there at 9am and the guy didn't come to open up until 9:05am, then took an additional 10 minutes to start up his computer and settle in. Not sure if this is a regular thing (it doesn't seem busy in the morning) or if I happened to come on a bad day, but I was hoping for a quick exchange before work. Oh boy am I glad I found this place. I am currently in process of relocating with work to London and had the need to exchange a large amount of dollars for pounds. With all the stress of the move I can honestly say that using Omnex took away the stress from the exchanging money process. I checked bank rates first and they were outrageous. The exchange rate for today was at 1.68, Bank of America was going to charge 1.78, Omnex was at 1.70. I literally saved $100 by just going to Omnex on the exchange rate alone, not to mention they charge no exchange fee, which the bank would have added on. Aside from that, the lady that helped me was very friendly and helpful. I was in and out in minutes. I needed to convert dollars to euros for an upcoming trip, so I went on Yelp to get quotes from a couple nearby spots: Uno and Best Value Currency (one avenue away). Best Value Currency responded to my message right away with a rate of $1.08 per euro. Uno never responded at all. But since Uno was closer to me, I decided to pop in there anyway and see what their price was. The woman at the counter quoted a rate of $1.09. I mentioned that a nearby place was offering a slightly lower rate of $1.08. Her response was, "Good for them." Indeed it was, because I walked out and took my cash over to Best Value Currency instead. The difference in rates wasn't even significant, but if you're going to be a jerk about it, I'm going to take my business elsewhere. By the way, the guy at Best Value Currency couldn't have been friendlier, and I got the rate of $1.08 he quoted via Yelp (cheaper than a bank, which probably goes without saying). Avoid Uno and their rude employees, and hit up Best Value Currency instead. read more

This was the best rate I found in the city. I have online banking so I'm not sure what the rates at major banks are. But I needed 300 euros and paid 333 dollars for it. Which came out to a $5-$6 difference than what the dollar to euro currently goes for. You also don't pay a fee for exchanges over $300. Definitely call ahead and check what the rate is before going in! read more

I just checked the spot rate on the $/Mex peso. It is 13.35 pesos to the dollar. I called them and asked what their rate was. She told me that it was 11.70 I said , "There must be some mistake". She hung up. I tried calling back, but no pickup ! This flies in the face of most of these reviews re a-great rates b- excellent customer service. I'd give it a zero ! p.s. Chase after all fees etc was 12.40. I will look some more, but not expecting much read more

THE BEST FX exchange in the city! This is my go-to spot for currency exchange. Rates are usually better than other exchange stores and most certainly better than the banks. Service fees are waived for any exchanges made more than $300 so to ensure you get the most bang for your buck, exchange a large sum as needed! Security is tight here-they'll need to buzz you in and out and the service is friendly.
