Conveniently located inside a gift shop right by Penn Station, this place consistently has the best rates in the city. I'm traveling to Australia and New Zealand next month and inquired with my bank, various Forex, International Currency Exchange, among others. None of those places could match A&S, who were basically giving me the market rate for Australian currency. The rate for New Zealand currency was also very competitive. On top of that, there were absolutely no fees! In addition, most of the other currency exchanges did not have enough of Australian and New Zealand dollars on hand, whereas A&S had plenty. I couldn't make it in time on the day I called for the quote, but came in the next day and the rate remained the same. The A&S place opens at 11AM and the worker arrived on time. They require showing ID and accept cash only. The person behind the window was meticulous with counting out the money. He was also knowledgeable about different methods of payment countries accept. As we continued the transaction, he became more friendly and welcoming, sharing about his experience visiting Australia many years ago. Coming here was a pleasant experience and I would definitely check this place first to exchange money for all my international travel! read more

This used to be the spot for exchanging dollars into euros or any other currency before travel but their exchange rate is no longer as good as it used to be and with most countries accepting credit cards it's no longer worth making an exchange in my opinion. read more

Travelex wanted to give me $430 for 400 British pounds. Chase wanted to give me $490. Another place's website offered way more than they were going to give me once I got to their location. If I told you that the best currency exchange rate in New York City is in an unassuming souvenir shop a few blocks from Penn Station, would you believe me? It's the truth. I've been coming to A&S Foreign Exchange since I was a teenager, and have yet to find a more competitive currency exchange in all of NYC. Any bank I've belonged to charges an exchange fee. Other exchange spots take a hefty cut. This place must do a solid volume of business to be able to keep rates this competitive...and I guess it also helps that the souvenir portion of this business seems to do well in it's own right. Pretty genius, if you think about it. Foreigners can get something to take home with them from the city and exchange any leftover US currency all in one shot before hopping on the nearby train to JFK. Service wise, these folks aren't friendly, but they get the job done. Last time I was there the person helping me was on speaker phone with a customer service of some sort, and continued his conversation while exchanging my dollars for euros. Planning to visit Japan soon and wanted to grab some Yen in advance to take advantage of the current strong US dollar to Japanese Yen forex rate. I made a few calls around manhattan trying to find the best rate with no fees and found that A&S had the best rate. The man behind the counter was courteous and our transaction went smoothly. So happy I found this spot. Their exchange rate was significantly higher than those in Manhattan when I was calling around. I appreciate that they don't have an exchange fee. They usually have the best rates, you can call around the day of to confirm they have the rate and quantity you are looking to exchange. They even have currencies that other exchange places did not have. They also do not charge you any fees. I'm not sure if they will if you exchange a small amount though. read more

Awesome rates for currency conversion. I went here a few days ago to convert Euros back to USD and I got 91% of the value of the Euro back. This was great considering that I was exchanging less than 100 Euros and the bank rate was around 0.85 when I originally went to them to get to Euros. You should know that only bills are exchanged here. No coins accepted. So minus one star for that. read more

Small currency exchange booth inside a tacky souvenir shop. The rate I got for EUR-USD was a little better than other exchanges in the city, about 7% worse than the Bloomberg rate. There were no other fees, so that 7% is actually 7%. The rate on their website was not accurate. I checked on the same day, both before and after I physically visited A&S. Good hours. Fast service. Exchanged Taiwan Dollar & Canadian Dollar on the same trip on Juneteenth. Kiosk is located inside a souvenir store, about a block from Penn Station. Canadian dollar was $1.32 to 1 USD and Taiwan dollar was $27 to 1 USD. Excellent exchange rate for Canadian dollar but less so for Taiwan dollar probably due to lower popularity. Easy transaction. Be careful - I think this place dupes you! Their site seems to give a good exchange rate, but the math doesn't add up. Take a look at my receipt - most places will multiply the foreign currency and the exchange rate, but this place divides instead. I was getting 390 Swiss Francs for 400 USD. I thought "Hmm that's weird but maybe I'm dumb so let me double check." Checked Google and Citibank after I left and seems like I'm duped (both says I'm supposed to get around 403 Swiss Francs for 400 USD). I'm very disappointed and will not come back. read more

Call to verify and depending how much you want to exchange. I mostly exchanged for Euros. He made only 2% versus bank that may charge 5% or more. This is most unassuming place imaginable -- it's a plexiglass booth in some kind of weird clothing and souvenir store. And yet, when I checked A&S' exchange rates against an exchange (a CXI booth) in a nearby Apple Bank -- which you would have assumed would be far more reputable, because of its neatness, the fact that it's in a bank lobby, and the fact that it's part of a chain -- A&S turned out to have substantially better exchange rates. Abraham seriously gave me the hook up when I needed to exchange for British pounds and Euros for our honeymoon. Call other currency exchanges in the city, and I promise you will NOT find another place that comes as responsible, or as close to A & S. I called about five other places, and there rates were well below the amount you'd expect. How can you go wrong with a place that has a "People love us on Yelp!" sticker on it? Abraham made it clear that if I came back to re-exchange my money back into USD, he would give me a comparable or better rate. He did say to only bring back bills, and that coins would be useless for people to buy; that made sense. Don't be fooled when you first walk in and think to yourself, "Why am I in a tourist shop?" Go right to the smiling man in the glass booth, and he will take care of it from there. He counts the bills multiple times, and even offers you to count it yourself to make sure there isn't any funny business. Did I feel safe exchanging over $3,000 in USD with this exchange? I did. Hahah this indian guy is funny. Walked into the shop and he's inside this tiny booth. I had some colombian pesos that has been in my back pocket for like 4months because every airport exchange has just been a total ripoff or doesnt take that currency. With the Euro slowly climbing up, being quoted with a spot rate of 1.14 per google, I was looking for a rate near that. Chase was offering 1.21, Travelex was 1.28. The old man behind the counter is a crook. He rounds the value to his favor without explanation until he is inquired about. Lame excuse of a combination of transaction fee and that he doesn't deal with coins. That's a poor excuse since many currencies deal with coins on rather high denominations. He was also rude to me. I greeted him w a 'good afternoon'. His response was a side eye and a head nod indicating to me to state my business. I tell him that i want to purchase some euros. He shouts: 'what about Euros?' That's when I knew this is not going to be pleasant. I came to this place bc of the high reviews it has received, but learned that even though overall the reviews are high, there are a fair amount of poor reviews. I called around and this place gave me the best rates. The market was trading at 1 euro for 1.06 usd and I got it for 1.10 per euro here. The man behind the counter was very friendly and even apologized for the wait. I came right after work so I already assumed there would be a wait since most people have the same idea. I actually felt bad for him because he said it has been so busy all day that he didn't eat yet! He then proceeded to tell a bit about his life story about how he's been doing the Forex business for 22 years and he can tell ethnicities apart and a few other random stories. Never again, A&S is truly A$S, I went there because it's 4.5 star reviews and close to where I live. This time yelp fails. The owner is so nasty and rude.. I wanted to do get some Baht for my Thailand trip. 2k Balt should be good. Some reviews said there was no fee which is misleading, there has to be service fee for them to make business, but I got charged for almost 18% Just for fees which is ridiculous. For USD to Baht is 1 to 35.5, so for 2k Baht should be $56.35. After I told him I wanted 2k Baht, he said it will be $66.71, seems to me it's a little steep,I opened my phone to double check the rate, he got really upset and aggressive, starting to lecture me that he had to pay a lot for currency to mail out from CA, kept going on saying" how much you think I am making huh?" I was desperate to get it done and get out, I said fine. I accepted the charge for $66.71. Coming next was the most NASTY DISGUSTING thing a business can ever do to a customer. He said "Let's round it up to $67". Then he manually changed the total to $67 on his computer, I was literally thinking to myself what the F? It's not OK even it's a dime, that's not the way to run your business. Before I decided to step out, I told him no need to wrap it up I got the exact change, he saw me digging in my purse getting the change, he said "fine just give me 66".. So gross that I swear will never ever go in there, I took the 2k Baht and stepped out, on my way back saw a currency exchange place within Apple Bank, out of curiously I went in there ask the lady how much is for 2k Baht including everything. There are a lot of foreign exchange services in midtown NY. It's impossible to call each one to check for rates. Thanks to Yelp, I'm spared this hassle! I need Euros and at A&S Foreign Exchange, I got a very good rate. As others have noted, this FX counter is located inside a small souvenir shop. Just walk along the 7th Avenue and cross the 30th street and you'll find the shop. Since I already called ahead to check for today's rate, I was prepared with my USD (cash only). I showed my ID and the fellow behind the glass counter gave me Euros with receipt indicating each denomination he gave me. It was very easy, fast, and professional. The workers at the shop were not intrusive and I did not feel nervous. I would come here again in the future for my FX needs. read more
