Actually the worst institution I have ever worked with. They have been nothing but a headache since I enrolled in 2023. Getting your classes registered is a royal pain. Their classes don't teach you anything either. I also have been trying to unenroll since mid 2024 and STILL am fighting with them now into April of 2025 to get unenrolled. UAT partnered with NSync Community Development Corporation (our non profit) for a week long STEAM camp for at-risk students grades 4th-9th. UAT generously provided residential housing and chef made meals for 12 students and 5 adults in our program during our camp week. Our students resided in a university campus dorms for the first time. They enjoyed the entire experience! What a great time our students, staff, volunteers, instructors and parents had!!! Thank you UAT for providing an awesome "college life" experience for our at-risk students. This was the spring board to a future in technology and the insight into college life for our young students. Thank you, UAT and sponsors for hosting 24 HR CODE DAY for youth. My son had a great time. The "Coding Pit" at the Commons was cool. It was so great to see so many young techies from 12 years to 25 years meet up to work on Coding Projects. The campus was small but designed beautiful to promote collaboration and teamwork. There were many areas with outlets and places where one could plug in and play or work. The cafeteria was modest in size but seemed to have adequate vending options and line food. I heard that if you were a student you might have access to free coffee. UAT seems to offer options to non-traditional college students who are interested in the gaming and tech industry. I will never recommend this school. My kid went to this school because it was an all tech school. Well, let me tell you. I'm proud of my son for getting double degrees. BS in Adv. Comp. Science and AS in Artificial Intelligence. When it graduation rolled around. Our families came out to celebrate his accomplishments. When we got our programs we notice that my son and a few other students were not on the program. When we called the school they apologized . Well, I spoke to someone at the front office and requested more than one program. I told them we had a lot of family come from out of town. No one went home with a program. They only sent five. I didnt noticed until now that they only have him with ONE degree not TWO. His name is under BS of Art. Intelligence not Adv. Comp. Science, and his not even under AS column. WTH! My husband and I have spent a lot of money on him and this school and this is what we get for all the hard work he put in.? I do have to say he had some great teachers thank God. But the whomever they had working on the programs should have someone proofread their work TWICE. He thought about going back for his masters but he may have to think about it...UAT GET YOUR OFFICES TOGETHER. read more

This is essentially an extremely expensive daycare for geeks. They make a big deal out of preparing students to be innovators. However, companies are looking for actual work skills, not just innovation. They make a big deal out of giving "scholarships". Turns out that they jack up the tuition price and then give everyone a "scholarship" though the recruiters tell you that hardly anyone gets one. WRONG! Our son attended for one semester. Started in network security. The majority of students drop out. They don't teach basic network security, they expect students to already know it. Very little help or support. They also say that unlike public universities they give personal attention. That's bullcrap. THEY DO NOT. This is a for-profit school with too few staff and they only offer courses that the teachers they happen to have can teach. All they care about is $$$. Didn't even have capacity for general ed classes. After we pulled our son out after a semester they charged us a penalty to move out of the dorm and kept our room deposit. After we made a stink, the Founder's Hall manager (also for-profit and a different corporation from UAT) said that she would see if she could get it waived. We never heard from her until she emailed us threatening to turn us over to collections. STAY FAR AWAY. Go to a good public university like ASU. This place is a scam. read more

I love the staff and faculty at UAT. They are crazy intelligent and helpful. I have worked here for several years and have found the people here to be fun, smart and caring. I don't know about the in person version of school but the online school is a nightmare. If you do miss an assignment then you are scorned. I realize in an online environment that you should be taking care of your own schoolwork schedule, however I don't recommend. I called them because my instructor failed to post a video of our second lecture of the week. After doing so I was told that I could catch up on my assignments if I message the teacher, which I did. I was told by the instructor that the video was ready and viewable. When I would click the link it would take me to "this video does not exist.". I told the instructor but he insisted everything worked fine. I tried different browsers and computers (not that a different computer would make a difference) but nothing worked and pop ups weren't blocked. So I called the new student advisor Brittany ( who I would not recommend talking to, unless you enjoy back handed compliments and immense amounts of passive aggressiveness) and she was kind enough to tell me, more or less, to stop complaining and just do the work ... "it's not that hard, for most people.". Statements like these are loaded in her repertoire of slams for people with questions. How dare a peasant ask her such questions!!!! Anyway because of some technical difficulties ( at a school that specializes in technologies mind you) and severely bad communication skills causing people to not want to even ask for help, I am giving this school a 1 star. I am just beginning my time at UAT but I have to disagree with Dennis E. UAT is stuck offering BA's in gaming design which is a tough market to get into but very popular with "Geeks". The programming courses seem very comprehensive and the atmosphere is designed for innovative thinking which is important in our rapidly evolving culture. I like the small intimate size of the school and feel comfortable there. The school is no more expensive than most on-line colleges. You get out of an education what you put into it. I expect to have a strong tool kit when I graduate and hope to make some very good friends along the way. read more

UAT in two words: "Geek Daycare" The unfortunate truth about this school is that it could have been great; however, the officers and upper managers have allowed their hubris and nepotism to drive out excellent staff/faculty members and alienate their alumni. Curriculum design is based on the marketing department's research on what's 'cool' in today's geek culture. Very little industry input, if any, is used to direct the curriculum. The software engineering degree can be obtained without having to take a database course, and only 2-3 programming classes are required. Policies are more like guidelines. They are upheld when it suites the school's agenda and overlooked when they are an inconvenience. The school currently has elected to require students to complete a "Student Innovation Project" over developing a portfolio. So, instead of being able to show potential employers that they have the needed base skills to do a job, they have a project to show that they can 'innovate' which few companies are interested in. Overpriced education. As of the Fall semester of 2009, UAT's tuition is over $9,000 a semester when the education received does not reflect the needs of the industry since the school seems to disregard valuable industry input. Therefore, the value of the degree when students graduate and try to get a job in their respective industry falls well below what the student pays for. The Provost of UAT would argue that students aren't just paying for an education but also paying for an experience. This confirms my opinion that UAT is a Geek Daycare where they substitute educational quality for student experiences. Expanding on the quality of education, and revisiting my comments about marketing's curriculum design and being able to get a degree in software engineering, the school shows no ability to provide any quality assurance on their curricula to ensure students are receiving the needed education for their respective industry. The only QA the school offers is their faculty instructors. There are few instructors I'd actually give an outstanding review of their ability to teach; however, I believe even those few become bogged down with overloaded course schedules and having to oversee upwards of seven courses in a semester. Going back to my point about quality assurance, these instructors are the first and last line of defense of what is taught. Entire degree programs get advertised before all the courses are developed leaving paying students to be beta testers in their experimental degree programs. The $9,000/semester + housing and other expenses for a poor education and "student experience" is not worth the years of debt students at UAT are accruing and the debt that I have accrued first-hand as an alumnus, the previous student body president and active student at UAT. Edit 6/2/2010 Some Reviewers have only begun their time at the school and seem to be regurgitating UAT marketing materials where as others have actually completed a degree, been involved with student activities, know the kinds of people the management are, and have even worked in the Student Life department. I would recommend current students reading this to go to a Student Government meeting and ask to read what some of the Alumni have to say about the school in the Alumni forums. There's a reason the school keeps the current student population and Alumni population segregated. Edit 12/13/2013 According to Indeed.com, a .Net senior developer makes about $126k/yr in NY, and according to CNN Money's cost of living calculator, $125k/yr in Manhattan NY is about $53k/yr in Phoenix AZ (for comparison). Then again, a 'six figure' salary is a rather vague amount of money. People who apply themselves will be successful regardless of what school they choose, so why not choose a school whose primary focus is student education and success rather than profitability? Any school is what you make it. I attended this school and got my degree in software engineering and followed that by attending Arizona State University master in engineering program. The level of rigor was the same. At UAT, I was able to start my own clubs and projects at UAT which included game engine design, robotics projects, and applied mathematic principles to computing that was engaging and challenging. It directly contributed to my current job for a fortune 50 enterprise software company. I agree that the alumni and career services center need improvement, however, many of the instructors work directly in industry and can get you an internship if you apply yourself. read more

This is where we have help PodCamp AZ in 2007, 2008 and upcoming 2009. What a great place. The programs they offer to students are top notch, the facility is expertly outfitted for anything and they really focus on having the latest tools for their students. All this makes our event extremely awesome. UAT gives us nearly the entire facility to put our event in and takes care of our every need. From computer usage, presentation machines, projectors and all of their rooms, to having their staff there 24/7 and available to our attendees and planners. My very smart whiz geek son was considering UAT and they do in fact put on a good show. Before you drop your $30k a year for this school here some data that is conveniently hard to find: - They admit almost 90% of their applicants so pretty much anybody with $$$ and a heartbeat gets in - Only 1 in 4 students graduate after 6 years!!!!!!! Yes that's a whopping 24% graduation rate! - They accepted my son without an SAT or ACT score, they did not even requisition his transcripts. I came here for a Good Faith Casting workshop and I liked the campus. The classroom were bright and in good condition. The staff working at the cafeteria was super nice and my fellow actors and I had a great lunch there. Parking was easy. I would attend a workshop there again. read more

This college is literally for the money. It over works teachers, giving them 7-8 classes to teach a semester, leaving you, the student, with less time, less of a lesson plan, and less of an education. They keep upping the price, but where is that money going? Teachers are paid about 60k a year, easily doubled if they are in their perspective jobs inside the game industry. They are also laying off people, and yet advertising in places that are ridiculous. Game Informer? Really? While I went, teachers seemed to come and go, and mostly the good ones. The ones you wanted to get experience from. Many of the alumni are not in the industry that they chose, and most are struggling to get any form of full time job. If you really want a full story, look up the Alumni Group on Facebook. There are plenty of people who will tell you that you can pick up any of the skills this school would teach you without going to the school. It is what you put into it, however, you have to put everything into this and then it's still not a guarantee. read more

Money Money - Just not apparently for employees. Large turnover, low staff morale. As a student, have had 3 different advisors in two years. Led to bad information, putting me in courses I didn't need, and delaying graduation.Then they don't offer the courses I need to graduate because there is no one to teach it. They are in it for the money, it is obvious that advisors and faculty are overworked. They try to tell you everything is fine but it isn't. Have had instructors leave in the middle of the semester or disappear during breaks. Two of my favorite instructors left and found out they went back to industry or elsewhere where in their words they were "appreciated". I see faculty in addition to teaching helping students move in to dorms or cooking - really? I would not recommend any college where staff is doing all this stuff - over utilized, underpaid not to mention the technology is not updated. I paid a lot of money to go here and have had - poor advising, bad instruction, and outdated technology. read more

VERY, Very costly mistake. One of the things that excited me the most was this promise that we were simulating the real environment of working on games. There are absolutely the opportunities but it comes from students who group up on their own and just do it. One of the things that enticed me the most about the school was the promise of great internships, a month before my second to last semester I asked where my internship figures in. They said as an online student we figured you'd have to much going on. I quit the school three months before graduation. I ran out of money, and realized that even with this degree it wouldn't matter. This school hadn't provided an educational background(prestige) or practical experience to help me get a job. The straw that broke the camel's back was a conversation I had involving my advisor and my teacher. I was questioning the point of objectives they wanted on our personal websites. This was the capstone. It was suppose to emulate what prospective employers would want to see. The issue was I had already started applying to these prospective employers and frankly the way the school had us presenting this wasn't anything recruiters wanted. Asking about this they told me they were aware and that most students when they were done just deleted them and made a new portfolio.... Which begs the question of why aren't you teaching me to prepare a portfolio that would actually be beneficial. read more

UAT is apparently too concerned about making as much money as it can that they only accept so many transfer credits which causes me to take courses on things that I'm already proficient in. Tell me, how does that benefit me in any way at all? The classes are way overpriced for the quality of education they provide. I may be getting good grades but that doesn't amount to anything if the education I'm receiving is garbage. With the way these classes are going, I'm better off teaching myself. read more

I'm in the process of getting my BA here. It is fantastic! Everyday there is something fun and new going on. The students are all very welcoming and I think of the faculty as no less than family. The classes can be a bit challenging and that what I think makes them valuable. However, I have never found the coursework to be over bearing. The professors are always willing to work with you if you are having trouble. The dorms are amazing. Resident life offers so many fun activities like; dodge ball, video game tournaments, movie nights, and more. There are also a ton of clubs to join. I am a member of Kendo, Fencing, Cooking, and Nerf Wars. These are such a blast. But if there aren't any clubs you like, you can always start your own, which is awesome. read more

UAT has gone above and beyond to assist my son this semester! Our son is on the Autism spectrum, he's 24 years old and has had many people tell him he would never accomplish much in life. UAT is a dream come true for him and us as parents. The professors are extremely helpful and understanding, and the student services department has truly gone out of their way to make sure our son is successful! They honor his accommodations without hesitation, and check in with him each week. Don't you just hate it when... Everything ends up being smoke and mirrors. Let me explain.... People need to stop writing reviews if they have never attended or have just visited, It's giving potential students the wrong idea. You will regret attending. This school's career services are a joke. The legit teachers on current projects do a better job of helping students with jobs after they graduate. The people are awesome, yes. Faculty and students alike. Great friends but the schooling and amount of relevant educational material is pathetic, no matter how hard you work at trying to be involved and a part of the school, the services and support UAT "provides" falls short of industry standards. This isn't a college it's like a second version of High School. Half of my friends transferred to other colleges, a handful (including myself) pushed through and stuck it out because we were too far in) and ALL of the people I know that have attended have regretted it. If they let the Alumni forums combine with the Incoming students, you'd see for yourself all the stories people are telling of their time here. They'd never do that though for fear of losing potential students. It's all smoke and mirrors and it kills me when I see kids walking in for that tour, "ooh look shiny things and video games!" That's great and all but it does not prepare you for your future. I wish I could get my money back, I'd even give back the degree if I had to...it's that bad and not worth the time here. Great place to hold a tech conference... like Podcamp AZ! They have been used for 4 years now, and they always come back for more. My husband also taught here in the University's beginnings and has always been impressed by it. It really seems like an advanced tech-school, and a good place to start if you want a specialized training. read more

My experience at UAT was as an online student. I was very surprised to learn about the restrictions placed on students. All students are not allowed to choose which courses they take--they are chosen and scheduled for them. Online students also take one course at a time, with three courses a semester. I started the semester being forced to take a class (professional skills development) that I believe was almost completely irrelevant since I had plenty of life experience going into this program. Unfortunately, there is no way around taking their pointless courses. I applied myself, and only missed one point in the whole class; it's not that I wasn't "into" it. I still felt that it was a huge waste of time and money. Due to the cost and uselessness of the undesired courses combined, I decided to withdraw. Although, I really wish I had read the withdrawal terms. Instead of charging based on the number of courses completed, they charge based on time, just like if I had been taking all three courses at once. So instead of paying $2000 for one class, I am paying over $4000 for a class that was a COMPLETE waste. Please, don't make the same mistake as me. Attend another university, and make sure they don't have foolish restrictions like UAT's. read more

Don't be surprised when you do your work, turn it in and submit it, and it disappear and you get 0's for lots of work. Happens in multiple classes with all the UAT wannabe "professors". That's just one of the many BS problems and things they cause or make worse; the only time they try to make the student feel better is if their ass is on the line, which they go out of their way to protect, and damn the students. The "University" of "Advancing Technology" is just a business out to make as much money as possible. It's shown many times education is a secondary, or even third or fourth concern, if at all. Students with problems and in need of assistance get ignored, forgotten about, or swept under the rug, way too often here. read more

Curriculums for classes are often written mere weeks before the courses begin. This semester, however, 4 of my 6 classes still do not have a curriculum written, even though classes start next week. Apparently, the teachers will be writing it as they go. This does not help me to study, plan, or prepare for classes. Nor does it allow the teachers the time to edit or evaluate their lectures and assignments before they are given. How good the curriculum and the course is depends entirely on the quality of the professor teaching it. Sadly, many of the professors are burned out and actively looking for new jobs. At least one professor quit last minute, dumping all of his classes on professors that already had very full schedules. And yet... UAT refuses to hire new professors to take up the work load. Lay-offs and cut-backs have been the norm this year (2012). This doesn't fit with the money that is wasted on marketing and the "pretty" and "new" hardware that doesn't actually get used. Also, one would assume that since so much depends on the teachers, the teachers would be qualified, right? Wrong. While some of the professors are very good at what they do, others are all talk with little to no industry experience plus no teaching degree. Why are they even teaching at all? At least the school is know for it's wonderful environment. Right? Except, the current environment is often down right hostile and unpleasant. Professors have no problem belittling students, calling them out in public, or gossiping about each other. This low maturity level and negativity is passed on to the students, who often attack each other on the school forums, yet the moderators join right in and never lock the threads or stop the attacks. There are definitely some great classes, great students, and great professors despite it all. But be warned... the school IS LYING TO INCOMING STUDENTS when they take a tour of the school. You will, most likely, be told that UAT has the "dev kits" to make Playstation and XBOX games. Don't be fooled. UAT does have a developer's XBOX console and a developer's PS3 console, but they have not paid for the software!!! (In other words, the consoles cannot test your games, or help you to release them.) If you are told, "we have the dev kits for XBOX and PS3" ask to see them in action. Ask your tour guide to load the software, so you can see it. The guide will (most likely) have no idea what you are talking about, as students are not being trained for the PROFESSIONAL game industry. Most are only learning how to make small indie games. Read the 5 star comments. You will see these are not being made by students or alumni. They are mostly being made by business people who visit the campus in order to use it's facilities. It's not hard to get 5 stars from a company that just enjoyed free access to the building. Sorry, but all they know about the programs is what's found in the brochure. read more

This school thinks my education is a joke. They have my money and they do not care about anything after that... And I was dumb enough to follow through hoping it would get better. First and foremost, the school is considerably over priced. I'm attending as an Online Student or "Distance Learner" under the Software Engineering Degree Program. As an Online Student I paid UAT close to $18,000 last year. This is including 2 payments of $150 towards their newest scam, The Synchronic Resource, which is a MANDATORY program where UAT provides you with all your books each semester. While it sounds like a great program, you have to pay the full amount every semester, whether you use $200 for books or $0 dollars. Since they have begun this program they have spent $250 on my books for me, while I've been charge for $450. There is no refunds or credits, and if there are they are keeping that information to themselves. But that's just the beginning of the scam. These books they send you are RENTALS. You do not get to keep these books, and if you want to, you have to pay the Rental company they use an additional charge. The worst part is that more then half the time, these books don't even reach the students in time for their classes. I have been in numerous classes where students are without their books the entire first week, sometimes more, and these are only 5 week Online courses... Career Services department might as well not exist. From what I can tell there are 2 contact members for the CS department who divide the entire student body between them. During the process of trying to get my Internship requirement kicked off, I almost missed my window because it was taking 2-3 weeks for my Career Services Representative to contact either me or my Internship Sponsor. It was completely embarrassing to say the least... The Senior Innovation Project is completely unsupported. When I started I was informed I was going to be taking 4 classes that would focus on developing my project throughout my time with UAT, culminating in an "innovative" project to be presented to a committee consisting of experts in my Degree Program to determine my eligibility to graduate. I have been at UAT for 4 years now, with less then 10 months remaining in my degree program. I have taken 1 of the promised Senior Innovation Project courses, while 2 of the others have been removed from the program, leaving me with one remaining course that I am still not scheduled for... On top of that, I have received no help, guidance or anything regarding this project. I have contacted the school's "Student Success" team with questions regarding the project as I desperately try to complete some of it between my full time job and my other demanding classes, but have received little to no information. At this point I'm not sure if I'll be able to complete this project, and if I do, will it even be up to standards of the "committee"? The Professors are essentially hit or miss. I've had wonderful experiences with some, while others I've actually felt it necessary to report them to administration (not that anything is being done about them I'm sure), but I'm sure this is probably the case for just about any university. I'm currently enrolled in a class where the material is not even completed, and this is not the first time I've been dropped into a class that had not undergone some kind of QA. The instructors are typically given little to no control over the shells they are assigned to teach, which to me simply places them in the role of baby sitter and grading robot. What is the purpose of having "industry experts" as professors if they aren't given the opportunity to build their own classes? My biggest concern now is that when (or if) I graduate and receive my degree, with potential employers recognize this school and simply laugh me out of the office? I've put all of my effort into this degree and I'm sitting with an honorable 3.95gpa that I'm incredibly proud of. I take my work seriously, but I don't think that UAT does the same. My son and I have been so impressed with the staff at UAT that we sent them letters telling them so. We appreciated the warm welcome, well-coordinated incoming events, personable staff and flexibility for students. The communications throughout the year have been great as a parent back here in Minnesota. The logical response to the unprecedented demands for Covid19 included thoughtful adjustments for the residence hall, school operations and courses. My son received support and accommodations for ADHD, anxiety and depression. Ashley in Student Services has been an incredible support and advocate for him. We were able to meet with her together and I was immediately grateful that she was so knowledgeable and warm. I knew he would be lucky to have her as a support. Ashley is enthusiastic and genuinely interested in students. She makes a point to reach out to them and visit the Commons as well. Although my son has been an excellent student in the past, he struggled with the new responsibility of creating his own schedule. Being overwhelmed and anxious led him to fall behind significantly. Ashley supported him, brainstormed options and coordinated schedule adjustments. Teachers provided accommodations on an ongoing basis. I recognize the understanding and time this degree of extra coordination requires. They deserve recognition also. My son and I both felt that what he has learned at UAT, both in and out of classes, was even greater since he developed skills through these struggles. I am a Robotics and Embedded Systems student and from my experience in my major I think the school is awesome! My professor is very knowledgeable and one of the best professors I have ever had because he really wants his students to succeed. He does everything he can to help us when we need it. There are a couple of things that, as I have gone through the program, I would consider changing but overall I feel like I've had a really great experience at UAT. The fact that the school hires professors who have lots of experience working in the field which is very beneficial. Another plus is that students are encouraged, through their classes, to work on projects so that they acquire hands on experience and have something to show and prove that they have done the work. However, no school is perfect but one thing that has impressed me about the school is that while I have been here the faculty and staff have always been willing to help and listen to students. In my case, any issue that I have had was resolved after speaking with staff who were willing to help fix the situation. That is something I do appreciate. I would recommend this school to others who are really interested in technology. read more
