That is when after much research I choose Chandler Preparatory Academy for my children to attend both middle school and high school. We have been a CPA family for over 4 years. Both children transitioned very well from public school to the Great Hearts culture. It only took about a week for them to get used to the uniforms! I feel that the stricter dress code and restrictions on personal electronics help my children to focus in the classroom and develop better relationships with their teachers and peers. Both children quickly found very positive and encouraging friend groups. We have had no issues with bulling or harassment. Attending CPA through COVID was a godsend as the entire Great Hearts operation was dedicated to getting children safely back into the classroom. Where last year my children were able to attend school in person for 90% of the school year, my neighborhood high school was online for three quarters. I am very satisfied on how CPA mitigated COVID and continues to provide in person education in a post pandemic world. I find the student body to be diverse and vibrant with students from all different backgrounds. There is a high participation of parent involvement. School pride is evident by the cleanliness and orderly nature of the school grounds. Teachers are highly assessable to both students and parents. Each teacher/class offers weekly tutoring hours. Students also have time after lunch to study, attend tutoring, or get some fresh air on the field. There is a robust mentoring program for new students as well as student lead tutoring programs for math and science above what the teachers offer. My children have very different learning styles where school comes easy for one while the other struggles. Through the CPA ESS program, my youngest gets additional support that helps her be successful with the more rigorous curriculum. I do feel that she would have "gotten lost in the shuffle" at Kyrene Middle School but at CPA she gets the support and encouragement she needs to make learning a positive experience. This school focuses on a classical liberal arts curriculum that not only cultivates the hearts and minds of students in the pursuit of Truth, Beauty and Goodness, but also graduates student leaders that are prepared for success at the college level. The school produces a very well rounded student and encourages, through CPA programs, to participate in athletics, music, art, mentorship, and community service. The Great Hearts school system offers transparency on their budgets, fundraising, and operations, which goes to show that the school motto of Truth, Beauty, and Goodness starts at the very top of the organization. Scholars is the name that the teachers call the students at Heritage Academy by. I will give you all the reasons why this year was terrible and will not use their writing style (CRED's)* Creds stands for Claim, Reason, Evidence, Discussion, and teachers will use Harvard Keyword Outlines alongside it because this is a review and I'm lazy. Remember that this is completely biased and won't be everyone's experience at this school. And also take into account that this is for the Mesa campus, as it is very tiny and squished. Also, I will not be using my real name for my own safety (this is not my direct account). I would like to talk about the staff and "scholars", both the good and the bad, and the beliefs pushed onto "scholars" by sending your child here. I would like to start with the fact that many of the staff and "scholars" are Mormon (LDS) and your child will have this influence if you send your child here. (I'm not trying to say it's bad or anything I'm just an Ex and I prefer not to hear about it) staff will not hesitate to say where they were married in one of their temples, but often doesn't go beyond it. But some do mention church on other occasions. Also, "scholars" tend to be homophobic/ transphobic and that may affect your child. Although some staff will go easy on you when in class, some are hardcore (I will not name anyone for their privacy). Overall the staff also will push patriotic beliefs on "scholars" and is a highly christian based school. For your information and child safety, teachers also can use "scholar" bathrooms. Although there have been no incidents that I have heard of, once there was a teacher watching corn (adults know what I mean) and accidently broadcasted it to that class by accident. The teacher was fired luckly, but thought I'd mention that. Also, that was not my experience for some context and happened in the previous school year. That concludes the staff/ "scholar background paragraph. There have been incidents of sexual harassment by some of the more tiresome "scholars", and then continue to say that what you said wasn't scholarly, (the experience of sexual harassment was not mine and the students that harrassed the other one were thankfully suspended). The principal*, when I said I would like this (person they were interviewing) should replace my teacher because the person being interviewed was better at teaching the subject, slapped me (gently) on the arm, which made me EXTREMELY uncomfortable (she likely did because she thought I was joking) *This Person will no longer be principal for the 2026-2027 school year* A similar experience happened when I made a dark poem and wrote it on my assignment to get myself to stop laughing during class when she wanted us to shut up. About a week later, she talked to me publicly about it (before class when everyone was talking) and touched my arm out of concern- which made me very uncomfortable, even if she was concerned about me. In general, most of the staff make me uncomfortable just by sitting in a room with them. Now, about the rules and standards of this school. That dress code is one of the most strict I have seen.(I haven't been to many schools, but I have heard of similar schools having less strict dress codes that I will not be naming). As I have almost been dress coded on a "Dollars 4 Duds"* day Dollars for Duds is a day scheduled by Heritage where you can bring cash in exchange for wearing normal clothes- with a strict dress code 'but at least its something' now continuing what I was attempting to say for a semi- cropped top that you could see some of my stomach when lifting up my arms, and it wasn't noticed towards late in the day. I also couldn't wear anything over 4 inches above the knee, which was a huge challenge for me, even if my clothes are pretty modest (other than the crop top). Which is why I kind of think its a scam to look normal at this school. Also on the "no profanity" rule, teachers either don't blink an eye (except for some) or have terrible hearing because I have never seen someone get a Log Entry for swearing. PDA is also challenging to deal with, as you can't hug, kiss, or really do anything.Now to the English program, that is tedious. The English program at this school is extremely advanced and will constantly have you on your toes with CRED's and Harvard Keyword Outlines, SO's Sentence Openers, SV's Strong Verbs, which are all DU's Dress Ups which are only stressful once it's implemented. Now these Rules and standards are incredibly challenging to deal with. Except for swearing because of reason stated - which is incredibly hilarious. Now for the random things I have complaints about. I did not have any issues while my son attended k-4th; however, once he entered 5th grade everything went downhill! Bullying is a major issue at this school. My son was continuously bullied and nothing was done until my son took matters into his own hands. He had to start protecting himself and fight back. He was literally drop kicked onto his tail bone. The student was at school the very next day with no consequences. Other incidents occurred with other students when finally my son had enough and fought back. I was contacted that he hit a student with his binder in the head after the other student knocked items out of his hand and attempted to steal his book that he purchased from the book fair. Also, while this was going on with my son, my daughter entered kinder here! She was repeatedly punched on a daily basis from the same student. Paula, the principal, tried to tell me the majority of the children do not know how to interact with other children and in a classroom setting. I understand that; however, this happened on a daily basis and nothing was done to the student. I was also told that my daughter, in kinder at this time, was falling behind. My daughter was reading before she even started at this school! Thankfully I was able to move her to another school where she is succeeding now and was tested for gifted classes. Now, what does this say about the teachers here? The moment I move my child and she is succeeding! Her reading level is three grade levels above her grade level. I highly recommend looking into an alternative school if possible. I was lucky enough to be able to move my children.

It's smaller than most libraries I've been to, but it's a great place to go on early weekday hours and on Saturdays. During the week, though, it can get pretty wild with students filling the library to study. It makes me wonder why library hours aren't longer especially until 7 or 8 p.m. on weekdays and at least 5 p.m. on weekends. Libraries had longer hours before COVID, and I really think they should consider bringing them back. Some students simply don't have anywhere else quiet to go and study. I also wish more study rooms were available to reserve throughout the day instead of only having a couple available for booking. And can we please get some soundproof study pods? I had a woman next to me talking VERY loudly on her phone. I eventually had to knock on the wall and respectfully ask her to lower her voice. To be fair, she probably didn't realize how much everyone could hear but I was honestly shocked the space wasn't better soundproofed! Overall, I'm happy I found this library. It's a great community resource, and with longer hours, more study rooms, and some soundproof spaces, it could be even better.

Compared to other schools we've been at (a mix of private and public), SJB feels so much more like a community. In a perfect world I would love for my kids to have an old fashioned school experience - riding their bikes to school with all the neighborhood kids, everyone knowing everyone. But living in deep Ahwatukee, far from walking distance to any school, and in a neighborhood where kids go to at least 5 different public/charter/private elementary schools, that just wasn't going to happen. But the way SJB operates, it feels like the next best thing. If you're considering SJB, my best advice is to take a tour during the school day. Bonus if you can be there to witness a pickup/drop off, when all the parents and students are chatting and catching up in the courtyard like one big family. Once the school day starts you'll see such respectful kids and caring teachers working together in the classrooms as well as in the outdoor spaces. The academic standards are high, but the vibe is warm and welcoming. And because it's on the smaller side (50 kids per grade, max), the staff is able to work with students individually as needed, something that has been a huge benefit for my family. I'm so happy to have found the right school for us, especially knowing that my kids can thrive there all the way through 8th grade!

They are rising up. I don't hear many good things on the principal & to tell you the truth she might want to change careers. BUT the assistant principal, Ms. Chapman, does make up for the principals lacking. She is prompt & courteous. And I thought for a long time she was the principal as she is so involved. Is it true? Not sure. Anyways, one thing this school does & I LOvE them for it is play the national anthem every morning! Though many parents don't speak English they are very involved. All school concerts are always a hit. Family orientated for sure. The front office girls deserve an award. All indoor campus is also nice. Again, those front office rock stars, such as Grace, are the gatekeepers at the front of the school & protect our babies as they monitor who enters the building.
