This Asian family-owned Alterations and Dry Cleaning business is one of Roanoke's best kept secret…read more I discovered it a while ago, and it was not by chance. Needing to have some alterations done to a new suit I had just bought to attend a special event, I visited several alterations and dry cleaning businesses that I knew about because of their central location and expensive advertising to get their name out there. All of them charged exuberant amount of money to have what I needed done, as well as having to outsource the job, and taking much too long to have it done. Then, all of a sudden, I remembered a little place I once saw as I was driving by the Colonial Office Center. It was located in one of three small businesses at the end of the parking lot to this Office Center. And I thought to myself: "Sometimes amazing things come in small packages." So I decided to travel on the road less traveled, in this case beyond the parking lot, and to this small building that housed the Sun's Alterations & Dry Cleaning business. This is where I met a very kind and hospitable lady who's main concern was solving my problem of getting my new suit tailored and ironed on time to attend my special event. Since all their alterations are done on the premises by a professional tailor with 26 years of experience, she told me it could be done and quoted me a very reasonable price. Who would ever have imagined that in this humble, little store, hidden behind a large Office building, I found the solution to my problem provided by a wonderful and warm Korean family-owned business. Since then I have always gone there for all my alterations and dry cleaning needs, and recommend the place to family and friends. Today, when I visited the place to take some photographs to accompany this review, I had the privilege to also meet the husband of the family and their older son, and to personally thank them for the great contribution that they are making to the community of the Star City of Roanoke, Virginia. I highly recommend this small business for all your alterations and dry cleaning needs, and urge you to support this wonderful family by giving them your business and friendship.

My wife and I decided to take a cherished, 35+ year old Petit Point wool and silk decorative pillow cover in for cleaning. It had 3-4 small mice or stink bug stains, which we discovered after a cross country move. In dropping this off at Augusta, I specifically inquired how the cover would be cleaned. The clerk checked with the owner, who said he would do a gentle soak/wash with a Dawn-type cleaning product (in spite of the pillow cover manufacturer directions of "dry clean only"). In lieu of this and for whatever reason, he elected to use oxygenated bleach. This transformed the pillow from crisp and precision needlework of varying shades of rich and vibrant blues, golds, reds on a creme ground, to the bleached, faded and washed-out mess as shown in my pictures. At no time did we received a call from the cleaners to inform us of the mishap nor did he flag our article that he should be notified when the customer picked up. I discovered the issue when when picking it up. After paying $10 for it's cleaning, I took the pillow off the hanger to look at it more closely as I thought they had inadvertently hung it inside out; I was dumbfounded the pillow was completely faded/bleached and ruined. I asked the clerk what happened and she simply said "sometimes things fade". It was at this point I requested to see the person responsible for the damage. From the back, the owner appears, all smiles and acting as if we were old friends. I questioned the state of our pillow, why this occurred and what solution he could offer. This guy quickly began to spin things, becoming argumentative and insulting. Each time I asked or stated something, he would reply with increasingly smart-aleck responses including "had you cared for it as you should have, this wouldn't have happened", "no one will know what it looked like before if you just put it on a sofa with other pillows", "you obviously don't care that much about the pillow since it took you took 10 weeks to pick it up", and other hard to believe remarks. Not once was there an apology, an offer to reimburse me for the cost of the cover (Ebay shows similar ones from $178 to $240+) and I actually had to ask for a refund of my cleaning cost. I couldn't believe anyone, let alone a business owner, would even consider handling a situation as he did. I decided to stop the dialog and told him I would never do business with him again. He said losing a pillow cover customer wouldn't impact things too much and then asked if I had ever been there before. I replied that he has done all our cleaning and my shirts for a few years and then told him to f**k off and went out the door. I suspect this little twerp had his clock regularly cleaned throughout his school years and into adulthood due to his desperate void of interpersonal skills, common sense and couth. Be very careful in taking any irreplaceable items to Augusta Cleaners, they are not accountable and certainly do not stand behind their work.

I left believing that the way a…read morebusiness treats a customer when something goes wrong tells you considerably more than how it treats one when everything goes right. My concern with Amherst Dry Cleaners ultimately became less about their intake procedure and much more about how ownership responds when a customer raises a concern. I brought 11 pieces--suits, dresses and jackets--to the Amherst location. Although the clerk was initially pleasant, I was surprised that my garments were neither inspected nor itemized in my presence. The description area on my form was left blank, and I received only a numbered ticket. I was told the garments would be tagged and documented later in the back. After leaving, I became uncomfortable having 11 garments in someone else's possession without documentation of what I had left, so I returned. I simply asked that we confirm the number of pieces. We counted 11. I wrote "11 pieces" on my ticket and initialed it, then asked the clerk to initial it as well. She was hesitant to do so but complied after telling me that this was "a bit too much" and I was being "unreasonable" because no one had ever requested this before. Rather than post a negative review, I contacted the owners privately and gave them an opportunity to address my experience. A few days later, co-owner Julie Mays called with a very aggressive tone. She confirmed their policy of itemizing garments later and I explained that while I might disagree with that policy, my complaint was primarily about being called unreasonable for wanting acknowledgment of the number of garments I had entrusted to them. Instead of simply addressing that concern, Ms. Mays became defensive. She told me the clerk was a "pillar in the community" and a minister's wife, said I was the first person to complain about this, suggested I use one of their other locations, and at one point told me to "calm down." I was calm. I repeatedly explained that I was not questioning the clerk's character; I was addressing how I had been treated as a customer. Within minutes of that conversation ending, co-owner Andrew Mays called and informed me that they would not clean my garments and thought it best that I go elsewhere. I specifically asked whether they were declining to serve me simply because I had complained about my experience. He reiterated that I should go elsewhere "due to the situation" and they would not be serving me. Arrangements were made for me to retrieve my garments from another location. Let me be clear...I never asked for a refund, discount or special treatment. I asked for my garments to be counted and later asked ownership to address how I was spoken to. Prospective customers considering Amherst Dry Cleaners should read not only the reviews, but also management's responses to critical reviews. I believe those responses provide valuable insight into how customer concerns may be handled. I fully expect the owner may respond aggressively and defensively to this review as well. I will simply stand by this factual account of my experience and allow readers to reach their own conclusions.

I went to pick it up on Saturday morning as scheduled. When I looked at the suit, I noticed the jacket had a crease pressed into the lapel, and as you will see in the pictures, there were other areas that look like they had just been missed in the pressing. I spoke with Julie who with her husband Andy are the owners. My family was scheduled to go out of town on Monday. Julie recognized that the jacket needed to be repressed and said that her husband Andy must not have inspected it when it was pressed. Julie said that they could get it re-pressed and either delivered to me by noon on Monday or I could pick it up from the store Monday morning by noon. She said that they would make it right. I felt that Julie was trying to do the right thing and mistakes happen. about an hour later, I got a call from Andy, her husband, who said that there was nothing wrong with the jacket, that he had pressed it himself, and that Julie, and two other customers said there was nothing wrong with the jacket. (Why other customers would be sharing their opinions is not clear to me. I think the pictures speak for themselves.). Andy also said that he couldn't get it re-pressed by Monday morning. He told me I either needed to pick up the jacket by noon on Saturday or that they would be open at eight on Monday and I could pick it up then. He said they would refund my money, but that they would not fix the problem. I told him I was not happy but he wasn't giving me any choice. I drove back on Saturday to get the jacket which ruined my planned Saturday morning breakfast with my son and family. On the way, I called Julie, told her I was coming back for the jacket, she said she had refunded the payment. I expressed to her that what really hurt was that her husband who had never seen the jacket said there was no problem when both she and I had seen the jacket and she had acknowledged there was a problem. When I got back to the store I told Julie that my breakfast with my son had been ruined. Her whole attitude had changed. She said she didn't want to hear it, what I had said was inappropriate and to get out of the store.
