(This is for client services, not the school's training program.) NO supervision over student work. At most student clinics- from high end salons to dental schools- the students are highly supervised and their work is checked, and double checked. Mostly to evaluate their work but also to make sure it's appropriate. This is why, while inexpensive, an appt is longer than in private practice. Not here. This clinic literally trains student and unleashes them on the public without ever checking their work in real time. How are they assessing the quality? They rely on what students report to the instructors apparently. If you just want a "facial" with some nice smelling masks and quiet time by all means go here. But I can do that at home- with better products. I was shocked when my student omitted whole components of the facial because she said I "didn't need it." At no time did an instructor actually LOOK at my skin, talk to me, or review her work. I called the school later and asked for an instructor. She asked me to come in to see my skin herself. As it turns out I was right and the instructor herself had to perform services the student omitted for reasons that are still baffling. While I appreciate this, I shouldn't have to do this. When I mentioned this to Maria who answers the phones she kept saying "they are students." EXACTLY. They can't learn or perform proper service without more oversight. That's not training. That's just logging hours. read more

I had a concern about breakouts due to maskne and she addressed them and suggested a product for me to use. The toner pads she suggested works great and no more breakouts. The staff are really great, love the products and relaxing atmosphere, but my student technician, Ashley, was very slow in getting the products for my facial and then rushed to get it done. I took my 12 year old daughter for a facial because she has a few blackheads that needed to be removed. Unfortunately, the esthetician said that she could only remove one and that the others weren't ready to come out. I am not sure what that means. My expectation was that all four of them would be removed. My daughter and I left disappointed. I have been coming to this school since they were in a basement on Cass Ave and have always had a great experience. After last night that changed, the front desk guy was chatting on his cell phone while checking me in, while i was trying to ask questions. He wasn't paying attention at all, the esthetician was fantastic, still learning ofcourse but the linens were filthy! the towels they used smelled awful, i know everyone is so busy bc of covid but no excuse for cleanliness especially at a school and especially during covid. Definitely not it's best effort of the school as I am a long time customer. lastly the front desk guy has his mask hanging from one ear and wasn't even wearing it... waste of a mask and definitely not the way it should be worn. read more

This is for the client services, not the training program. Can you get decent, even excellent service here at very low cost? It depends. IF you get a good student, yes, if not, well, you get what you pay for. The aesthetician that did my green tea facial didn't do extractions which are supposed to be included- and are a standard part of any good facial. Otherwise it's mostly nice smelling masks and scrubs that with all due- I can do at home. She said I "didn't need it." I did. While I should have asked for an instructor, I shouldn't have to. I learned later they are trained NOT to do extractions on older skin like mine. Any skilled aesthetician however can do extractions on ANY type of skin. This brought up a different issue:  where is the supervision? At no time did an instructor review my skin or her resulting work. It's baffling to me how they are assessing student work without even looking at it. This is true of all my visits there. I've gone to several training schools for services locally and in Chicago (from dental schools to high end salons) and ALL of the students have supervisors overseeing their work and final product. They are not unleashed on the public and allowed to report back what they've done. read more

Been going here for a few years. I usually get a massage and it's pretty good. It all depends on which student you have, really. I'd say 80% of my massages were spot on, the others could use some improvement, but that's what the feedback form is for (constructive feedback for improvement as they learn). You're in kind of an open room with curtain dividers for the massages, so sometimes you can hear the person on the table next to you/in the room. It's usually not an issue. The calming music is really relaxing and overhead heating/cooling system provide white noise that I enjoy. The tables are comfortable and are heated. There's a bin under the table for your belongings. Prices are really reasonable, and you should tip the students. They're learning, but also performing a service. read more

Students are learning how to create a spa experience; however, they are ready to use gentle techniques and different products before working on clients. We quickly made our appointments on the phone and received reminder texts or necessary information to be ready for treatment. The treatment room is aromatic with low lighting and zen-like music. The products used are the same products offered in high-end spas and sometimes even better. They will consult if you have questions, explain the process, and recommend products to correct or maintain healthy skin. The best part of the experience is to receive these services under the supervision of instructors for a fraction of the price you would pay if it weren't a training spa. This place is a hidden gem!! I go at least monthly for facials. They are typically $30, but join their email list and they always send out specials for $10 off or half price facials! More often than not I have great students, but every now and then I have had a girl that doesn't seem cut out for it or is a smoker! I don't want someone who smokes and I can smell it on their hands, touching my face! Luckily it's only happened twice and I have made it a point to request other students and they are always very accommodating! The massages here are also fantastic and you can't beat the price at $35! They also offer airbrush tanning, which I have had done once and was happy with! The atmosphere is really relaxing and they use great products, mostly dermalogica. I seriously can't say enough good things about this school. I've been in the esthetics program for a week now and absolutely love it. Now the thought of attending another school (ya know the ones that call you so much you have to actually tell them to stop).. makes me cringe. And Universal offers so much more than any other school, ie. laser certification. The teachers are top notch; they actually care about their students and it makes the whole experience so fun and enjoyable. I wake up every day so excited to come here. The spa... awesome value. Here you have students who are trying to do every service perfectly and impress you. This at discount prices.. um, phenomenal deal for spa services! RUN AWAY FROM ANY WAXING THERE!!!!! I only had waxing done - lip, brows and supposed to get a brazilian BUT we didn't get to that..... Started with my lip - she spent about 30 mins and I swear, every hair was still there. She was even plucking them???? And when she was done, still hairy and my upper lip was all beat up? I don't even know how someone accomplishes this when it is supposed to be one side waxed, pull - the other side waxed, pull and then maybe some touch-ups. But that's not the worst.... My brows - it took over an hour and she took a CHUNK OUT OF MY EYE BROWS! I was missing a piece like a rapper who shaves cuts in his brows. I was MORTIFIED and DEVASTATED!!! Like legit wanted to cry. Needless to say, I ran out of there after my eyes brows and also at this point I think I had been for close to 2 hours now with the wait time prior to getting started. There was no way in hell I was letting her attempt waxing my nether regions. RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN! read more

I starting going to Universal Spa about 10-11 years ago. I moved away for a while but moved back and wanted to start going there again. I had a facial in Thursday and it was great. I've had very good experiences until yesterday, when I had a massage. The massage therapist was horrible and I felt like she just wanted to finish and go home. She never massaged my shoulders and when I asked, she replied that she started with my shoulders when she actually started with my shoulder blades!! She did very little to my hands and basically rub a little lotion on my feet. HORRIBLE! I'm well aware it's a school but I would never have paid a regular massage price for something that a 10 year could have don't better. read more

I have had serveral services done at this cute training Spa. I love going here because all the techs are students and need hours to get credits to graduate. I love getting waxes done here, the girls are always gentle and I've never had a problem with the wax that they use. I have had many facials as well here and I have loved everyone of them. I did't get them 5 stars because the nail service takes a very long time. If you are getting a pedicure and manicure you can be there up to 3 hours. You can't beat the price for the services that they offer. They also have monthly specials. read more

I'm glad I made the decision to attend this school after spending quite some time online doing research on aesthetic schools in the area. All the teachers were willing to answer questions (I had a lot) even if you weren't in their class. In the student clinic several clients commented that the level of service they received there was as good-and some said even better - than some spas they've been to. The owner, Chris, is always available and willing to help not only students, but graduates in their career goals. I've asked for input and assistance several times during school and even after graduating and he's always gone above and beyond. read more

The young lady I had the last time I went for my microdermabrasion and my facial she was fabulous I wish I could have every time but the young lady who gave me my massage was she needs to still be in training for at least another year she didn't go to the point swimwear I told I told her for more pressure I told her I needed my feet down which I have Fabulous Feet and she just kind of like rub your hand across the man that was it I'm on my feet all day I want my feet massage they didn't smell. Don't have corns and bunions I have actually beautiful feet they've been sucked on plenty of times but anyway so hopefully I don't have her for my next massage but I do highly recommend this place everyone's not bad read more
