The schedule has a well-attended 6 a.m. class for local commuters (it's one of the few times I know I can get on the mat) as well as competition classes and extra-curricular strength training and stretching classes. The school has cultivated a great community that supports all levels (and age groups) of jiu jitsu from high-level competitors to novices just finding the sport. Adam and Karen, the owners and head coaches, provide excellent instruction and truly care about their students. When I competed in a tournament in Manhattan, Adam went with me to coach from the rail. I was the only student competing that day and he still made time, away from his own family and commitments, to head into the city. Last, the kids program is great. The coaches create a fun atmosphere that is still conducive to learning and building their skills in a safe manner. If you're curious about training, I highly suggest checking out the school.

Being open for over three decades, I was confident that this was not a fly by night place, and was something I could look forward to participating in for a long time. The classes have been 12-15 students at a time, with sufficient instructors (as well as Sifu Al himself) to focus on practicioners of varying levels for a more personal level of training.

The top reasons to choose Al Bender's Academy for instruction in traditional martial arts would be, mainly: (1) authentic and effective instruction in any or all of four styles of Chinese martial arts, Northern Shaolin, Taiji (Yang Family Style), Xingyi, and Bagua, with emphasis on the first two; (2) instruction is conducted in English language, so you won't need to be fluent in Mandarin Chinese to learn; (3) his personable, humorous style (watch out for some killer puns, haha!) helps keep a low student turnaround, a camaraderie with and among his students, and a high number of his students who have been inspired to work long and hard enough to earn black-sash promotions; (4) his teaching strategy offers a balance of both form and proper technique and application for practical self defense. I chose New Jersey Tai Chi through a regional magazine, and I was delighted with its holistic approach to fitness, martial arts, and mind/body wellness. And my experience there did not disappoint. In the short time that I have been practicing with Harry, Paul, and others, I am learning not just the movements and breathing, but also leveraging the strength of my entire body. In addition to the physical movements, I am also learning to focus with my mind on the flow of energy and listening through Push Hands with my mind's eye. In every class, Harry demonstrates the application of those elegant moves into practical and powerful self-defense tactics. It's still too early to tell the full health benefits yet, but I feel more flexible, more at ease with my mind and body, and TaiChi is now a part of my exercise routine.

At age 3, she recognized that my son was bright, creative and had a TON of energy. She suggested that we check out Talium in Bloomfield, as that's where her 2 grown sons went when they were younger. (Even after all those years, she remembered Master Mike fondly.) Here we are almost 4 years later and my oldest son (10 y.o.) is soon testing for his black belt and my youngest (almost 8 y.o.) is now a purple belt. Master Mike, Master Kris, Instructor Gavin, Instructor Matthew, and Master Trish are like our family of coaches. My boys have not only learned Tae-Kwon-Do skills, physical training, self-defense but they have also learned self-discipline, respect, and character education. The school and the masters/teachers have worked tirelessly with us as parents to strengthen the "home-school" connection so that the child receives the same message regarding listening, following multi-step directions, responsibility and respect (just to name a few). I visited a few studios before we committed to Talium. I ultimately chose Talium because of the layout of the facilities, the methods of teaching (not game-based, but curriculum based), the significance of Korean culture and the clarity of instruction. A bonus that I learned over the years is that this location is indeed accredited in South Korea. I highly recommend Talium Bloomfield Martial Arts for your child! They have a wonderful team of masters/instructors who come to know your child and love them (sometimes, tough love!) by supporting their instruction and character development. The community of families that join add to the positive experience. Thank you, Talium, for all your years of dedication and commitment to my boys' growth!
