Cool little U.S. Post Office - one which has been here as long as I can remember - it sits right…read moreoff of Route 55 in between Haymarket and The Plains - sitting right in Thoroughfare Gap - a break in the Bull Run mountain chain. It's an interesting little post office for a few reasons - it sits on the side of the road all by its lonesome little self; it is the first country post office I can ever recall seeing with a security fence around the front door (see the picture attached to this review); and the little receipt printers they are using must be 15-20 years old. I went in earlier this week to mail a package that needed to be weighed for proper postage - I decided on a whim to try out the Broad Run PO instead of the Haymarket Post Office - where there is ALWAYS a line and usually only one or two postal clerks. It's a few miles farther out of my way, but always a pretty drive! Well, I was the only one at the Broad Run PO! The clerk was sitting behind a desk in the back when I arrived. I asked him if they get much business - he said yes at times they do - he went on to say that they get customers from Haymarket, The Plains, and Warrenton (as well as the surrounding Broad Run zip code). When I asked for a receipt, that old receipt printer was so very loud and slow - it seemed like it took 2 minutes to print my receipt (it was actually less time than that) - I was somewhat amused and entertained by the fact that after all these years - the same good ole equipment is still functioning and good enough for a country post office.

This location is small - one window. But very under-utilized. I find that the Haymarket PO is always to busy - there is usually a long line. So I've started planning my trips to the PO as part of other trips to visit either the Vint Hill or Broad Run PO's. He told me that barely anyone comes in to this PO. I boxed and mailed a package, mailed two letters, and bought some postage stamps. Great service!

Both are small and underutilized, but service is always fast and friendly. They do not offer all of the services that the larger branches do, but for what I need, they are perfect. Please keep in mind that these small facilities only have one or two employees, so they may close an hour for lunch. Always check their hours before going around lunch time so you wont waste a trip.

The first time was a bit of a hassle - I wanted to mail something Certified with Return Receipt. I also wanted to insure it. But the P.O. allegedly won't allow you to Certify and Insure it - it's one or the other. The Asian woman who was assisting me and I seemed to have a communications problem. She kept telling me something - but she was not responding to the question I kept posing to her. I wanted to know since I could not put both a Certify and Insure on the letter - did the insurance also act as a letter certification? She just kept regurgitating her answer that I could not put both on the letter. Fine. Just give me the damn Certify with Return Receipt. Picking up my mailbox keys was infinitely less frustrating.

Since the appointment of the new postmaster, service at this branch has deteriorated significantly…read more Package deliveries have become unreliable, with carriers routinely finding excuses not to deliver items and instead leaving notices requiring customers to pick up packages at the post office. When questioned about why packages are not being delivered, we have been told that the new carrier has "his own delivery style" or that it is "the new policy" for customers to pick up packages. If that is truly the case, then what is the purpose of paying shipping fees and having packages addressed for home delivery? For years, our mail carriers provided dependable service, and we showed our appreciation by leaving holiday gifts as a token of gratitude. Unfortunately, the current level of service has eliminated any goodwill that once existed. Customers should not have to make unnecessary trips to the post office simply because delivery personnel choose not to do the job they were hired to do. This branch needs accountability and a serious commitment to customer service. Residents deserve the delivery service they are paying for--not excuses and inconvenience.

You may find it to be other things, but please just understand my aim here is to be Useful. Over the years as my brother and I have taken our annual sojourn on the AT we have learned a few Things. He's learned more than I have because he's wired better that way but some of these Things we've learned together and call Shared Wisdom. Some pertains to hiking and things pertaining to the out of doors, others more generally to Life. Considering that we've walked from the ME/NH border to the Shenandoah Mountains and experienced Stuff along the way it stands to reason that we'd be a bit more comprehensive than when we started out. One of our discoveries is this: Six days of food on your back is totes heavy. Last year's solution involved using a second car and doing a drive-around every other day (drive two cars to the end of a day's worth of walking, leave one car there, return to the beginning of said leg, park second car there, walk the leg to the car parked at the end, drive up to the car at the beginning, drive both cars to the end of the next leg, drive back to where we had finished the prior leg, park, repeat). We could leave food and tents if we didn't need them and beer and stuff we'd rather not carry for six days in the cars and resupply daily or every other day and get biscuits and bacon at convenience stores and we were crazy light but the ordeal kind of involved math and felt too decadent so we didn't want to do it again this year. So this year we decided to cache food in holes and I took a long time making packages I thought maybe bears wouldn't smell in a hole and we took a shovel from the garage and headed south. But on the way I noticed while studying the map that kind of near the trail-road crossings at two-day intervals there were Post Offices. Light bulb. Both were swell and filled the bill perfectly but this one is better because it's like only a half-mile off the trail and there's a store nearby where you can buy a can opener if you forgot yours and maybe a pack of smokes if the walk isn't already hard enough. This is also the first of the two we encountered and inside was Carmen who is hands down the most beautiful postal person I have ever encountered in my short bittersweet life. Prettiest ink east of the Rocky Mountains, I daresay. She took our package wrapped up to fool bears and put it in a cupboard. And when we appeared three days later a little worse for wear and tear but now with said missing can opener there she was and there it was and all was once again right with the world. Useful tip - hikers of the Harper's Ferry to Shenandoah leg of the trail - mail or drop of your cache with Carmen because she'll take care of it and your back won't be breaking. She spoke of camping and morels and other local things and mentioned her fiance because I guess she felt that would be a judicious thing to do. She accepted the sprig of dogwood as a token of our appreciation. She made our day. Even an IRS scandal won't diminish my view of the US government today, thanks to Carmen.

Inside is lined with brass post office boxes against gray and burgundy walls. Inside this spotless lobby are desks, mailing supplies and a greeting card stand. Dedicated in 1960, this post office shows a bit of wear on the floors and wood paneling, but that's to be expected for a building of this age. The parking lot is moderate size with a few parking spaces In the front and a few more in the back. There are two self service machines that you use to buy stamps, print labels, and more. There are never enough staff so there is always a line no matter the time of day. The hours of operation on weekdays are usually 9am to 6 pm which is great compare to usps in Maryland where they closed at 4:30 pm. All in all, I would recommend anyone who need to use usps services to come to this location.

Aldie has a population of about 195 people, and is a beautiful historic area. The post office is a little brick building that could use a facelift on the outside. The sign out front was a bit dingy. Inside though boasted a big bay window that was covered with a pretty geranium plant and more plants graced the desk and corners of the building, compliments of The Aldie Horticultural Society. The post master was very friendly and pleasant, and stamped my postcard with the official postal stamp. I also purchased several post card stamps for my travels. The bulletin board was chock full of local flyers and news. And there's also a glass case featuring the history of the town of Aldie. The mailing supplies were running a bit low, but the charm and character of this place was refreshing. The Aldie Mill is a popular attraction, and there are a few expensive antique shops, and scenic farms and wineries. Aldie derives its name from the Mercer family, who owned the mill, and named the town after Aldie Castle in Scotland, a nod to his Scottish roots.
