The Drewryville post office became damaged when a fire in an adjacent building caught fire in 2018. Plans to renovate and reopen the post office have been underway since and I'm sure the 750+ residents would love to see this historic landmark refurbished soon. There's been some indication that a new building may house the post office, but it would be a shame to move it from this beloved spot. If you get a chance to come to this small town, you'll want to take the time to visit this unique structure. We loved peering through the windows at the antique fixtures, the brass mailboxes, the marble counters... incredible. Post offices services are temporarily being offered at a small mobile van across the street from this building. It has minimal hours and it's rather inconvenient to the residents. Here's hoping this post office rises from the ashes and returns to its epic former glory!

The wood interior was magnificent and the New Deal mural was outstanding! The brass mailboxes and vintage fixtures fit right in with this classic style. There's a hidden plaque, behind some bushes in the front of the building, paying homage to James Farley, the postmaster in 1938. Be sure to check out the LOVE sign made from peanut shells! This could have been 5 stars however the workers here knew nothing about the place and seemed clueless. Not very friendly or helpful. The bushes were overgrown! Several business owners told me they only get their mail twice a week. Kick it up a notch to make this post office stellar! Hours M-F 8:30-5 Saturday 10-12

The county seat, originally called Northampton Courthouse, was renamed Jackson in 1823 to honor Andrew Jackson, then a national hero and soon-to-be president. Before European settlement, the region was home to the Tuscarora and Meherrin tribes. As settlers arrived--primarily English, Scotch-Irish, Scottish, and French Huguenots--many Native Americans were displaced. The Roanoke River, which winds through the county, served as a vital trade route and attracted immigrants with its fertile soil. The historic courthouse was completed in 1858 and is a classic example of the Green Revival design. Its temple-form design faces south and features a commanding prostyle tetrastyle portico supported by fluted Ionic columns. These columns, resting on substantial pedestals that rise from the high foundation, lend the building a monumental presence. The current modern courthouse was completed between 2022 and 2024 and stands a short distance from the historic 1858 Greek Revival Courthouse. They share the address. It is a modern two-story building composed of red brick, glass, and concrete, with a flat roofline and clean, geometric lines. Inside, the courthouse houses both the County Superior Court and County District Court for the 6th Judicial District, which includes neighboring Bertie, Halifax, and Hertford counties. It is marker number E-99 and it was erected in 1989 by the Division of Archives and History. John H. Eaton was born in Halifax County in 1790, likely on one of his family's town lots in the heart of Halifax. After leaving the University of North Carolina without graduating, he moved to Tennessee, married Myra Lewis, and entered Andrew Jackson's inner circle. In 1840 he broke with Jackson by declining to support Martin Van Buren for president. Eaton lived the rest of his life in Washington DC. [Review 54 of 2026 - 4533 in North Carolina - 25244 overall]

The school was Methodist‑affiliated, created by local leaders for the intellectual, moral, and religious education of young women. Reverend James Manley Rhodes served as its guiding figure, returning in 1889 to expand the campus after briefly leaving for another post. The college offered a two year curriculum in subjects ranging from chemistry and physics to languages and history, and by 1908 it enrolled hundreds of students from across the South and beyond. A devastating fire in January 1919 destroyed most of the buildings, and with Rhodes unable to rebuild, the institution closed. [Review 55 of 2026 - 4534 in North Carolina - 25245 overall]
