Wow, hard to believe no one has reviewed Howl yet…read more We visited Bayfield over Labor Day, staying at a B&B down the road. Before leaving Minneapolis, we booked a half-day yacht cruise for Saturday morning, which turned out to be lovely. The reason I mention the cruise is that our captain also owns Howl (as well as the Howl Adventure Center just south of town). We stopped into the retail store the following morning as we dodged raindrops, enjoying a chat with the captain and his family. I would characterize the clothing and equipment on the shelf here (as well as the Adventure Center) as "upper end" although insufficient to completely supply many an outdoor trek. That said, the equipment on sale was interesting, reasonably priced, not overly "touristy" (although there were some items geared to the visiting tourist). As an aging backpacker, it was very difficult to not pick up a few items, but I've vowed not to buy more "stuff" until I get my knees replaced! I did succumb to a few bicycling accessories at the Adventure Center, however! Howl Clothing is right downtown, just a block away from the docks and right across the street from the Bayfield Inn. It's worth stopping in to browse, and we will use their sailing services when next we visit during the summer.

Probably cover a few others, but those are definitely going to find something they like here. I'd say the taste overall skewed a little more cutesy than my own personal taste but I still found things I liked and would buy. You can easily spend an afternoon here if you go through the exhibits, watch the film, shop at the…read moregift store, and walk on the trails surrounding the building. About half of the building is dedicated to a very educational museum about the ecosystem of this region, the native peoples who live here, and how they were impacted by the fur trade. Upstairs is a rotating art exhibit about the region. You can climb the winding staircase to the upper tower of the building (or take the elevator) so that you gaze upon the wetlands and forests nearby. There's a 3/4 mile boardwalk that takes you though the conifer forest, sedge march, and grassy fields where you can take a rest on the benches and animal watch. Lots of red wing blackbirds were there with their recognizable calls. Very educational.

I did buy a Yopperlite and had asked the clerk where I could go to collect rocks. He did tell me where I could try looking for Yooperlites - he really didn't have to do that! He was really great to talk to. I so appreciate that he was willing to talk to me about finding my own rocks. I did want to hunt Yooperlites, but also for any other beach rocks that struck my fancy. This is a smaller gift shop on the Main Street of one of my favorite towns to visit going to the…read more'North Shore'. I like looking at the handmade items along with the books There is usually some local artwork of interest. My experience with the person running the store was not as 'friendly' as some of the other posters. I was greeted pleasantly and made small talk while browsing. All was going well until the man at the desk asked me if I was taking pictures on my cell phone. I was standing near the front counter using my cellphone to text my friend where to meet me. I was so insulted and embarrassed in front of other customers. So be warned - phones away and hands up if you shop there.

There are like 50% of unique type antiques, but this has such great stuff, and it is not a tourist trap of stuff. It has some local artist pictures and other artist stuff. There is clothes, jewelry , trinkets, so much you just have to go inside and check it out. The girl behind the counter was so friendly, and the prices are not unreasonable. Please check them out.
