What a nightmare. I went with my elderly parents to help them check in because they travel with their dog and have traveled with dog(s) for over 30 years and it's always a bit challenging. They take their dog because they adore her and this trip plan to be away just short of 2 months. Traveling with animals is always stressful and now that United classifies them as cargo all the rules have changed, they found that out last year. So, to try and simplify things they decided to fly out of SB rather then LAX which seemed to be the ideal, flying out of our great little airport. Or should have been ideal. My mom had already spent HOURS on the phone planning this trip and with the goal of preventing any snags on their actual day of departure.
So, we arrived at United at 7 in the evening, 2 1/2 hours before their flight, plenty of time, right? To cut to the chase, the dog's paperwork was not processed until roughly 8:45. As the young woman who worked the counter explained, they have not been properly trained to process animals, she kept calling United and was put on hold, given 3 different numbers to call, apparently called her boss at home to try and get help AND tried to single handledly help the other people who would show up to check in. At least 3 of those people were there about missing luggage. During the almost 2 hours this was unfolding I would say another staff member was around to help for maybe 15 minutes. If the dog situation had not turned into such an astounding display of idiocy she probably could have handled anything else that came up by herself. What bothered me was to see her in a tough bind with no one to turn to. United failed miserably to assist their employee and the way they were staffed at the desk also was a complete recipe for disaster. At one point my poor dad said "Let's just go home, were not going to make our flight". Toward the end of all of this I was sad to find myself agreeing with him, especially as I saw their poor dog becoming anxious after the long wait, whereas she was coping with it all beautifully for the first hour and more she was fine.
Lastly, the guy who loaded the lugage was trying to put her cage on a cart by himself, the cage is big, she is a pretty big dog, and I turn to see my dad trying to help, my dad who has a bad back, and at this point is just desperate to get things sqaured away.
So. Point is, United was screwing up right and left that night, for as I said, at least 3 very unhappy people were there needing help about lost luggage, almost two exasperating hours wasted on transporting a dog who was completely prepared with all documents, etc....to go when we got there and then to see that once we knew there was a problem United had a complete lack of adequate back up for their staff when in a bind. And the cost of dogs traveling now is, well, let's just say United charges so much that that poor dog should have been given her own seat on that airplane. Bottom line is,this kind of poor customer serice for what they charge exposes them to really not be giving a you-know-what about their customers. read more
