We recently completed a backyard remodel with Unique Home Builders that included pavers and artificial turf in the backyard, as well as artificial turf in the front yard. Before choosing a contractor, we met with roughly 15 different companies, and from our very first meeting, Nir stood out from the rest. Unlike many contractors we spoke with, Nir never made us feel pressured or rushed into making a decision. He took the time to thoroughly explain the entire process, what to expect, and answer all of our questions. We made a few design changes throughout the project, and Nir was always willing to meet with us, come back out to the house, review the revisions, and make sure we were getting exactly what we wanted. Throughout the entire project, he was always just a text or phone call away whenever we had a question. One thing we were especially happy about was how quickly they were able to get started. Within just a few days of signing the agreement, the crew was onsite and working. We wanted the project completed in time to enjoy our backyard during the summer, so that was a huge plus for us. The demo phase moved quickly, and throughout the entire project it was clear that everyone on the crew took pride in their work. There was always progress being made, and nobody was standing around waiting for something to do. The entire project took about 2-3 weeks, with a few days of delay due to an existing plumbing issue we discovered with our old galvanized main line. This was not related to their work, but once the issue was identified, Nir and his team were able to handle that project for us as well, including permits and inspections. After the plumbing work was completed, they got right back on track and finished everything quickly. As with any construction project, a few small items and details came up along the way that needed clarification or adjustment. Construction projects rarely go perfectly, and we had a few misunderstandings and unexpected issues come up throughout the process. What impressed us was that whenever something needed attention, Nir took ownership of it, communicated with us, and made sure it was resolved. In the end, everything was completed to our satisfaction. One of our biggest concerns before starting was who would actually be working on our property. We work from home and have kids, so we wanted to feel comfortable with the people who would be at our house every day for several weeks. One thing we really appreciated about Unique Home Builders was that they used their own crew. We got to know the team, everyone was respectful, and it made the entire experience much more comfortable. There were also a few design details that we changed while work was already underway. For example, around our palm trees we originally planned to do circular paver borders, but once we saw them taking shape, we decided we preferred square borders instead. We mentioned it to the foreman, and the team made the adjustment without any issues. That flexibility made a big difference. The job site was kept clean and organized throughout the project. During the demo phase there were naturally some days where material and debris accumulated in the front yard, but everything was organized, contained, and safely coned off. We also appreciated the little things. Whenever we were leaving or returning home while the crew was working, they would move equipment and materials out of the way for us, and they would even sweep up before leaving for the day. Those details did not go unnoticed. Pricing was very fair. Nir wasn't the cheapest bid we received, but he also wasn't the most expensive. Given the amount of work involved and the quality of the finished product, we felt the value was excellent. Just as importantly, the final cost matched the agreed contract price. The true test of a contractor isn't whether problems arise, it's how they handle them. Nir and his team consistently communicated, addressed concerns, and delivered a finished project we're proud of. UHB renovated our backyard: pool, patio/deck, turf, pavers. We started Nov 2023. They estimated completion by May 2024. The permit process took 10-11 months. The pool wasn't completed til July 2025. We had extended issues due to their teams' mistakes, requiring repairs and endlessly debating who would pay. We're just now finalizing everything (Sep 2026), ~3 years later. I honestly don't think they're all bad. UHB takes on too much work; when constantly switching PMs, the overall vision is lost, details fall through cracks. I'm surprised UHB has 5 stars--their own workers revealed other homeowners complaining about delays & being stuck with bills for UHB's mistakes. TWO NAMES to Note: BEN YOHAI was our original PM. He was communicative, honest, always in our corner. He unfortunately had to leave for personal reasons right before construction. SAMUEL "SAMMY" LOPEZ replaced Ben (~Oct 2024); seemed great at first: Personable, thorough, projected he had our back. Until he didn't. NOTE: UHB's architect never stepped foot in our backyard--no topographical analysis despite our living on a hill. Plans were created from secondhand pictures / measurements. This oversight haunted us throughout the project, and Sammy was too hasty to catch errors. CONSTRUCTION ISSUES: - Pool built partially above ground without our consent--Sammy's unilateral decision to avoid a redesign to account for the slope. - Elevated pool created exposed electrical conduits requiring a concrete bench to hide - Pool exterior walls needed smooth-stucco--Sammy implied they'd cover it, then tried to invoice us - Spa walls height built below water line tile; spa temp would always match pool temp. Foreman and crew were replaced that day. - Pool vault drainage not connected. Sammy insisted they were connected, despite my photographic evidence. Next day, he says: "Good thing you mentioned it--it wasn't connected." - Deck ceiling only 7 ft; ceiling fans in my face. Architect marked foundation-to-roof (8 ft); Sammy didn't verify floor-to-ceiling was only 7 ft. - Deck length didn't match plans; required a sub-deck for stairs to reach ground, which UHB tried to charge us - North retaining wall foundation exposed plus 1 ft soil underneath: I explicitly asked Sammy to discuss options before leveling; he ordered it anyway. Storms eroded soil underneath; foundation sat exposed for months. - Gravel dumped on neighbor's curb for weeks, washed down street in storms. Neighbors complained, city fined us (still waiting on promised reimbursement). - Empty pool w/rainwater bred mosquitos for months And I don't have space to detail: wrong pavers installed twice, pool coping cracking repeatedly, pavers sinking from improper compaction, salt water pumped into our plants instead of storm drains, wood decking I asked them to save thrown out, etc. THE CHECK INCIDENT: Feb 2025. Every element had been started, but NOT ONE was finished; we just established there were major issues on the table. But we had a plan. That's when Sammy asks for two of the last three checks: $25k (Upon Patio) and $15k (Trex). Mind you, we were still on good terms at this point. I agreed to write him those checks, in good faith--but I told him: "You can't cash both. Our account can't cover it and we may default on our mortgage." He looked me in the eye: "I'll hand the office the first check. I'll personally hold the second until you tell me." UHB cashed both within 8 hours. That was the last time I saw Sammy. THE RUNAROUND: A UHB supervisor took over, explaining Sammy abandoned the job. He tried to claim: "Our project managers *never* ask for checks until work is done." I was dumbfounded. We were standing in my backyard surrounded by dirt and unfinished concrete. I said: "Look around you. Not ONE element is finished--and we've paid 95% of the contract." He didn't respond. Just deflected. For months, if I didn't agree to pay for THEIR mistakes, he'd vanish for weeks. He used my son's promised pool party as leverage. The pool could've been filled months earlier--he just didn't schedule it. Wasn't filled until June; couldn't use it until July. We missed half that summer because UHB was playing financial games. THE BILLING DISPUTE: This summer (2026), we've been debating w/UHB Accounting over the final ~$9,500 we owe them vs the $16,800 they claimed we owed. They tried to charge us for permits they had no invoices for and ones we already paid the city for, tried to reneg on prior discount promises... and they threatened Arbitration if I didn't pay. After seeing irrefutable evidence, they quietly revised to $9,500. BOTTOM LINE: Backyard/pool looks great now. Some workers were skilled & kind. But project management was a disaster, we were treated like ATMs for their mistakes, and refusing to pay caused months / years of delay. Hired this contractor for a backyard renovation project last Summer. The project was to add a couple of Planter walls on the hill next to our pool. The quoted price was alright but the details were missing such as exactly whats covered in the job. later, had to pay more to get the originally promised job. I've been building out my yard based on the wifey's vision and dream. Everything from wall to wall was re-done. However, after years of back breaking work on the weekends I decided to just hired a reliable contractor to finish the last landscape/hardscape. I interviewed about 10-12 companies. It's normal to get various estimates but in the end I chose Unique Home Builders. They were not the cheapest nor highest but very reasonable especially since they have a current contractor's license (checked via Contractors State License Board) to include worker's liability insurance. That's important in case a worker gets injured, etc. From the start I worked with Steve Cohen. He was one of their Project Managers. Steve was great at keeping me informed throughout the process and made sure corrections were completed if needed. He stopped by daily to check on the progress and made sure things are on schedule. Have you ever been to a concert and the opening band was better than the headliner? Sometimes things in life exceed our expectations and that's exactly what Nir and his crew did with our driveway. At the beginning, I sent out requests for bids and ended up having 5 companies come over to give me a quote. Unique Home Builders came in at the lowest bid, but my decision was much more than price (*this is always important to note). I just felt a connection and that he was genuine. Not pushy, like the other bidders did immediately. A few suggestions and options were considered, and a follow up appointment so my fiance could meet him as well to make the final decision (as with many households, the husband doesn't get to make the final call so it was important that she felt the company doing the job was genuine). We signed the contract and within two weeks, the entire job was completed. Our house went from looking like Ice Cube's house in the movie Friday, to the house in Fresh Prince of Bel Air. I've only got good things to say about these guys! I worked with Ben and his crew for the backyard of our new construction home. From the beginning of the project to the end of the project, Ben was very responsive and answered all my questions along the way. I was happy to know he was always just a quick text or phone call away. During our consultation, he listened to our wish list and made a ton of recommendations based on that. He was very honest and told us what would and would not work given the amount of space we have - about 500 square feet or so. Ultimately, our goal was to have that cool outdoor LA patio restaurant or coffeeshop vibe. Simple, clean, hip, and cozy. We decided to go with a minimal paver design for the main space with a parameter of planters around the yard. The pavers we picked were a concrete grey 24x24 inch square that were laid straight throughout. For plants, I really wanted to be able to pick them out myself, so I ended up going to a local nursery and buying them there. Rather than paying for delivery with the nursery, Ben's crew was able to pick them up and plant them for me! One thing I wish I would have done was had them install a drip irrigation system and maybe some lights. I was trying to save a couple hundred bucks. But that's nothing an easy DIY project can't complete, right? For price, we found Unique Home Builders to be very fair and competitive. You will for sure get the service and quality you pay for. Obviously prices will vary based on the amount of space you are having done. I say you get a quote for your project and see how it compares to other companies. Ben had availability about a week after we talked, which was nice. They worked very fast and efficiently while maintaining high-quality work. I'm beyond grateful that they were careful (brand new home!), punctual, and cleaned up after working every single day. Overall, I would highly recommend Unique Home Builders. We need to put a retaining wall in front of our hillside home. When I requested an estimate on Yelp. I received 5 replies, after 5 appointments and 5 bids. I decided to go with Zack/ Unique Home Builders. Their bid was in the middle and Zack was willing to work with me with the contract and time frame. We had a good start, Zack and Alex and I worked out the details on day one, we had to adjust a couple of things along the way, they were easy to work with and met my requirements. We just had our backyard paved by Unique Home Builders. The difference is night and day. Somehow the open space seem so much more open and roomy. The original quote from UHB was very comparable to other quotes we got from other companies. However, Ben was willing to come down a little bit further on the price and also gave us a 2-year warranty on labor instead of 1 year. Over the course of the project UBH was very responsive, accommodating and very willing to work with me. The team that did the actual labor work were extremely hard workers, very friendly and humble. I had a few changes as work was being done, but the workers were very willing to make course corrections and adjusted. The project took a bit longer to finished than I expected but I am very satisfied with the end result. I still have my front yard and driveway to work on and will definitely consider UHB for the job. read more

Dealing with city permits and delays beyond our control can be frustrating, but Ben at Unique Home Builders helped us through the process and ultimately got us a backyard that we love. Eleazar and his crew were great and built us a beautiful wood accent wall that really completes our backyard. They also poured a ton a concrete and made us a pathway & lighted stairs that are much safer than what we had before. Roy & his team constructed a fence that looks exactly like we had envisioned and were flexible in meeting our requests as the project evolved. Ben was easy to communicate with and always had a great attitude. He also got us a good break in price in response to unanticipated delays and any extra work required.
