This is our second remodel project with Unique. I can't recommend these guys enough. Their design team created a beautiful plan and their construction team (Alex) and GC (Scott) were amazing in executing the plan. What I love most is not everything went as planned but any issues and concerns were addressed and corrected. The carpet in our son's room was stained. The plastic tore and construction dust and feet stained it. Scott had it cleaned and it didn't come up so they had it replaced. No arguments from them. They are not the cheapest, but they justify their price with their work. My wife and I are extremely happy with Unique and will use them again if we have any other home remodeling needs. read more

Unique Builders, in my experience and opinion, has unethical business practices and I would recommend not working with them. When I declined to continue with a project with Brandon, the company inflated charges to consume the majority of the deposit that I paid them. No physical work was ever performed yet they charged $175 per hour in labor for sending one email to my insurance carrier asking why Xactimate charges were not accepted. They then charged $125 for two Xactimate reports: along with the labor to produce the reports. Very unethical. The owner Darryl stated that they are not in the business of assisting clients in getting work done elsewhere and proceeded to do with my deposit whatever he saw fit for his pockets. I would advise not to use ths company, but if you do.... DO NOT PAY DEPOSIT BY CHECK! They will tell you that to use a credit card the fee is a high percent however, I found, that they do this to keep your deposit because if you pay by check you will have no ally with the bank to dispute funds as you would with a credit card. I would have paid a set fee for an Xactimate with any other company from $60 - $100 with no hourly rate attached. They literally assumed my deposit by charging me for two reports and labor of $175 per hour, which they say was over 3 hours to generate the report.... I guess the paper for the report is $125 and the labor is $175 per hour forover 3 hours for a 3 page report. So unethical. Very bad business practices. The contract states the deposit is refundable if services are not rendered but that is false. I understand taking a flat fee for Xactimates but Darryl went overboard to assume as much of the deposit as possible... Please do your homework on multiple companies... I would not recommend Unique Builders. read more

From the moment I called Unique Builders I knew that I was in good hands! I originally spoke with Michael to get an expert to come out to my home after I had a leak right before Christmas in my kitchen!!! They came out even though it was the holiday so water damage was contained and having water to use was taken care of. Michael was very knowledgeable and went through the process of explaining how the company supports the project until finished. The execution of the project was amazing! Ana and Eric were so helpful in designing my kitchen remodel from start to finish. I felt like they knew EXACTLY what I wanted and I found them to be a pleasure to work with. Eric went above and beyond on a daily basis to ensure the project was on track and done to perfection. I felt that the project was completed earlier than expected and Unique Builders was able to work with my insurance company to maximize my claim to the fullest! They knew what needed replacing and walked through with me along with the insurance adjuster so items could be discussed with correct facts and knowledge. I was able to go to work like normal and know the project was still being done by an excellent work crew! I was so thrilled with how my kitchen turned out that I decided to remodel my bathroom too! My project has been an absolute disaster since the day of completion. I have found several issues with workmanship. I have communicated my issues and nothing has been done. The ceiling lights are all wrong and I can't fix them myself due to them being siliconed to the ceiling. I'll have to ruin the ceilings to fix it. They over ordered materials and took them with them. Never returned my money to me. Now... 2 weeks later... water leaking from upstairs bathroom down the outside and inside of the house. Waiting to see if anyone has anything to say on that matter. For the amount spent..You would think there would be better results. read more

I have not used this company so I can't speak for their work or the quality of their work. I was just left in total shock. The project manager/sales manager, Ronen ( whatever his exact position is) that came out for an estimate was so arrogant. Walked in, looked at the stairs, we talked about everything that I wanted and then I said you're more than welcome to go up, take measurements and he laughed at me and said "it was all up here" pointing to his head. Okay, so we proceed, he gives me some pointers on why I shouldn't do certain things and I appreciated all of them. Then he asked if we could sit down and talk numbers and asked what our budget was. I already knew why he was asking and I said my husband is the one that deals with the budget and I'm just the designer and creator of the house. So whatever I like/ want/envision, is what we try to go with. As he proceeds to open his workbook that's zipped, a check happens to be laying on top of ALL Of his work orders. And he laughs and says " oh this was from yesterday, a deposit. And actually shows me the check which was 12,000 and for a gentleman named Orlando J. O ( I'll leave full name out for privacy purposes. But I would be livid if my check was just visible for others to see with my routing number and account number on the check. This guy obviously has to make it seem like his company is some hot shot company. Kept telling me how much of a "small" project this would be for them and that he will do it anyways in hopes that I would use them again in the future. Total joke. Kept pushing prefab after he gave me the quote of 18-28k for a "simple job" according to him. which we are having someone else install carpet on the stairs. Just wanted to share my experience on here. Hopefully the owner Steve Zitman sees this and addresses this guy. It's very unprofessional and making your business look bad! read more

Hired to pour 640 sq ft concrete slab install fence and install over stove ducting. Original quote was within budget but quickly got beyond due to builder plan changes. Work was started quickly and entire crew was very nice. I think the crew takes on too many jobs at one time. They daily talked about having another job to go do or coming in later after they finished another home. I am very understanding so timelines didn't bother me as I was on staycation but small details were an issue for me. Clean up after the job was an after thought. I decided to help the guy(only one person was sent after I asked about my yard about 3 days after final payment) lay sod in my yard after the bobcat trampled my front yard and dropped large chunks of concrete. I found water bottles, cigarette butts and other small trash were left in my backyard after I cleaned up my spaces. Not a bad company just stretched way too thin. The charge wasn't cheap. This experience taught me to speak up early and often. Say immediately if something looks wrong. Unique was willing to accommodate requests but it would take some time. read more

RUN....don't walk, from this absolute horrible excuse of a "building and contracting" company. The other bad reviews reflect the same AWFUL experience that we had working with these absolute clowns. Our home experienced flooding the day that my fathers home was to be sold to new buyers. By chance...the Unique Builders team was there with the new buyers to take a look at the master bathroom they wanted to remodel. Unique builders was able to do the water mitigation and demo that was required...but they did much more than that. The unique builders removed cabinet tops in the bathrooms that were NOT damaged by the water and they tossed out faucets...all of this we did not know because they were not sharing images of they work they were doing. Unique builders was not working in our best interest and were making very costly decisions. At this point the close of the home was on pause and I was having to deal with these guys lying to me and our insurance adjuster. Unique builders was caught lying to Travelers insurance about the type of flooring that was in the home because they were trying to mark up the cost of the flooring 3x...this caused major issues for us dealing with insurance to close out this claim. This is still an ongoing process and they reached out asking for more money today. These guys are absolutely horrific. If you want to waste thousands of dollars and be stressed by all means...sign up for the circus show that working with these guys is...or do your research and find ANYONE other than Unique Builders. Houston is a massive city with many options and these guys should be at the absolute bottom of the list. read more

I came across Unique Builders on google and loved their work! Therefore, I called to make a consultation for 2PM, the representative was very helpful and attentive. The day of the appointment arrived and I received a call to confirm the appointment. It's 2:10PM and the guy doing the estimate had not arrived. I decided to call the builders and ask if everything was okay and if we were still moving forward with the appointment. The representative apologized and said that someone else was supposed to call me to let me know that the guy will be arriving 35 min late. I let them know that it was okay no worries! 30 more minutes passed and the guy finally arrived 1hour and 20 minutes late without a call or apology for the inconvenience. I should have taken the red flags from there. The guy did the estimate and told me that he would be emailing me with the all of the information and did not. I will be looking somewhere else. read more

I called Unique Builders to break the wall between my current livingroom and dinning room to create an open space living. This was a supporting wall and I had a lot of concerns. Also, we needed to make sure the removed wall we can do something about the floors because I didn't want to spend a fortune redoing the entire flooring. My 14-day kitchen remodel project that turned into a 41-day fiasco. My husband and I decided to remodel our kitchen. After listening to horror stories about the remodeling process, we decided to look for an established company even if it meant paying more money. We made our choice to go with Unique Builders & Development, Inc. based on the company's experience, which was reiterated by the salesperson, who came out to the house and gave us the quote. On January 5th, the salesperson and the project supervisor came to my home to go over all the details of our project. The supervisor took pictures, measurements and we agreed to begin the project on January 11th. The demolition and the addition of a pocket door to my pantry went well; unfortunately, everything else did not. Some of the cabinets ordered were the wrong size, the top cabinets had to be taken down and reinstalled because they were not installed correctly. The decorative trim around the top of the cabinets was installed upside down, therefore, the corners did not match with the cabinets. During the install and reinstall cabinets were damaged and later had to be repaired. On February 7th, I received a text from the salesperson with a question and a statement. Was I okay with substituting the granite previously selected? And that my countertop now had to be 9 1/2" instead of the agreed 12". Selecting another granite option wasn't the problem other than the inconvenience of having to go back to the showroom. The problem was making the countertop narrower. This was non-negotiable because it was the reason I chose to remodel the kitchen in the first place. This took a few days, but it was resolved favorably. Then, everything started to unravel. In an effort to speed up the project so they could collect money, they started sending people that had no experience to complete parts of the project. Multiple things were done poorly or incorrectly, and the supervisor of the project could not make decisions on how to fix each problem that surged. The company also sent their superintendent, who did not know how to fix issues either. At this time, I requested for the salesperson to come to my home to clarify the issues we were having, but he never came. He tried fixing everything via text. When the countertop guy came out to measure and do his template, he noticed the bottom cabinets had not been installed properly, therefore, he could not do his job. Now the bottom cabinets had to be removed and reinstalled to make them align. Once again, cabinets were damaged (i.e., dents, scratches, etc.) during this process. Now we were ready for electricity and plumbing. I was asked by the salesperson (via text) if I had purchased the sink and faucet for the kitchen. I replied that I had but didn't know if anything else was needed. The salesperson responded, no...that should be it. The sink purchased had a square drain and the plumber sent to do the job had never seen one like that. In order to attach the garbage disposal an adapter was needed. Not one person from Unique Builders & Development, Inc. could solve the issue; however, I solved it in 15 minutes thanks to Amazon. The lighting underneath my cabinets became another issue. We had three electricians come and try to install lights under the cabinets. They could not figure out how to synchronize the lights so they could all be controlled on one panel. During this install and uninstall, a side panel and a cabinet door were damaged and later had to be repaired. At this point, we were so over the lack of communication and the inadequacy of solving issues that we started taking pictures and documenting everything that needed to be completed and/or repaired. This process involving multiple emails expedited the project and finally on February 23rd the ordeal ended. Am I 100% satisfied? No, I am not, but the kitchen is done! The purpose of this review is to educate anyone who may be thinking of remodeling. Ask questions and make sure you know the names of each company that is subcontracted for each component of your project. In our project, only one of the companies subcontracted was reputable and basically saved the project. The company's name is Wolfvillage and I highly recommend this company. read more

I contracted with Unique Builders to help with raising the ceiling 3 feet in one of my garages as well as creating a framed space in the attic next to the same garage. I was looking for a company to primarily perform the framing of the project, along with some minor electrical, plumbing and other mechanical work. I was pleased to find that Unique Builders was willing to work with me on specific parts of the project, rather than insisting on providing a turn key solution like other contractors. Besides minor bumps in the road common to all construction projects, there where no major issues or problems encountered with Unique Builders. Scott Reach, with Unique Builders, is the individual I worked with on my project. Scott was very attentive to the project, checking on the progress of the project regularly. I found Scott very easy to work with, responding to any inquiry within a few hours. I never received any pushback or hesitancy in addressing any issue I had. Went OK. Tile selection and procurement was a little rocky. The demo and drywall team needed more supervision, and left a pretty big mess. Tile installer as very inexperienced and was doing a horrible job. But they replaced the installer and everything went MUCH better. Tim was late but final product was excellent. read more

Being a perfectionist as I am, I have no complaints at all. What I especially love is their immediate response to all my calls or texts, and there were a lot. Their project manager was an aggressive idiot. He would brag about how many jobs he was doing and when questioned about how he could take on more work he got super defensive. When we told him we were going to hire them he threw a fit like a 5 year old and hoped our project would get ruined so we'd have to call him. I highly recommend NOT hiring them. When he was showing me their work it was low quality and all prefabbed Walmart looking goods. There are much better contractors with higher quality of work. Flood victims in west Houston. Had Unique Builders come out for an estimate on repairs because they had some good reviews on the web. The gent didn't take any measurements, just went off my estimate of square footage. Showed him around and had a couple of ideas to move a wall in the bath. HIs bid? $90 / SQUARE FOOT. I didn't even pay that much for the whole house, new, including the land. Other bids I have were in the $38 to $50/ sq. ft. range. Also refused to consider a written estimate and told me only a few spots were left. Once they're gone it would be a while to get to my gutted downstairs. I realize they are busy, but to price gouge, take advantage of people desperate to put their houses back together, and expect someone to pay it is just poor business practice. read more

We had a complete kitchen remodel done on a 28 year old house. It involved moving or enclosing 3 walls - one of them an exterior modification. The project took the room down to studs and rebuilt the entire kitchen. The job done was spectacular. The crews used through the whole process were professional and their work excellent. Communications was superb. I've hired other professionals before to build outdoor kitchens, pools, etc, but this was my 1st with an interior project. I've built 4 homes from scratch. You hear all about the horror stories about remodels. Give yourself a chance to experience what is without a doubt the best, easy, and hassle free experience out there. I would definitely hire them again in a heart beat. An update 1 year since they finished. Still pleased w/the work they did. We had major renovations to our bathrooms (3). Unique was not the low bidder, but because they told us they used a "negative pressure system" during the demolition and construction to minimize dust and dirt, we went with them. The "system" was essentially non-effective. Construction dust was everywhere and the carpet was only partially covered. Our master bedroom was covered in layers of construction dust. They did clean the carpet after major work, but I am afraid most of the dust remains buried in the carpet. (After the carpet was cleaned, the glass installers ground the glass in the bedroom, no protection to bedding or carpet). Quality: Unique's quality program seemed to be "if you will accept it, it's good enough". They replaced the shower glass three times. Poor measurements, misalignment, wrong seals, etc. Unique pressured us to accept the work after each problem. Eventually it was acceptable - not excellent. The tile work was poor. Grout was never properly sealed and remains so. They have refused to do it properly. I will have to hire some competent tile man to do it. The vanities are particularly poor. Doors and drawers were adjusted several times, still not right. (They said it's the best they can do, if we wanted a good fit, we should have bought "custom vanities"). They broke an expensive light fixture during installation. They replaced it after WE pointed it out. Most of the mistakes we pointed out were corrected, but their attitude seemed to be "that's the way it's supposed to be". Schedule: They never gave us an overall schedule estimate. It took five months. Many times, they didn't show up when scheduled. Many times, they came when not expected. Most of the time, we had to call to find out what was planned that day. When the job was nearing completion, Unique used my credit card to charge the final payment without my knowledge or agreement. When I objected, they promised to issue a credit immediately. Delay after delay and they NEVER issued the credit. This is only a partial list of the quality difficulties. There are many more. On the positive side, MOST of the poor quality was eventually addressed. We did end up with very nice bathrooms. The management was easy to work with (except quality problems). The subs were courteous and helpful; some lacked competence. The question is - would I recommend them? Only if you hire an independent construction inspector. Charles S. read more

Someone drove their car through our garage; we also had some water damage in our kitchen. After speaking to several contractors we chose Unique Builders to handle the repairs & improvements. We couldn't have a made a better decision. The end result is beautiful, I have a new garage and a much improved kitchen. Of all the bids I received Unique was by far the most thorough. They did the extra things no one else even considered; making sure to repair the damage properly. Scott was a pleasure to work with and all the subcontractors he hired were professional, friendly & on time. I was greatly appreciated of these guys! I loved their work and it was a pleasure to meet with Steve and the construction management Shane. My main renovation was the garage apartment to get done, the house was built in 1950's! You can imagine what work needed on this antique! The stairs were not sturdy at all to climb.. Steve had these great idea's including mine, I was very pleased with the work and the plans that were drawn up! I was pleased as well on how professional this company was and how easy to get along with. They cleaned up all the mess and cleaned my mess with it! Very pleased and I will be using them with my next project. They aren't cheap, but the work is not handy man's work neither, top of the line. I will refer my friends any day! read more

We hired Steve to help create a design to remodel our kitchen, dining room, utility room and powder room. He had a lot of original ideas, and we enjoyed working with him. At the beginning we were told they would cover all cabinets with plastic, and then put up plastic on the openings to other rooms. For the demolition they did put up the plastic and it helped. But the plastic came down after 2 days and they did not cover anything after that. Many hours were spent cleaning. Quality * The new island panels are shrinking or shifting and leaving gaps of un-stained wood where the panels meet the raised sections. o They have been out twice in the last 6 weeks to re-stain these gaps. o My wife and I originally considered re-doing all cabinets and I can't imagine how horrid we would feel if we had. * Backsplash had many issues that needed to be re-done; not the same depth, medallions not at the same height, tile stops 1" before the top of electrical outlet. * To cut a hole inside the new island they used a reciprocating saw which just tore up the interior. o Their comment ... "no one will see it" * A wine fridge was going into the end of the new island. There was a lot of sawdust and wood parts on the floor and they said "No one will see it". * Downdraft installation: The cooktop has a downdraft blower that was pointed to blow out the back for the normal install along an exterior wall. Ours is in the island which should blow down. The day of the install I decided to read the installation instructions because bending duct work will reduce the flow and of course there are instructions on what to do for downdraft. So I left the installation instructions out and wanted to see how Unique would handle this. As I expected they dropped in the cooktop without rotating the blower. I then stopped them and showed them the instructions. o What if I hadn't shown them that? The downdraft would work but not nearly as efficient as it should. How often does this happen and no one catches it? Safety The island cooktop was changing from electric to gas. The plumber's helper was the only person to come out to install the cooktop and hookup the gas. When we got gas turned on you could really smell it. The burners worked but even after turning off the cooktop for a while you still smell gas so there is clearly a leak somewhere. The project manager said the main plumber would be out in a couple days to find/fix the leak. Well the plumbers helper came back and he does the soap test and says "no leak" then just leaves. Later that night the smell is very bad again and we haven't used the cooktop at all so we turn the gas back off. The project manager says the main plumber will be out in a couple days, but the plumber helper shows up again (déjà vu). Same thing, don't smell much gas and his soap test doesn't find anything, he says "no leak" and leaves. The project manager was here later that day and we did not smell gas while he was here. Again that night we smell gas again so I shut it off. I decided Unique Builders wasn't going to bring the right people to find this leak so I call a plumbing company and in 15 minutes had found the leak. They fix it and charged me a few hundred dollars. I'm annoyed at spending the money but happy that we can use our cooktop without gas leaks. I then e-mailed the project manager saying a plumber was just here and fixed the leak. The project manager asks me to scan/send him the invoice so that Unique could "make it right". As of now they haven't Good things: * The project manager was good to work with and directed us to a place where we could get a really good deal on the appliance package. * The project manager came by one evening to locate the gas shut-off valve for the island. He spent a couple hours there one evening and located the valve behind a cabinet. * Granite fabricator did really good work. The seams match really well. read more
