Union Rose is a very cool shop offering up a boutique-y collection of women's clothing, accessories, gifts and jewelery, all from Portland designers. In fact, a bunch of the designers are from the Montavilla hood (a fact I learned while participating in the First Friday scavenger hunt in this little up-and-coming strip). Union Rose also has a neat little token men's section and some very cute baby gear. It's truly just a little shotgun-setup store packed full of cool stuff. While the selection for guys is pretty limited (like most female-focused boutiques, the selection is fairly token), but there were some great shirts, a few of which I almost picked up. They also had some cool hand-silkscreened ties that caught my eye. But most of my time was spent hanging out chatting with the ladies working there while Hilary B did her shopping. She found plenty of things she wanted, so I can only assume the offerings for the ladies are quality. The people who run the store are super nice, and they offer a stellar spread for First Friday - prosecco, cookies, chocolates, etc... so us purse-holding husbands can have something to enjoy while we're standing in the back waiting for the boss to finish her shopping. Great addition to Montavilla (yeah, they've been here a year, so the addition is not so new) and a shop easily worth stopping in to when you're in the area. read more

I recently purchased a turquoise-white dandelion-imaged tie for my brother's birthday and he was blown away by how "awesome" it was. The owner of Union Rose is also a designer herself and currently has about 20-30 independent designers who sell their cool crafts at her boutique. If you're ever in the area, check this place out. Cute, cute cute. A great place to pop into after going to Tiny's cafe. This place is the definition of local business! They have beautiful and well priced handmade items and a lovely owner.They sell unique children's clothing, women's clothing, jewelry and knick-knacks. This is a great place to come for gifts for a wedding, birthday, babyshower, whatever really. I went in with my daughter the other day and found great stuff, I'm talking about adorable prints, quality fabric and original design dresses for children for around 20 dollars. Yay Union Rose! The owner is an incredibly talented designer whose creations are both classic and beautiful, yet comfortable and fashion-forward for all body sizes (dresses with inconspicuous pockets, thoughtful tailoring for curves, and customizations if desired, etc). She and her associate were genuinely kind, receptive and attentive to my curiosity and interests in finding good matches that were flattering for me. Out for a nice Sunday filled with brunch and killing time before the Montavilla Jazz Festival, I stumbled upon this cute boutique. I was warmly welcomed by Chelsea and was first drawn to the jewelry. Most of their brands are locally made, which is something I love. #supportlocal! After browsing the shop, I ended up with another black dress I didn't know I needed. But this dress was different. Local Christmas shopping in the Montavilla neighborhood. This storefront has a welcoming look to it when you enter. The sales person was wonderful and she looked like she enjoyed being there. They have everything from skirts, dresses, to t shirts and jewelry mixed in with scarves and even some wonderful skin lotion. The items are locally made. Ended up just buying a few stocking stuffers, including a bottle of lavender body lotion. It's upscale in pricing but they do have sales items as well. read more

This is the sweetest shop in Montavilla! I can always find a great dress for work or beautiful jewelry to perk up my outfit. Rita, is always incredibly helpful and knows exactly what will look great on my body! Today is the last day for their amazing sale on the Hubris label! Beware of poor customer service and the return policy at Union Rose. The short-ish story is that I was mis-informed about the return policy on sales items by a store clerk and owner Nicole Prevost would not honor what the clerk had told me. I purchased a gift for a friend on sale and was told that I could return it within 30 days for store credit as long as I had the receipt. I made sure I understood the policy because I know it's risky to buy clothes for other people. There were no signs explaining a special return policy on sales items, either by the sales rack or by the cash register. So I was surprised when the owner refused to allow me to return the dress that did not fit my friend. I wasn't asking for money back. I simply wanted my friend to have something from a local shop that she could enjoy instead of a dress that doesn't fit. It's likely that she would've found something else, and I would've paid MORE money to ensure that she got what she wanted. Instead, Nicole was firm about her policy and explained that it's stamped on the sales receipt. Guess what? Because I had the policy explained to me twice by the clerk on the day I purchased, I didn't go looking for the fine print on the back of the receipt. Nicole kept apologizing about her "shop girl's error," but that apology doesn't mean much if you're not going to back it up with an action to satisfy a customer. Was the shop girl in error? Sure, but local businesses thrive--or die--based on customer loyalty and word-of-mouth marketing. One of the reasons to buy local is that often local owners can be more flexible and provide better customer service than a corporate conglomerate. I like supporting local businesses, but from now on, I'll support other shops and so will the two friends who were with me today. We can find unique, locally made clothing elsewhere. In fact, try some of the shops on Foster Road. I hope owner Nicole Prevost learns a lesson: maintaining steadfast commitment to a policy when it means losing 3 customers isn't a smart business practice, especially if you're small and local. read more

This is a very cool store. My sister came to visit from Seattle and bought the cutest yet hot outfit there. She came upstairs and I said, "That is so cute, where did you get it?' She said, "That store that you told me about." I love the jewelry and I have a couple of great shirts from there that are so soft and comfy but hip looking. Such a pleasant surprise! I was walking out of yoga and popped in Union Rose and walked out with 2 skirts and a sweater. Ha! Score! The owner Nicole is such a warm sweet lady and she designed the sweater I fell in love with. As mentioned in previous posts, this store is local Portland designers which is such a relief from the standard mass produced products we're all so sick of looking at at the malls. Popped into Union Rose on a whim in search for a dress for a wedding I was attending. I was greeted immediately, the woman working picked out multiple dresses for me with my style, size, and event in mind. She helped me with sizing and fit and overall helped me to make a decision. I am thrilled with my purchase and satisfied with the customer service. My only deduction comes from the price. It's a bit spendy, I appreciate that the pieces are all hand made and unique, but it was a little bit more than what I was hoping to spend for the dress I purchased. read more
