Great experience! Took my son there for a haircut- Sharon, his barber, was so good with him! He is 4 years old and gets a little nervous. I could tell that she has kids, and got him to warm up. It was a great cut- We have been to several places... some good, some not as good. We were in and out quickly. Booked an appointment with L.B. and the difference in quality is astonishing. No attention to detail nor dedication. That was definitely the last time coming here. I have been in the process of changing my hair and beard style over the past few months, and decided to try Union to get a second set of eyes on what style might work best. I had a pretty bad experience, and the cut is not good. For $40, expected better. I asked for a simple clean up and beard trim, no major changes, but was open to suggestions from the barber. He proceeded to take a clipper to me and basically removed any shape that i had achieved with my previous stylist. 10 minute clipper cut and bead trim was the result. The barber ignored my instructions, and just buzzed me all over. Moreover, I asked him to trim the sides of my beard a bit more than the rest, and he proceed to take 15 seconds to take the entire beard down to a buzz. Also, the beard trim is uneven. Thankfully it will eventually grow out :( The barber was quite the snark, making comments like "returning my style to the 90's" Little did I know, that he was being serious. Moral of the story: Be very careful when "exploring" barbers based on yelp reviews. I won't be back. read more

I don't have hair, but my son does. Brought him here twice. 1st time he did not like it. He refused to go back for long time. Went back today because we are leaving town and his usual Floyd's barber is busy. This time it was busy. But only 15 minute wait. Barbara (I think) cut his hair and was WAY better. Actually better than his usual at Floyds. I sat in the waiting room, being entertained by the owner and a few of his non busy barbers, comparing who had more street cred. I was the only white dude, but had more street cred that the black barbers. Funny, but I grew up in the hood. Rare these days. Great experience, great cut. Lacks structure. Owner seems to have lost control to staff. 5 stars but for that. I own my own biz, so I know how important that is. read more

I started visiting UB for Mark The Barber, as he no longer works here, I don't feel like this place is worthy of it's previous 5-Star review. (He's at Alex Emilio now) There are very very few places I'll give a perfect 5-Star to. Union Barber comes in first place by far. The atmosphere is amazing! From the vintage barbers chairs to the tile floor, the place is seriously cool. But that's not even the kicker. Mark is hands down the best barber I've ever had! He is a magician with clippers. My boyfriend has gotten his hair cut at this barber a few times and I've gone with him most of the time. Atmosphere: very cool, quirky, unique and inviting. Staff: not overly friendly, not overtly "hipper than thou" - they will talk to you and not make you feel lame. While you wait, or as a customer, they'll give you a beer if you want one, from a cute old fashioned vending machine. Nice staff and a lot of barbers to choose from; conveniently located and fairly priced. Would suggest to male friends in the area (not sure if they do women's hair or not). read more

Took my 5 year old son in for a haircut & the stylist, Trinity, ended up nicking the back of his ear, the top of his ear & along his neck several times (with clippers). He's nervous during haircuts but he wasn't thrashing, although not completely still. When he started crying mid haircut I asked him why, she stated I nicked his ear, it happens. I didn't realize until after the cut was done the extent of the injuries. The rest of the haircut was pretty rough too, she was forcing the clippers roughly through his hair as he winced. I don't know what the deal was but she didn't seem comfortable cutting a child's hair & I wouldn't recommend anyone take their child to see her. She showed very little concern for his well being or express any regret for the injuries she caused. read more

Well, it's been quite some time since I wrote that first review. While Scott is no longer with us, I was able to experience several of the other very capable barbers there. I have settled on Sway as my new barber. He does a great job, as they all do, but he shapes and trims my beard and shaves my face exactly how I like. The other thing I like about Sway is that he's a perfectionist when it comes to the shave. He will not let me out of the chair until he can run his hand over my face and feel no stubble whatsoever. Sway is pretty popular and can be difficult to book with at times, but if you use their app to set your appointment you can usually find something available within a day or two at most. I still highly recommend the shop because everyone there is very friendly and welcoming, it's easy to book an appointment using their app and parking is a breeze in back. After my last review, they made a huge effort to make the shop recognizable from the back parking lot as well as the main entrance on 9 Mile. read more

I had a great introduction to the shop a few weeks before my first visit. The owner was in front of the shop talking to the foot traffic on 9 Mile. He was friendly and welcoming. The shop's interior looked great as well. I knew I'd give them a try. Soon after, I took my 2 year old for a haircut, which is not one of his favorite activities. The owner was very kind to my son. He talked to him and encouraged him throughout. If you've ever had to take a toddler for a haircut, you will appreciate how much this matters. I was offered a drink while I waited as well. Have been to this place maybe 5-6 times. Everything was fine until the new staff joined: Lauren and Sergio. My Saturday's appointment got cancelled (due to sickness of my barber), there was no chance for a haircut with someone else. Booked a new appointment the next day, Sunday at 4 PM. A snow storm delayed my drive 5 minutes, I called upfront to inform them. Then during the call, the two above mentioned staff members gave me each a telephone rant for about 3-4 minutes that that was unacceptable and what a terrible thing that was. The entrance/telephone guy (Sergio) seemed not to have understood that it was going to be only 5 minutes, and thought it was 15 minutes. Then at 4:02 PM they cancelled my 4 PM appointment. I arrived there at 4:05 PM, they were unable to present any apologies and were very aggressive. The place was almost empty, there was only 1 other client! I have been other times there and they have made me wait 15-20 minutes. I will never go back to that place. Terrible customer service. read more

I have been looking for a place in RO / Ferndale for a haircut for a while. I don't like appointments so I called to see if I could walk in and I could. I was offered water or a coke from a glass bottle. My barber was nice talkative and knew what he was doing. He did a great job, I told him make it look good and that's all he needed to know. This was a first visit for us as a recommendation on Facebook. We were told there was a fantastic lady by the name of Rachel, and I think we found a saint. My son has very thick and curly hair. The minute we walked it, the receptionist (Caitlin) was smiling and pleasant. She checked us in, and immediately offered us a beverage. Nice start for the visit. You can get in through the back door, so parking offers options in the back also. My son isn't exactly the best at washing and brushing the out of control fro he is so proud of. Patience was a outstanding virtue from the beginning of our hair debacle. We had come in with pink spray color in his hair, as today was pink out for cancer at the school. Rachel didn't even bat an eyelash, and when she was finished washing, you wouldn't even know it was there to begin with. The place is surprisingly clean, and the decor is fabulous. I'm quite sure we have found a regular hangout. I appreciated the fact to that she spoke to my son, as some just pretend he isn't there. Great referral. Will definitely return. Thank you. read more
