Absolutely do not recommend. I was back home for the holidays and was looking for a haircut before New Years Eve. Found this place which looked great but the results were horrible. Asked for a mid drop fade and the barber didn't fade the back whatsoever. They left a straight line way higher than where it should be as you can see in the image attached. I wasn't shown the final cut once the barber was done as they usually do so unfortunately I didn't see this until I got home. Will definitely not go back. Edit: I went in to the Birmingham MI location, Dec. 30th at 4:30PM EST. Since it was my first time the appointment was made when I walked in. Three times in a row I had a scheduled appointment only to find out that Ashley was running late. First time was 20 minutes late, second time was 30 minutes late and the final appointment she was was 45 minutes behind schedule. Is she double booking? Sleeping late? I have no idea, but every appointment has been a disappointment, I will go elsewhere for now on. She obviously doesn't respect my time, NS WHAT A SHAME, because I had been going there for years in Ferndale before I moved and this nonsense started at their Birmingham location. read more

Located off busy Maple in the middle of Birmingham. Limited street pay parking, pay garages within medium walking distance. Inside is a large bright room with a large waiting area (and chairs are overly worn, the single bad spot of this review). Large and roomy haircut stations. The staff is great. They provide soda pop and beer. Decent prices for the haircut, and they provide a lot of service for the money. read more

I've been coming here since I moved to Birmingham from California in 2021. I've been working with Miguel since then. He is fantastic, has a serious attention to detail, and always goes above and beyond. Not to mention he is a great guy and has given me lots of advice on places to check out in Oakland County. I will say, the fact that they only offer beer or soda now is a bit off-putting. I don't drink soda and I'm not going to have a beer at 11AM in the morning. Perhaps I have to book later appointments? The tag line is haircuts, hot shaves and dirty jokes but no more dirty jokes after a sensitive customer complained. The shop is located in Downtown Birmingham and is a real barber shop -- not a salon that does a man's hair. It offers good product for sale as well. Union barber is clean, instantly made me feel comfortable, and they offer water, pop or beer when you come in. Facility aside, the barbers are what make the shop truly outstanding. Gina is amazing. Her skills, of course, are excellent. She takes the time to learn what her customers want and executes (with appropriate suggestions). She has an engaging personality and makes the experience fun. I highly recommend her to young and old (I'm on the older side of that spectrum). She also does a great beard trim. Get to Union Barber, relax and have Gina give you the best cut ever!! read more

I had my hair cut today by Jordan at Union Barber. GREAT EXPERIENCE. !!!! I'm a retired hairstylist/colorist. I worked in Chicago on Michigan ave . Was a salon owner 24 years after that He is a true professional. I usually cut my own hair. He did an amazing job . He listened to my requests, and delivered results ! Was great talking with him too. Shortly after moving to Detroit, I was looking for a barber. I found Union Barber Shop on Nine Mile in Ferndale. The staff was most hospitable and welcoming when I entered the barbershop. I waited to be invited to a chair with an available barber. The barber showed up, but he seemingly found it difficult to understand how I wanted him to cut my hair. He had an idea of how to cut my hair but grew increasingly frustrated with my request. There was some sidebar chatting between workers and the barber before he got back to cutting my hair. The exchanges continued until the barber decided he was done. He stopped, removed the cape around my neck, and walked away. Unaccustomed to this behavior in a barbershop, I went to the cash register. No one was there, and I waited for someone to show up and pay my bill. I found my time at the register awkward; it was as if the establishment did not want me to pay. The awkward part is that no words were exchanged (i.e., I am sorry for what happened, thank you for coming in, have a good day). I realize the exchange I encountered at the barbershop may be unique for me, but I thought it worth sharing with you. Disappointing. They don't close at 8:00 pm. They close at 7:38 pm. I'm bald and have a short cropped beard. I would guess my time in the chair to be 20 mins max. 4 barbers standing around with one working. I guess times are good for the barber business these days especially at $35 bucks a pop because I was turned away tonight for showing up and assuming I could get a haircut before their published closing time of 8:00 pm. After spending almost $40 on a haircut for my son, I ended up having to spend another $35 at a different barber to try and fix what was given at Union. The other barber said "that happens a lot when you go to Great Clips" I just let him think that's where we went. read more

Haircut was not high quality. Hard to pinpoint what it is but overall quality of cut, attention to details, and communication on what you want felt more like $15 Supercuts than a $50 high end place. They are priced in the middle... so I guess now you know which way they fall. read more

I can't thank Jordan enough for the beard trim! I had been looking for a barber that would get it right and I'm pleased to say that the search is now over. He will listen to your requests and take his time to make sure it's done right. First of all, my appointment was 5:30 and he was ready on time (no need to wait). He was very friendly and took all necessary precautions (due to covid) before getting started. He asked me what I wanted to do to my beard at first and every now and then would stop to ask if the length was ok or if I wanted a bit more trimmed down. This was great because last time I tried a new barber they cut my beard WAY shorter than I had asked for and it took forever to grow back. In conclusion, if you want a good beard trim, great attention and fair prices, Union Barber is the place to go! (Don't forget to book with Jordan!) read more

If you're looking for a haircut in the Ferndale/RO/Bham area, look no further. My husband starting going to Union after a couple of botched tapers (fades) at some of the other local barber shops I won't mention (or maybe I will). He started off at the original location in Ferndale, alternating between Macie and Sergio. Both absolutely top-notch barbers serving up a perfectionist-level cut, great conversation, and a clean shop. What more could you want? After Sergio moved to the new Bham location, the proximity made it even easier and he's been seeing him on a monthly basis ever since. He's tried Baus, Det Barber, Chop Shop, etc. ... nothing competes with Sergio's cuts. If you're looking for a new barber for a proper cut, look no further. If there's one complaint, it's the parking situation in Birmingham. Tip: park in the deck near Merrill and it's a short few block walk to UB (and the first 2 hours are free). read more

Received my haircut from Rhonda several time and I she is great. Sometimes I'm not sure of the cut I'm looking for however no matter what I decide on she is able to provide a consistent and precise cut and makes me want to come back each time. That was the last time I'll go to this location. The stylist I had didn't listen to me at all with my hair or beard trim, he just did whatever he wanted. When he turned me around in the chair to see his work I didn't even know what to say- how do you tell someone they did the worst job possible? I walked in after just having my hair cut and colored someplace else. I asked if they cut women's hair. They told me it depends on what I needed. I said I just had my hair done and it was uneven. The receptionist was sweet and asked if I had called the salon. I told her that this was the stylist's attempt to fix my hair & I won't be going back. She made me an appointment with LB. Wow! I told LB what I wanted and she looked at my hair and told me how my former stylist cut my hair wrong. She explained how it wound up being so uneven. She proceeded to explain what she was doing to fix my hair. 1/2 hour later, it looked so much better. Closer to what I wanted. She didn't even charge me very much. I am so grateful that walking into a barbershop on a Saturday ended up paying off. I will definitely return when it's time for my next haircut. This place in Birmingham is absolute garbage. I asked for a a skin fade up to a 3 on the sides and to keep it short up top. Pretty much shaved my head, no fade, kept me in the chair for 45 minutes. Worst haircut I've ever gotten. Somehow managed to keep the hair on the back of my head long?? Not really sure how this place hired this person. If you go here you might as well burn $25. I almost walked out without paying. I mean this place is a joke. Way better barber shops within walking distance. 0/10 go somewhere else. read more

There are a few barbershops in town, but this one is definitely my go-to. I work 9:30-5:30 just down the street, so I'm able to pop in here before work, which is super convenient. All the barbers there are great, especially Lauren. She takes a lot of pride in her work and will take the time to make sure you are going to be happy with your cut. read more
