I visited on a slow Saturday. inside is a small sitting area with hard old fashioned school type chairs and a selection of magazines. And a row of old fashioned barber chairs with the hand pumps, and a sales counter and shelves of products. They are trying hard for the 'old fashioned' and dark wood look. They use modern online reservations and point of sale tablet. Staff was nice, my barber was nice, good haircut. Parking is an issue, very limited Woodward parking otherwise parking down a long side street. read more

I've been to Detroit Barbers in Ferndale a couple of times (both pre-pandemic and mid-pandemic) and all experiences have been fantastic. The team makes the whole process seamless, from making an appointment to the procedure once you arrive, and finally (and perhaps most importantly) the quality of the cut you receive. I can personally only speak to the straight hair cut and the beard trim, but the barber shop definitely has a diverse range of regulars. The haircuts tend to fall on the expensive side, but you get a high quality service at the end of the day and for me, it's worth it. During COVID-19, you can expect to wear a mask at all times during your visit to the barber shop, have your temperature screened, and your barber will disinfect all equipment and use hand sanitizer before your haircut (while wearing a mask). Personally, I'm really glad to see that the business is adhering to guidelines very well and keeping safety high on their priorities! Overall, I'd say this is a great spot to get your haircut in Michigan, it's not cheap, but definitely worth it. read more

Possibly one of the worst haircuts my son and husband have received. He tried to explain several times what he wanted but she must also have a hearing problem. So disappointed!! The last 2x my bf went he didn't get what he asked for. Hair/beard was trimmed way too short. This used to be a great place. What happened?

Pretty unfortunate and rushed experience that led to my beard being hacked up. I left with hair all over my face and neck, my neckline not trimmed and a top beard line that no longer matches. While we all have different expectations for what our trip to the barber should be and feel like, this didn't live up to mine. The ambience in the barbershop pictured looks nice and classic. I was notified that my shop was upstairs in a room that looked nothing like is pictured, not well kept, with multiple chairs sharing a single headrest. It seems like I was sent to the junior varsity field without warning. My beard trim was pretty butchered, uneven, and so incredibly rushed. Without asking he shaved my top line an 1/2 inch deep on one side and didn't touch the other. It's clearly uneven and now I'm forced to shave a part of my face I was growing out just so it will match. I didn't want it trimmed at all but he gouged it before I could say something. I take great care of my beard and my first trip to the barber since moving to Michigan, at a place where I thought could care for it, resulted in months of work undone. With all that said, I came here because of their affiliation with their beard care products, and was looking to refill my almost depleted inventory of shampoo, butter and wax. I come here exclusively now since Detroit Barbershop is so incredible. The place has that old school barber feel which I love. But the barbers are what makes this place so great. The experience just walking through the door is fantastic. Everyone is welcoming and friendly. When you are getting your hair cut or beard trimmed there's some great conversations that can take over the shop. Which just feels like you're hanging out with some friends. Barber recommendation: I haven't experienced everyone in the shop but quickly found Austin. I usually go in for a haircut and beard trim. Being a full-time content creator, people know me for my beard so I am VERY careful with trusting people with it. I have total confidence in Austin's work both with my hair and beard. Second time at Detroit Barbers. First time was in Corktown, haircut went well (good, not great), decided to try Ferndale this time. Very happy I did. Tahj did an amazing job with my pompadour-style haircut, probably the best haircut and fade I've ever received. He listened to what I wanted, looked at a couple pictures to see what I've liked in the past so he'd have an idea of what I was going for, told him about a couple recent bad haircuts, and then he took it from there. He knows his stuff and truly cares about his work. He started with the hard-part and fade, both looked great from the start. Then he shaped the haircut to the hairstyle and to my head, brushing it along the way to make sure it was going to set right. When I thought he was about done, he then went back to the fade to blend it expertly with several different techniques and tools; I was very impressed. It was already a good fade, but this next go-round took it to the next level. He styled my hair just like I'd showed him in the pictures and then he did some last finishing touches to ensure that everything laid right and looked good all-around. Huge fan of this place. Laid back, clean, friendly and talented staff who have always done a great job with my hair. I moved back from AZ recently and there was a great selection of barbers out west. The place looked pretty cool, so decided to give it a try. Probably one of the worse haircuts I've gotten. Barely took anything off and just ended up being asymmetrical. They don't shave your neck with a razor (if that's something your normally expect) and I was covered in hair after I walked out. I took my 11 year old son to the downtown Plymouth shop today for a hair cut, and Emmanuel hacked his hair!! he left crying his eyes out the whole way home! the sides are all uneven and it's extremely choppy looking!! my poor son will only wear hats now. he had nice long hair, and now it's all uneven and looks terrible!! and to top it off, they charged me $55 for his hair cut!!! my son don't even want to go to school tomorrow because of his terrible haircut!! The staff and clients were masked up, temperature checked, and disinfected. My appointment was on-schedule and Stanley was great. I came in an asked for a 0-1-2 fade on the sides and a trim on top. The girl that cut my hair was not attentive and seemed to be concerned with other people than my hair. I even asked her to fix the top after she was "done" because I didn't like how it looked and was not given a chance to look at the sides and back. The fade is not a fade and the back of my head is uneven. I felt like she was taking going through the motions with my cut and at the end rushed me out. First thing, they're scrupulous about masks and physical distancing (Brett, who cut my hair, greeted me with an elbow bump). He got rid of the mullet and sideburns I was rocking in efficient fashion and was an engaging guy to talk with. Unlike my previous stylist, Brett had a good idea of how to cut a guy's hair-- I came away looking reasonably distinguished. All for just $30. I'll be back! read more

Was not given the haircut I asked for. I found both front and 3/4 profile pics of the exact cut I wanted. I showed the stylist the pics and he disregarded what I asked for. I was given the same standard cut as every other dude walking down the street...a $15 cut which cost me $30. I can't comment on all the stylists, but I won't return to this shop. read more

This place is awesome! The vibe, the design, the staff and services and their product line - all spectacular. For whatever reason, probably because it makes me feel younger lol - I love a hipster, bearded, Brooklynesque barber and that's what you're getting here. Well, the women aren't bearded, but they're hipster and awesome. Alex cut my hair and he did exactly what I'd asked for but somehow gave me an even better cut than I'd envisioned. Been using the dry clay product for a few days and will stock up before I leave Detroit. I love it! This place rocked and I'd go back in a second. The ONLY thing I'd suggest they look at is their website...it's great and easy to navigate and make an appt, but in order to make an appointment, you have to choose a barber, but there's no staff page where you can get a look at each person and a sense of their style and maybe background/training. read more
