But three problems my wife and I have…read moreencountered in last five years: 1) their online banking website works fine but only if you can get into it - basically, i have to re-enroll with a phone call every six months because they change their security protocols and my password doesn't work anymore. 2) my wife's debit card number has been stolen at least twice - so here their security is bad and I'm not sure i would debit through them. 3) they no longer provide free checking services - you have to buy every check. So if i were starting out in Addison County in 2025, I would carefully check what other banks have to offer before signing with them. In all other respects we feel well served.

This was my first experience working with a smaller regional bank, and it has been very different from what I'm used to. When I was buying a business in Vermont, I took a loan through National Bank of Middlebury. As an out-of-state buyer, I relied on local recommendations and expected a smooth process. However, the loan application was slow and grueling, taking much longer than I had anticipated. A few years later, I applied for another business loan, and it took only two weeks to complete the entire process -- a stark contrast to my experience with NBM. In addition to this, I've experienced repeated delays with ACH payments and outbound transfers. Transfers into NBM process quickly, but transfers out are often significantly slower than what I've experienced with larger institutions -- often taking up to two weeks. Most recently, after selling my home, a payment issued through NBM still hasn't cleared a week later. By comparison, I've moved similarly large sums from major banks, and the funds were available the next business day. Even after depositing the NBM payment into my non-NBM account, I deposited a similar sum, and it cleared within 24 hours. One other significant issue has been the bank's outdated security measures, which feel archaic compared to what I've experienced with other banks. This has made certain processes more difficult than they should be, especially when dealing with electronic transactions or interbank transfers. While I understand that many long-time local customers may be satisfied with NBM's services, my experience has been frustrating, especially when compared to the speed and efficiency of larger institutions. Based on my experience, I would not choose a small regional bank again.

The manager has gone out of her way to help me transfer ownership on the account, answer questions, keep in touch on paperwork or issues. I think that is pretty cool since our group's petty cash adds only to a few bucks a month. No outrageous fees either! I dig the NSB pig flying logo too. PTC just recently videoed them do acts of kindness of paying for people's groceries at Hannaford. They want to show they are a bank with a heart. While yes it was nice, they should of used the money to waive their new fees for at least the month of December if they wanted to do something nice for Christmas.
