This is a surprisingly well maintained range as well and is almost always open. I was actually taught how to shoot an arrow here, and it made my life in high school gym must less miserable. You can make reservations to insure that the place will be free, but I have never seen it any other way. Just to be safe, call or stop by the ranger station. (2) They have a HUGE remote control air field. I know this sounds incredibly dorky, but I think it's awesome that the St. Louis County Parks System has created a park for people that build remote control airplanes and who want to fly them. My grandpa was a huge fan of remote control airplanes and he spent many many years flying the planes he built at this field. I went with him many times and it was always a blast. It's also a great place to just watch the old men and young kids fly their remote control planes...no seriously, it's entertaining. Just a forewarning: they often have a ton of loose golf balls on the field from people practicing their drives in the open space. Don't fall on any of them...I've actually seen this happen. It's a nice park to have a picnic, fly a kite, or just hang out. There's not a lot of action going on, but sometimes open space is nice. I have a soft spot for this park and always will.

There are plenty of gazebos with bench tables and the bathrooms are the nicest park bathrooms I've ever used! Yes, automatic flush toilets and running water. They're even heated with auto lights in the cold winter months. I actually came here to hike for the first time last week. Was very satisfied, and it was well…read moreworth the drive from Illinois to come here. So why am I docking it a star? Before coming here I did research on what are the recommended trails to hike, and what is popular with most people. The Lone Wolf and the River Scene trails were the top two, I found out. So they were at the top of my priority list. When I got to the park, I stopped in the Visitors Center (or park office?) to get a map. I did the Lone Wolf trail first, since it was the longest and supposedly the most grueling of the two. It was cool with all the lookout views and some of the decaying structures (there's a story that goes with that). But the part that annoyed me was how the trails were poorly marked. The River Scene Trail was red and the Lone Wolf trail was yellow. I knew they closed off a section of the River Scene trail due to erosion. But the map I saw online (at the park's website) and the map the park ranger gave me had two differently marked routes, which sparked a lot of confusion in me. I don't know why I got my feathers ruffled on that, but yeah. I hope they fix that section soon, or by next year. But I'll still return to check out some of the other trails!

This included a 1-hour canoe rental for two from Big Muddy Adventures. I should start by saying that I was impressed that this park is so accessible to St. Louis City and County residents (near 141 and 44). It is well-maintained with a playground, walking paths, bathrooms (clean and well-stocked), a large covered shelter with picnic tables and a lovely lake with kayak/canoe rentals. Fishing is allowed. It was a hot day, but we enjoyed sitting in the shade, canoeing around the little lake and later seeing the sun set over the lake. I would like to return again and walk around the lake with our dog and then perhaps have a picnic on one of the covered picnic tables with a view of the lake.

It's a great distance to get some steps in, and if you want to continue your steps, you can head across Marshall near the water. It's clean, lots of wildlife, and a really lovely spot. I believe they also have the option of renting kayaks to go on the lake. If you're the outdoorsy type, it's worth checking out! Great spot to get together with friends and family.

We went on a Sunday and there weren't many people using the trail which was also nice. The path is easy to follow and we walked about 1.5 miles or so. I liked that they have information centers around the park and the walking path is on the outside of all the activities so I can imagine during the ball season you can enjoy the game from your walk as well. They do have a very cool veterans memorial here as well.

I'm a pretty good fisherman, but not that good. This park has an online website. Someone should and could have taken the time to post that info so that myself and others would know not to go there for fishing. Also, does the park open at 7:00 A.M., 8:00 A.M., or 4:00 A.M.? St. Louis, we need to talk about Suson Park. Because how is this hidden gem just sitting in South…read moreCounty and people aren't talking about it more? Suson Park is basically a little farm hiding inside a county park AND it's FREE. You can walk around and see cows, horses, goats, pigs, chickens, ducks and other farm animals. St. Louis County actually describes it as a working animal farm, and the barn is open to the public. And there's some seriously good St. Louis history here. The county bought the original property in 1962 from Sidney Salomon Jr., who was a major figure in St. Louis sports history. He owned the original Sportsman's Park and later the St. Louis Arena and became the first owner of the St. Louis Blues. Even better: Suson is a combination of the names of his children, Susan and Sonny. The park opened to the public in 1964, and today you've got the animal farm, fishing lakes, walking paths, playgrounds and picnic areas. So basically, you can spend an afternoon hanging out with a goat, watching a pig do absolutely nothing, saying hello to a cow and pretending you're on a farm vacation, all without leaving St. Louis County. And did I mention FREE? This is exactly the kind of place I mean when I say St. Louis has hidden gems.
