But the culture is toxic in ways that took me a while to fully see. Staff who are married or in relationships openly engage in inappropriate behavior with members. That's the baseline here. What's not tolerated is being a serious, independent athlete with your own voice. I had ideas for the gym regarding gear, content, improvements, that were taken and pitched by others as their own. No credit, no acknowledgment. Your place here is determined by how compliant you are, not how hard you work or how talented you are. Speak up, and you're out. Most importantly: I would not send any young girl here. I raised concerns about staff behavior toward young female members and was removed for it. If a gym's response to someone speaking up about safety is to silence them, that is not a safe environment. I came here to train and compete. I left because I refused to stay silent. If you're a serious athlete, especially a young woman, you deserve better than this.

John Bassford and Chris Garner are incredible at the sport itself but also possess a seemingly endless supply of energy, patience, and eye for detail. They will not coddle you, but they also will not make you feel stupid as you learn. And learning is what they want you to do. It is hands on, you will work with others in the class respectfully, they insure that. There is a limit anyone can learn simply practicing alone or with someone who will not challenge them. This is not something you need to take into consideration at Undisputed. If you want to improve you will have to suffer the pain education brings with it. Undisputed understands this. They will not antagonize this inevitability. Any rivalry that springs into being from sparring is kept amicable. For those with lousy vocabularies this means respectful, friendly, maybe even fun. All skill levels are embraced and all are welcome. It is a rare community, a real community, a place where you become part of something greater and are free to roam and lift weights or tap into the dynamic teachers who are there. Finally, Cassie worked with me on payment plans and proved that not all gyms are rigidly fixed on taking your money. She was accomodating and fair. I do not know any other gyms that can be said about.

Even if you move to another city or can no longer attend, they continue charging you--no exceptions. Worse still, your payments don't stop after the 12-month contract ends. They automatically switch to a month-to-month charge until you submit a written cancellation request. I couldn't attend after just 3 or 4 months, and today, I realized they've been charging me for an entire extra year beyond my original contract--just because I never sent an official cancellation letter. Make sure to read the fine print carefully before signing up! Otherwise, you might end up paying far more than you expected.

Shortly after I signed up, I accepted a role in my company that requires frequent travel. Since I won't be using the gym often I call to cancel and was told that that would be another four hundred dollars. Them not giving me a contract of what I signed up for is horrible enough. I will use this gym maybe twelve times throughout the rest of my two year contract. I'm not looking forward to walking into this place. Save yourself the burden of feeling forced to go here due to money and just pick a different gym.

Only knocks are the slightly salesy moments, my friend was told she needed to buy wraps with no clear heads up or pricing, and we got two different answers on drop in fees, which felt a bit inconsistent. After some confusion, she became instantly confrontational saying: "Wait, but should you even be in the women's locker room?" Me: "Yes, that's the one I always use." "But do you have a vagina?" She said, bluntly, for all to hear. I was polite, tried to defuse and answered all her questions to the best of my ability. I was born nonbinary, believe it or not. Yes I have a vagina, also other things though, etc. Then she decided to get her manager after I informed her I didn't care and would use whichever bathroom she wanted me to. Or whichever had the shorter line to make it logical. During my chat with her manager, Katie would occasionally chime in: "We just can't have a dude stand pissin' in the women's room." and other classic anti-trans litanies. Frankly, there aren't any urinals in the women's, and how a person chooses to pee in stalls is solely the business of the occupant. I tuned her out to the best of my ability. The manager then got her husband and he was actually super cool about it. He said to just use whichever bathroom I was more comfortable using. Thank you sir, if you're reading this. About a week later (today), I received a call that my jewelery had been found. I had already decided before I entered that I was going to cash out my juice card and cancel my membership. Katie was the only one working and became quite nasty when I asked for a cancelation. She kept repeating how I was lucky she saved my earring for me, and if I had something to say then I should say it. I responded that I prefer writing, it's less dramatic. Mentally I added, it is also less easy to overhear. I actually tried to spare her in the report to the best of my ability, and I confess that her little verbal jabs and petty comments distracted me enough I forgot to write a couple things on my reason for canceling: Legally, yes I am required to conform to the F symbol on my driver's license. I would also prefer to not be interrogated about my genitalia in public, at a place I have faithfully paid to have use of for over two years. There are much less inflammatory ways to have dealt with that situation. She picked a fight and made it personal when it very much didn't need to be.
