My betta fish has a tumor that had been growing for 6 months and he suddenly stopped eating, so I knew it was time for him to go, but I wanted him to go as peacefully as possible. I called Underwater Enviornments and they carry a sedative they use for koi fish. I was able to euthanize my fish with minimal distress to him. While we were at the shop, we admired their fish. The fish are healthy and lively. The water is clean and they are all given sufficient dpace to swim. There are some really gorgeous coloration and varieties. I though the pricing for these fish was much more affordable compared to pricing I've seen elsewhere for this quality. Also, despite being winter, the pond plants were lush and beautiful. They carry some uncommon aquatic plants that others sometimes carry but the size of these plants and health is way higher. read more

I love this place yet hate it at the same time. How is that possible you ask? Well they are my go to place for when I need any supplies for my little backyard fish pond. They have a ton of beautiful fish including koi that clearly are very well taken care of in clean environments. They have a ton of great pond plants that are healthy and decently priced. The people that work there are very knowledgeable and helpful. They have all sorts of supplies such as pond soil for the plants, treatments for water...pretty much anything you need. I can't say I have ever been there and not found pretty much what I needed. So why the hate you ask? Because I will go in almost every single time with one thing in mind that I want to buy and end up leaving with waaaaaaay more than I originally planned. OMG...Every.Single.Time. So I guess it's kind of a compliment? Not for my wallet... but they do have great stuff. The only negative I would say is that there is only space for a couple of cars at a time in front of the business for parking. Underwater Environments is by far the most knowledgable business I have found. I have never had a bad experience here over the years and have dealt with different people. Scott's knowledge is unparalleled. Our HOA has had two different pond vendors. Both made regrettable mistakes that no one in their business should have made, and that any layman could see were an issue. Scott was willing to be a consultant and evaluate our issues. He came up with some very common sense conclusions and fixes that our current pond vendor could employ. Thanks to his expertise things are back on track. If not for him our koi would still be breathing ground lava rock thanks to a bad pump room setup. Sometimes when you talk to someone you just get a feeling for how much they know their business and Scott is far more knowledgeable than any other person in the pond field I've ever met. The nice gent told me he goes to Japan and brings the Koi back. So how does Koi deal with jetlag? They didn't hop on the great Pacific current and swim their little hearts to America? Well they all look healthy and happy. The shop has a very nice set up for the Koi. Small Koi smaller than your hand to Koi the length of your forearm. They also have lily pads and flowers. We just purchased a home in Ramona with a stocked koi pond. Unfortunately, our pond was hit by a haron and we lost several of our fish. We stumbled upon this place while trying to locate another koi fish store. I'm so happy we ended up here. We were blown away by the variety of koi and plants they carry. We are from Hemet which is in the riverside county area. Came out for some aquatic plants and to check out the fish, no specific intent to get koi on this trip just plants. They had a large selection of koi in several tanks, rows of them (large and small). A variety of aquatic plants as well. I found one I really really liked, to me it was a very cool pattern. But I am new in this koi fish thing. I've been to various aquarium stores for fresh water and for salt over the years. This is the first store I've been to dedicated to pond stuff but so far I am definitely planning to return for fish / plant needs. My new recirculating rock pond was finished and looked great. Then the gardeners mowed the lawn and got grass in the pond. The next day the beautiful clear water turned green. Needed some algae inhibitor. These people were recommended by another business in my area. The store is tres cool -- various koi ponds and lush landscaping and rock formations on a very rural section of Rancho Santa Fe Road. Took Leucadia Blvd to RSF Rd and it was a great drive. The guy gave me some white blocks of copper something or other, that you place in the pond and it very slowly dissolves (over a month) and gets rid of green stuff. Unfortunately he said it would work best if the pond is drained, cleaned and then the stuff in placed in the water, so more landscaper expense. But at least I will once again have a beautiful, crystal clear pond. read more

Just discovered this place and it was well worth the drive from San Diego.The Koi selection is huge and there are fish of every size. The attendant (or, possibly owner) was amazing. She educated us, gave us advise, and didn't mind working hard to scoop up the specific fishes we wanted. They also have an impressive selection of underwater plants. She gave our 6 year old a quick botany lesson. After buying our fish and plants, she led us over to the goat enclosure, where there were newborn goats. Great experience! read more

Underwater Environments is often called out to our home to help maintain our waterfall / pond and to make basic repairs to light fixtures, pumps etc. We've had numerous companies come out over the years but these guys are the ones that we've consistently used. Amazingly, they have stayed very busy despite this down economy so don't expect same day or next day service. In fact, this last time we used them it took them awhile to get something scheduled. For pond cleaning and maintenance, they are reliable and provide great service. I'd recommend Underwater Environments for pond maintenance and basic repairs. They also have a pretty good plant selection too if you're looking to purchase water lilies or other pond plants. Plus I love the nursery they are next to and the little olive oil shop. I've purchased a number of fish here. Good QUALITY koi. ... and I trust them. They are on the pricey side. But what can you expect from A grade Japanese imports. Stop by for a visit. The place is large. The koi are all outside in a garden like atmosphere. I've picked up beautiful benigoi, kumonryu, chagoi, soragoi, kohaku, asagi's, shisui, and budo goromo's to name a few.. And they're all thriving and getting huge in my pond at home. 4 Woofs.. I'm a fan.. Catch them on a good day and you'll usually get a nice discount... I just want to say my husband and I have been loyal customers for many years and you could not ask for a better group of people with an incredible knowledge and passion for what they do and offer to their community. I especially take issue with the slanderous and pathetic review Natalie left. We have been at this establishment many times when parents like Natalie let their kids run around unsupervised and create havoc. Its incredible that there are signs all over unfortunately that say do not throw rocks in the pond. I assume that is for undisciplined brats like yours Natalie! Stopped in this past Sunday to buy an underwater plant. In the realm of pond customers me and my small container pond probably made me a small fish on the spending scale, but that did not change the high level of customer service we received. The attendant took the time to explain each of the one gallon plants we were interested in, and let us know the best environment for each of them to thrive in. We enjoyed learning more about their plant selection and seeing all the beautiful koi that they had. I have bought pond fish from here before and their fish have always been healthy and beautiful. This is the first time I've had them perform pond maintenance and trouble shooting.These guys are wonderful! Jeremiah and Scott came out right away. They quickly cleaned my pond and waterfall, They found a small "leak" where the water was trickling over the edge of the liner and checked the arrangement of all the rocks and plants. Jeremiah removed the water pump and checked the outlet to make sure it was free of tree roots and debris. I felt they did a thorough job of pond maintenance and were careful to clean up before they left. Their prices are very reasonable. I highly recommend Underwater Environments. read more

Grumpy woman, I'm guessing she was the owner, barked at us, because we had the gall to step over a 18" high wood gate to come onto her businesses property. There were no signs, and with a maze of this gates, it wasn't clear how to enter the business. Judging from her reaction and our brief conversation, it sounds like this happens all the time. PERHAPS YOU SHOULD PUT UP A SIGN DIRECTING PEOPLE WHERE TO GO??? Billed twice for more hours than actually provided. Signed up for monthly Pond maintenance service but no one showed up. After calling again, I was told I fell through the cracks and would be put back on the schedule. Company did a great job with installing and making a pond net cover but neglected pond and stream maintenance. Was told that the pond skimmer was cleaned as part of service but found debris in skimmer later the same day service was provided. Was told a spill over leak was found and corrected only to find out two days later that a major leak was still there caused by overgrown plants and roots not removed from the inside liner, (the very service I was billed for)! Then on top of everything, I get rudeness and attitude from the lady who answers the phone and after adjusting my bill, I said "please cancel our service". She responded, "that's OK we were not planning on coming back out there anyway"! I replied "What did you say" and she hung up... read more
