In what seems to be a bad time for comic book readers living in Las Vegas; Velvet Underground shows us that there is still hope for locals and tourists. Upon entering this store located one cant help but to feel that theyve discovered lost treasure. I have shopped at many comic book stores in my time in living here, and I have to say this is my all time favorite. Out of the main places that Ive shopped this place is the only one still in business, and theres good reason for it! The stores that I review will be reviewed in service, inventory aesthetics, and value.
Service - The place looks great, but hows the service? TERRIFIC!!! The owner is one of the most friendly down to earth guys you will meet. Hes very helpful in pointing you in the right direction, even going out of his way to help you dig through back issues to find what you need which from my experience with other shops in Vegas is very rare.
The owner is a fellow collector and he looks out for us. I have witnessed first hand employees pulling damaged books from their shipments because they wants the inventory in the best condition for customers. THIS is keeping the customer in mind when it appears almost ever other book store in town just sells you whatever they have regardless of condition and at the cover price (why pay 4 bucks for a book that has bent corners?).
One thing of note. The place only accepts cash so make sure you bring money with you when going down there. This is a good thing as I believe you should only spend what you have! =)
Inventory - This bookstore advertises over 20,000 back issues. When you walk into the store youll see that they definately are not lying. The owner knows his titles and keeps a good stock on what is a good seller. I remember running around town for back issues of The Umbrella Academy, and NO ONE had the ones I needed except for this store.
Aesthetics - Velvet Underground is packed full of all kinds of comics and memorabilia. Books are piled into cabinets, shelfs, and are even displayed on the walls; I say walls because there is literally books everywhere you look! The store itself has so many new and old items. On top of all that theres a drumset in the back, making it look like the comic book basement/bat cave you've always wanted.
Value - Economy is hurting your comic addiction? Velvet Underground is the solution. This place offers not only the best condition comics, but a free bag and board with each purchase. This is great! All the other stores I know off charge .15-.25 cents per bag and board. Someone who averages around 20-30 comics a month. Im saying almost 8 dollars in supplies; thats an extra 2-3 comics a month!
On top of that Velvet Underground offers a great pull list service. If you join their pull list service you get 10% off the cover price. Comparing this to other stores, the best I found was 15% towards back issues only. Like the bag and board this is a HUGE lift off my pocket. Personally I average around 100 dollars a month on comic books. With a 10% off discount for having a pull list plus free bag and board just because, I save an extra 15 dollars that I can put towards other things. Yay for me!
Conclusion - So your a collector, and you want great books in good condition? You want to save money? Then I recommend Velvet Underground to you. Enough of what I think, give the place a visit and see for yourself. read more
