If a Japanese restaurant bills itself as a "donburi specialist," and it's packed with Asian diners, that's a positive sign, isn't it, that the food's pretty special? Well, you'd be a fool to think otherwise because Uncle Don delivers. This place had been on our restaurant radar for a while so we decided it was now or November. Being a fan of Unagi, my choice was simple: the Grilled Unagi Don, fresh water eel with steamed rice and scrambled free range egg -$30. There was plenty of plump, unctuous eel perfectly grilled with just enough Unagi sauce to make it sing. My partner chose the Salmon Sashimi Don served atop sushi rice with shiso leaf, soy-cured yolk and ikura - $26. She wasn't a fan of the salmon roe (ikura) so I scored that and she also thought plain steamed rice would have been better than the sushi rice which had that slight vinegary tang. Overall, however, we left completely sated and ready to return to try more from their food extensive menu. Uncle Don, welcome to the family. read more
