Thankfully I went in at a good time, because apparently they prefer you call in to order the minis since they need to be machine sealed. I would have gotten the sampler pack, but it only had half the flavors I would eat. In any case the staff was super helpful and friendly. And everything is super affordable, the minis were about $2/pack. I tasted some new flavors while I was there. Mexican street corn is my go to, of course sold out that day. The double butter was too salty for my taste, but all the flavors i tried were delicious. The butter beer, chicken & waffles, and biscuits & gravy were my new faves.

This time I chose the salted caramel popcorn and the dark chocolate sea salt caramel popcorn! I'm amazed how fresh and crunchy this popcorn is and the flavors are off the chain! Whether you like sweet kernels or savory, there's a flavor for every taste! Some of the unique flavors are chicken and waffles, dill, butter beer, honey siracha, loaded baked potato, snickerdoodle, cotton candy, double chocolate pretzeltopia, birthday cake... just to name a few. This gourmet popcorn is pricey, I paid $9 for two small bags, but this is hand crafted, small batch, delicious popcorn that's worth every penny in my book. I mean, some people pay $5 for a specialty coffee, well, this is a specialty popcorn treat!! They serve the local community by hosting charity events and offering fundraising for schools and sports teams! You can also rent their old fashioned popcorn machine for business meetings, parties or other gatherings! What a fun idea! And they also have a rewards program! The shop is bright, colorful and whimsical, like stepping into a page from Alice in Wonderland! The service is efficient and the owners are super nice! So get snacking and try a bag or tin today!

If you don't believe me, go try it. On my first visit, the sweet staffer put a paper towel on the counter and provided generous samples of each flavor that piqued my interest. I tried all the cheesy flavors: cheddar, white cheddar, mac and cheese, parmesan and garlic, etc. My work friend tried the green apple and caramel and has purchased multiple bags of the combo -- she swears it's amazing. Sweet blends are the most expensive, savory starts around $3 for a mini bag, and butter is cheaper (see the photo I posted of the menu board for full pricing). They produce the popcorn in their South Richmond location and bring it up during weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the downtown office workers. It's right in the middle of a bunch of lunch restaurants, so there's no reason not to stop in to grab an afternoon snack. [They opened about two months ago, so it's still quite new.] I'm sure I'll continue to return on lunch breaks. The white cheddar is my favorite, and if my waistline and wallet would agree, I'd eat that stuff daily. So glad to know this novel shop is around! Such a cool addition to the downtown area.

My popcorn purchase was the Kettle Corn, White Cheddar popcorn and it was by far my favorite white cheddar popcorn purchase ever. The service at It's Poppin, matches the name Poppin!! They were so kind, friendly, and down-to-earth. I also appreciated that they had an open area, where you could watch them popping the popcorn. My nose led me right to truck, where all the yummy treats, were waiting for me to purchase. The prices, at first, I thought were a little high, but after eating them both and considering the size of bag/container, I think they were pretty fair. I hope to catch these peeps at another local event.

Lead story: I have had friends who would scoff at the least mention of Pork Rinds. I'd then ask,…read more"have you had fresh* pork rinds?" which generated replies from, "hell no," to "yes, the bag was in-date." It is unfortunate that so many people deny themselves fresh pork rinds based on such limited experience. "Aren't they just fried pig skin?" they offer condescendingly. I gather my Southern gumption mentioning that most love fried chicken, with its gobs of vaguely-seasoned flour and breadcrumbs, as a delicacy. So, after reconsideration, they agree to try these babies at KING'S GOURMET POPCORN, any good county fair, or summer festival. Pro tip: if you still have pork rinds 24+ hours old, they make great croutons! Caution: aftet ingesting good rinds, warn your friends and family that you may develop a passion for Tammy Wynette, and other classic "Country & Western" musicians, and a taste for mass-produced American beer! You have been warned! Their carefully chosen variety of popcorn is designed for flavor, not the cheaper variety mean to take up space. Still crunchy, KING'S combines flavorings to make each handful, lead to the next. Soon, you look down at your empty "small" bag and ask for more from the laidback staff who push hard for your positive experience. They are also very friendly with hikers who often eat under-seasoned mush for days! J.M. * my preference is "fresh " is 0-24 hours old, like a french baguette.
