Really sad. On this business trip we were provided much of the local flavor including 2 BBQ joints. The food was OK, but compared to everything else we had in Waco, this really felt like they were phoning it in. I've had better BBQ at a farmer's market in Pennsylvania. It is sad to report, because the folks behind the counter really were kind and clearly enthusiastic for what they do. On the road again, this time in the heart of Texas, Waco. Hotel recommended uncle Dan's barbecue and I was not disappointed. When you're in Texas barbecue seems to be the only way to go. Uncle Dan's did not disappoint. Had a Texas tater with a side of coleslaw and let me tell you, tasty. Tasty tasty! A nice family place with a ton of character. Not sure what to order in so on the recommendation of one of the staff had the Texas tater. Again, not disappointed. Covered with brisket cheese and sauce. Certainly was a fitting end to a long travel day. Highly recommend this place and will definitely stop back before heading back home! read more

Well after Uncle Dan sold this Restaurant The new owner implemented very effective practices to reduce cost, Making sure the Texas tator is 1/2 the size with less meat and removed drink stations so getting a refill is impossible. Also the Turkey is dryer Sahara desert. Don't bother read more

What a cool place, the food was fantastic. I did the three meat platter and chose smoked turkey, brisket and the jalapeño sausage. Mac & cheese was great and the chili beans had a perfect heat. The quality, taste and portion has really improved since the last time we ate here. The chopped was moist and not dry as our last visit. The chili beans were good and not mushy. Dear Owner, If I could leave a zero star review I certainly would. I just had the most horrifying experience with the food I received. I've been a frequent customer for 20+ years and I'm mortified of the price of the food but even more so the nerve of serving it to your customers. You have managed to ruin the Uncle Dan's legacy of a name for great food. I noticed the parking lot was empty when I came through the drive-thru at lunch. I really thought the place was closed until the exceptionally nice lady who's worked there for years came over the speaker to take my order. Not only has the price become overbearing, (I may have been able to get over the price if not for the quality being the biggest issue) the portion of the salad is 1/4 of the size it used to be. It's like buying a bag of chips for $10 and you open it and it's full of air. But I wish my salad was full of air. It instead was full of the most awful meat I've ever laid my eyes on and wouldn't even feed it to my dog. I had to throw it away. Not only did it have the texture of boot leather, but it appeared to be several days old and have been heated and reheated several times after being cooked and just dumped on the salad in hopes of just getting rid of it. I have to agree with several other reviews that the quality of the food has gone down but this one really takes the cake. So, if anyone decides to eat here do so at your own risk and don't waste your money! I'm absolutely horrified you've chosen to feed your customers this trash!!! read more

I feel a little bad leaving a harsh review on a place where the people are so friendly, but the food has to be the star. That part of my experience was horrible. The deviled eggs were served in watery cups, and while I don't know how old they were, they were starting to take the shape of their containers and were virtually rubberized. My rolls were hard, and the mac and cheese was clabbered with the noodles turning hard in places. My parents have fond memories of this place being good, but today they had to throw their uneaten, dried-up dessert in the trash. My hunch is that they just don't do enough business here anymore to keep the food fresh. read more

First time here and I really enjoyed it. I will say that the meat portions could be more for the price but I was very pleased with the taste. The only thing I would not recommend is the turkey, it reminded me more of a deli style turkey. The brisket was great, and if you haven't tried the white potato salad, omg it was so good. The portions for sides are well worth it. The staff was very friendly and helpful, the place was clean and tidy. It wasn't busy at all but I didn't mind. Brought friends here from Toronto for lunch. I had the 2 meats and 2 sides Combo, brisket and ribs and Mac n cheese and baked beans. The meat was really good, tender and flavorful. I liked the thick BBQ sauce. The baked beans were good, but I didn't like the Mac n cheese. It was a little dry and too peppery for my taste. Bottom Line: Wonderously well smoked meats taken to Tender Town & served with bodacious sides. Friendly folks, clean premises. Price is cheap for the quality. If you're in the Waco area in need of some smokin' good BBQ, check out Uncle Dan's. Top Line: I went for one of Uncle Dan's combo plates; 3 meats and a pair of sides. The carnivorous trifecta was sliced brisket (with $2 upgrade to prime brisket), jalapeno smoked sausage, and a couple bones of pork spare ribs. Wingmen were a very generous scoop each of their chili beans and southwestern style slaw. Drink of the day was bottomless glass of sweet tea. Portions were quite generous!! The first bite of the prime brisket was a revelation! The flavor was super smoky & rich. Kudos for their rub. Whatever it was, it created a starkly strong flavored crust on the slab o' brisket. The thin slices had that metallic sheen you see sometimes on righteously smoked meats. And *TENDER*!!! Oh. My. Goodness!! Those slices of brisket were within a hairsbreadth of being literally melt in your mouth tender. Each bite was "roll it around on your tongue and savor... savor... savor... the wonderocious flavor" good. Jalapeno sausage was rich with well smoked flavor and had a bit of bite on the finish. The friendly counter man had given me a small sample bite before hand to insure it wasn't too spicy, but I would put it only around a 4 on a 1-10 scale. I bet a kindergartner could handle it. The two bones o' ribs echoed the high level of smoked found in the brisket & sausage entrees. They were also quite huge-o-mungous, being very well padded with smoke crusted meat (and the needed fat tissue for moistness and flavor as well) on all sides of the bones. The ribs were cut to below the bottom of the cartilage. So some of the meaty belly (normally showing up as bacon) was included on each rib. According to my "meatcutter in a previous life" hands, I'd guess each rib approached 8 ounces (half a pound) in size. So they were big, heavily smoked (meat looked like a high quality no-water-added ham in color, if not better), very tender, and insanely good tasting. The chili beans had a strong flavor rich in cumin I believe. Tasted very much in the chili direction without tasting of everyday chili powder off the supermarket shelf. Spiciness level was low, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, since the flavor was so distinct and rich even without the heat. The southwest style slaw was juicy & slightly sweet. Not tart so it went very well with the strongly flavored meats. Sweet tea was sweet without burying the black tea flavor. Temp was about room temperature, so not iced as the dispenser label said. If I'd have needed it cold, there was an ice chute in the soda dispenser. Uncle Dan's is spacious with lots of tables and booths. Tables, floors, & extremely spacious restroom were clean. Bonus points for decorating the restroom tastefully. Counter help were all friendly & helpful & hospitable. This place is an easy candidate for repeat visits. But my Waco BBQ crawl has just started, so we'll have to see what the others have to offer. read more

I had heard positive talk about this place, so I wanted to check it out. I love good BBQ, especially brisket. I went by after work one day. I got a two meat plate with the sides. The brisket was ok...but very fatty. Not that exciting. And the sausage had almost no flavor to it. Very average. The sides were ok. I'm not in any hurry to go back though. Maybe this place used to be good, but not sure I would say that it is anymore. Also it's rather pricey and the service was lousy. I don't know. There has to be better barbecue here in Waco. read more

I'm not from the area and came here on a whim. Overall really tasty chopped brisket sandwich, Mac and cheese was amazing. Oh and the banana pudding, to die for. My ONLY complaint was I ordered my chopped brisket sandwich with everything on it except the bbq sauce(which was pretty dang good aswell) I wanted it on the side. Drove by and decided to try Uncle Dan's. I am glad I stopped in. Very casual where you order and they prepare your plate as you walk down the line. My preference is a sit down and order restaurant, but this place's food makes up for it. We had jalapeño sausage, brisket, chopped brisket and ribs. All of the meat was tender and delicious. Barbecue is ok. Sauce is exceedingly tangy. White potato salad tastes like pickle juice. Cole slaw is decent. The WORST part was the attitude of the drive-thru personnel. I asked for help in determining how much chopped brisket to order for 3 people and she repeatedly said "aw don' knaw." I'm not a cook, so I don't have a good idea of portion sizes, so I asked for help determining the sizes of the sides. Again, "aw don' know." When I got to the window, I was handed the bag and received no thank you, no have a good day, no thanks for coming by, no see you next time, nothing. Pathetic. Is it really "As Tender as a Mother's Love?" I guess that depends on your mom, but I that might be a bit of a hyperbole from Uncle Dan's advertising staff. Uncle Dan does make some truly excellent vittles though. I've had brisket ($6) every time; I liked it so well I never branched out. The bbq baked potatoes and potato salad are great, too. This place is pretty casual; you go through a line and order your food, take it to your seat, and enjoy. Entrees with side items and bread run $7-10, sandwiches $3-5 Strangely, WiFi is available at Uncle Dan's. You wouldn't expect it here, but sure enough, they've got it at both locations now. read more
