They brag on how they are childhood buddies so zo doesn't worry about getting fired unless he is part owner. If he's not interested in you he ignores you. Some schools, you may have one instructor where here, at least for the kids classes, there are at a minimum 2 but usually there are three to four instructors at any one time. I've been talking to Fred Villarica, the owner for over a year now trying to plan my trial. But I'd never actually gone in until last week Friday. I'll be honest, I was intimidated after being out so long. I was pretty good when I was younger, for a beginner, and I know I won't be the same after all these years. I was also afraid of getting hurt and derailing my long term fitness goals. So anyway I made it, and I stood around a bit. I nodded at the purple belt on the floor who appeared to be running things, Kevin. I didn't know if I was allowed to get on the mats so I began to change and just waited for someone to engage me. Eventually, Fred saw me standing there looking like the idiot I am, and he came over and said "Get on the mats." So I obeyed and joined in the drills. We did quite a few drills, some of which I had to modify due to my permanent wrist injuries, but for the most part I did everything they did. I can't do any of those bear walks since my wrists don't bend. I tried to do them on my knuckles, and I was successful, but it tore up and split my skin. This is not desirable so I won't do that anymore. I'll modify to work around my wrist injury. The school is about the same size as many other schools I've visited and trained at. The mats appear clean and sanitary. The bathrooms and other common areas are also clean. The training is solid, but I knew this before I got there, I did research the school prior to arriving. Also, my buddy Allen Lee trained with them for awhile, and he highly recommended them as well. The folks I've met so far are all really cool, as I mentioned before, I was very intimidated coming back, but once on the mats, and around the great group of guys and gals, I was all good. Truth be told, most of the people I've met in combat arts are cool. There is a camaraderie we all share as fellow practitioners. There's only been a time or two where I met a jerky person at a martial arts school. Most people are part of the unit that forms the school. You know what is a good indicator of a good martial arts school? If the guys are really good. Everyone I've rolled with is pretty damn good. Even the younger, smaller guys are very crafty. I don't go very hard when rolling with the younger ones because this isn't about tapping or dominating them, it's about learning and moving. I pretty much become an uke (the person who "receives" a technique) for them. I allow them to work for position, while providing resistance and using some of my weight. I'll block them here and there, but eventually I allow them to get the dominant positions and execute their submissions. When those kids grow up, they are going to be amazing at what they do. The adults are also good and I've had some good rolls with some beasts. I've been getting my back side handed to me, but as my BJJ specific conditioning improves, I look forward to providing more value to my training partners. Fantastic experience! Fred, Alonzo, and the team at UNA have created a very respectful and welcoming environment in which they genuinely want to see everyone succeed as a practitioner, regardless of your goals (competition, self defense, or fitness). They patiently take the time to support, breakdown strategies, and/or provide feedback. I've tried the morning mixed level classes, PM beginner classes, and the no gi classes-- all provide a challenge and great mix of practitioners to roll with. This is the most professional, courteous, jujitsu school anywhere! My son started there at age 6 a couple of years ago. His transformation has been nothing short of a miracle. I have been going here for about 2 months. I am one of the only 2 girls in the class, i initially wanted to learn womens self defense but this is just as useful. Fred and Alonzo are great teachers and very patient. They dont take it easy on you, if you join this class you will be working hard for sure. (most of the guys in class are training to fight matches) I, however just want to tone my body and loose a little baby fat :) I can already see a big difference in my body. One word JOIN! read more

When looking for a Brazilian Jiujitsu school I think pedigree, atmosphere, and detail are very important. This place has that for sure. Alonzo does the morning classes and Fred does the night classes, and I've been splitting my time between the two and they both really care about your development. I've seen Alonzo and Fred both train people who are not super athletic, but also guys who are super big, strong, and athletic, and they are skilled enough to teach you how to handle that. Seriously, if you want to figure out how to defend yourself for real and not learn how to yell "HIYA!" louder this is a great place to be. The environment is great, everybody helpful, nobody is trying to tear your head off, everybody is trying to improve and help each other, and everybody is working hard. VERY HARD. Awesome Kids Class for 4-6 year olds! My 4 year old son and 4 year old niece go to the kids class and they learn a lot and have a great time! My son comes home and practices moves with his dad. He talks to me about moves he has learned and says 'i can't train with you mama, but i can with papa cuz you may get hurt!!' Professor Fred and instructors Kevin and Roc are great with my son! My son is a small 4 yr old, but being in this class, makes me feel good about how he feels about himself and how 'tough' he can be!
