Umari Hand Roll Bar is one of the food stalls at Topanga Social in Westfield Topanga. Topanga Social is an upscale food court on the 1st floor so do not get it confused with the separate boring mall food court on the 2nd floor. Parking can get pretty tough during busy weekends at Westfield Topanga. The food stall offers a hand roll combo (2 hand rolls for $15) or cut / specialty-cut rolls. Our party got the Hand Roll Combo (2 hand rolls with salmon + yellowtail for $15) as a quick meal and my salmon hand roll tasted good enough, but it was relatively expensive for such a tiny portion. Honestly it was not exactly bang for your buck and I just needed this emergency food so I could get through the remaining mall shopping. Not exactly the food stall I would go out of my way for.

A new business now where Temaki Hand Roll bar was. Not much changed I have to tell you Pretty much the same menu and concept. I got salmon cut roll and eel hand roll. Eel was ok, nothing special, salmon meat was fresh but looked and felt like it was crushed and turned into a ground meat. It was peppered and oversalted. The presentation for the price is very modest and unpolished. One and done

This is just my opinion, what a lovely and fun restaurant…read more Location: Parking lot is small, but the restaurant is lively and intimate. It is an interesting and welcoming restaurant and has a great atmosphere. I also love how the location has Japanese and Thai artwork all over. 4/5 Staff: The owner is super kind and helpful. She has a lot of passion and obviously cares about her customers. She is adorable and works very hard. I also thought that her staff was nice and attentive. 5/5 Price: I feel that the food is well priced and competitive. The serving portions meet my expectations and of course I will always say I want more, but that is unrealistic. 4.5/5 Food: Tonkatsu Chicken Curry Rice: Absolutely the dish I miss from Japan and this has that comforting dish vibe I used to have at home or in Japan. I highly recommend and love how this makes me warm and happy after eating it. 5/5 sorry no photo but my favorite dish Teriyaki Chicken Domburi: Simple, delicious, and just what I wanted. 4/5 Vegetable Tempura: Very light, delicious, and it is what it says it is. This isn't too fancy or trying to be different. 4.5/5 Conclusion: I had a great time here and I ordered a lot of food to go (sorry I do not have photos or reviews for everything). This is a place I recommend you stop here when you want some well done japanese dishes to cheer you up or need a heart filling dish. My Score: 4.5/5 Yelp Score: 5/5

Everything we ordered was absolutely amazing -- fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. The beer and cocktails are definitely worth trying too! Special shoutout for the ladies' restroom -- probably the cleanest and best-smelling one I've ever seen!

I wanted to write this because almost everything I saw before coming here was positive, and I think…read moreprospective diners should have another perspective - especially if you've had traditional omakase before or are very particular about sushi. We booked through OpenTable the night before and had no trouble getting a Friday-night reservation. Be aware that there is a $100/person cancellation fee. Parking was easy; we found street parking right outside, and the meters ended at 8 PM. We arrived early and were seated in the lounge while the 5 PM omakase seating finished. The restaurant itself is divided between the lounge and the main dining area. I started with a beer and was a little surprised by the limited selection. Even the Sapporo was bottled rather than draft. Later I ordered the five-pour sake pairing for $59. This is where some of the service issues started becoming noticeable. There wasn't much explanation of the sake pairing. I didn't know which pour I was on, what I was drinking, or why it had been selected for the food being served. The first pour was non-alcoholic. At one point when I asked where we were in the pairing, I was told I would receive six pours that evening, but ultimately I received five total. Maybe the intention was one non-alcoholic drink plus five sake pours, but I'm still not sure - and that illustrates the problem. My wife also had to keep following up on her drink request. Eventually one server brought it, and several minutes later another server arrived with the same drink, apparently unaware that she had already received it. We were seated directly beside the service station, which also made the meal feel hectic. Restaurants are obviously busy behind the scenes, but part of a special dining experience is that the guest shouldn't constantly feel that chaos. Several courses into the meal we noticed we haven't even been given a linen napkin. When I asked, they said they had run out of the regular linens and gave me a paper napkin instead. I've honestly never experienced that during a tasting menu before. The unfortunate part is that the actual food was very good. There are excellent ingredients here: high-quality fish, Hokkaido scallop, uni, A5 Miyazaki wagyu, fresh wasabi, caviar, etc. Many of the flavors were genuinely delicious, and the presentations were ambitious. But execution matters tremendously with omakase. My biggest issue was how the nigiri was served. Instead of the chef making each piece and serving it immediately to each individual, he assembled the entire nigiri progression and served all of the pieces at once. By the time the sushi reached us, the rice was already cold. The scallop hand roll had the same problem. It sat long enough that the nori was already soft rather than crisp. That may sound overly particular to someone who doesn't eat much omakase, but temperature and texture are fundamental parts of sushi. Warm or body-temperature shari paired with cool fish is completely different from eating nigiri that has been sitting on a plate. We could also see the chef and assistant working directly in front of us, and their coordination didn't feel particularly polished. There were forgotten components and audible corrections. At one point the chef struggled while plating the uni, it fell into another component, and that same piece was ultimately served to us after just witnessing that. There was another moment where the chef displayed a traditional sharkskin grater for fresh wasabi, but the chef openly joked that he was too lazy to grate it traditionally and used a normal grater instead. That wouldn't bother me by itself. What struck me was the disconnect. There seemed to be a lot of emphasis on showing diners the Japanese ingredients, specialty tools, premium fish, rice, wagyu, ginger, and wasabi (and how expensive things are). But the deeper elements of omakase - precision, timing, restraint, temperature, pacing, and quiet coordination - weren't operating at the same level. I've had several omakase experiences in Japan, so perhaps my reference point is different. I'm not expecting a $190 restaurant in Woodland Hills to recreate Ginza. But I don't think things like cold nigiri rice, soggy nori, confused beverage service, missing linen napkins, or disorganized pacing are unreasonable criticisms at this price. Here's my analogy for Aji Mori as a Formula 1 team. They have the budget and engineering to build a very fast car. The expensive components are there. But the driver and pit crew matter too. You can flaunt how impressive the car is, but if the pit stops and race execution aren't there, you aren't going to win. Aji Mori has the ingredients to become a good omakase. The flavors and product quality are already there. What it needs now is refinement in execution and service. I wouldn't rush back for the omakase in its current form, but I'd genuinely reconsider in the future if the execution improves.

I found Yume cause I told it was similar to Shibuya and so I went inside and they didn't have a wait at all! The hostess was super helpful. So many different seating options like couches, booths, tables, bar... Our server was Herb and he was super helpful!! We started with the Creamy rock shrimp spicy tuna roll- SO DELICIOUS. And they had ponzu and soy sauce for us Then the creamy salmon roll was so perfect because it even had onions in it which I loveeee. And finally we got the Yellowtail cilantro roll which was refreshing and perfect cause I loveeee cilantro. And the green sauce paired nicely with it!! We tried all of their recommendations: the salmon and onion, Shibuya roll, albacore yellowtail, salmon nigiri, and sea bream nigiri. The albacore was by far my favorite. Seriously, order an abundant amount of it! This is easily one of the most delicious nigiri spots I've ever been to. Next time, I might skip the rolls altogether and order albacore for the entire night. Life hack - ask for a side of their ponzu sauce! The restaurant is very small and does not take reservations, so expect to put your name down and wait for a table. This is now the THIRD time this has happened to us. We put our name on the list and waited patiently for about an hour, only to watch people who arrived after us get pulled out of line and seated before us. It honestly seemed like certain customers were being given preference because they knew someone there. This time, we finally confronted the staff and even showed them our name on the list to prove how long we had been waiting. Instead of acknowledging what happened or giving us a reasonable explanation, they denied it and simply told us, "We'll seat you in 15 minutes." Keep in mind, we had already been waiting for an HOUR. Once could be a mistake. Twice could be poor organization. But when the same thing happens three separate times, it's hard to ignore. No sushi is worth being treated like your time doesn't matter. We gave this place multiple chances, but after this experience, we will never return. There are plenty of sushi restaurants where customers are treated fairly and respectfully.

We got the $160 and it was a disappointment. Save your money and go to Aji Mori House in Woodland Hills. The service was great here, but unfortunately the food doesn't match. The majority of the sushi was just soy sauce and wasabi. The most off putting thing was something that tasted like BBQ sauce on some of the sushi. Gross. My seafood chowder was cold. The uni, toro, sashimi ceviche, dessert, and scallop with salad was good but not worth the $160 omakase experience. They added an additional room in the back to accommodate more seating. They have a parking lot to the left of the building if you're facing them, and plenty of street parking.
