    Mountain of vegetables €5
    Stephanie F.

Cute little comfort ramen restaurant. The chef prepares the ramen in front of you when you're sitting at the bar. Since I had been snacking on everything beforehand (Belgium and the sugary snack game is real)... I shared the Chef's special and the mountain of vegetables. We also got two glasses of red wine, all for around €33. The ramen was delightful. It had the tonkatsu soup base which was more full fat than the other lighter soups, came with four pieces of freshly pan grilled pieces of meat, bean sprouts, veggies, peas, and kimchi. Now, the mountain of vegetables was surprisingly tasty. It was semi-preserved type veggies that was super flavorful and crunchy. Reminded me of a a Chinese dish from the motherland, yum! Wine gave a nice buzz and was 13% alcohol. Overall would definitely recommend this place! :)

    Gyoza!

I was rather looking forward to a chance at trying Umamido. I've been spoiled on really good ramen in Japan and even in the U.S. and had damn good ramen altogether. Umamido's pictures of ramen and these wintry days just brings a craving. The ramen here does indeed look very good, and I'd even say it's rather decent at best, but there was magic missing from my bowl. I imagine if I'd tried the tonkotsu I'd find a bit more 'oomph', maybe? Since my mother can't really eat pork or a lot of it, we got an order of the chicken & veggie gyoza, and a single order of vegetarian ramen which states it uses a different broth. I'd otherwise have gotten either the tonkotsu or the miso/kara miso, but lets see. The Vegetarian Ramen comes with half a soft boiled egg, scallions, sesame seeds, chunks of soft tofu, bean sprouts, spinach and a bit of steamed kale, little oil to no oil. Flavor of the broth, medium savory to weak. It got better toward the end, but felt a bit weak/missing something. Tofu was on a positive note, refreshing and as if drinking water in contrast to the semi-salty broth. On a negative note, I can see someone thinking "wow, this is boring." Haha. The tofu doesn't really have much of a flavor. The egg was good though and the noodles had a decent chewiness. The overall look of the meal was beautiful too. Gyoza-- at 7 euros.. it was basically a euro a gyoza. Next to fries/frites, gyoza are my go to meal at home. My horrible go to meal that I love so much steamed sometimes or quickly fried up. I often make my own gyoza and sauce from scratch, but I love trying other places gyoza to gain a bit of kitchen inspiration. These were very standard at best and lacking. The sauce was subtle and I found it weak again and that's not comparing it to my own concoctions, just comparing to other restaurants I've ordered gyoza at across the board. Overall, it had a nice crispness and in general it's not a bad starter/side. I'd say it wasn't a bad meal---satisfying for the most part, but very overpriced for a small-ish bowl of ramen. I imagine the normal broth is far better though. The menu also applauds you on attempting to try ramen, which makes me think ramen isn't too big a thing over here. I noticed there were several Umamido shops all over the city, so if you're near one and feeling ramen, I'd say give it a go-- preferably around lunch since there is a deal, but probably not something to go out of your way for.

View on the open kitchen. Cook is missing but only for a couple of minutes.

Umamido is barely noticeable from the street as the house front is pretty narrow. Inside the restaurant is rather small: maximum capacity is 20 guests if you squeeze 6 persons at the bar. Interior is simple, clean, functional. Despite its deceivingly common look the furniture is really sturdy and quality made. Lighting is at first sight bad because very strong with all the white walls and tiles but leaves tables uncluttered from lamps or your head safe when you stand up. Good. The food is a mixed bag. I was disappointed but not my friends. The gyoza were good, could have been a tad more firm. Soya sauce is served in the plate, in sufficient quantity. No need for the typical soya bottle on the table. Frees up space. Clever. The kimchi was really dry. It's maybe easier to grab with chopsticks and safer for clothes in case of drops but it loses its original flavour. The tonkutsu ramen were good, just good. Nothing special, no particular "twist". Umamido is good at communicating and using social media to get exposure and more ratings. Everything has been well thought. It's location is clearly an asset. Price-quality ratio is okay. But there are better choices in the area for those who don't mind walking a couple of extra minutes away from Place Flagey.

The food here was excellent. We had the seaweed salad, the Gyoza, and spicy ramen. All were excellent. The spicy ramen had a ton of flavor. The ambiance was good, but the place was otherwise a little small. I would give it 5 stars if it was a little bigger.

Very good ramen. Had the vegetarian and it was rich in umami. The noodles was very good in texture and taste. The only negative is that they didnt have the traditional ramen spicing available, like chili oil, soy and shichimi togarashi.

    I confirm, it's savory!

After reading Christoph's review, I decided I needed to give this restaurant a try. Japanese ramen cooked by a non-Japanese? Really? You have to taste it to believe. And I did. I ordered the famous pork bun and a lunch menu that came with the miso ramen and gyoza. The pork bun was delicious. A little different than some I have tasted in NYC, however it had its kick to it which made it really tasty. The pork meat itself might be a little too greasy, but if you don't mind that factor, that's what actually makes it savory. The gyozas? They right amount of crustiness on the bottom, while the rest of the gyoza is tender. Can't beat that. As for the ramen, they just tasted perfectly. And the pork in the ramen was cooked to such a perfection and softness that it melts in your mouth. Heaven. My personal and very positive experience with this restaurant aside, I believe the restaurant definitely deserves a 5 star for these following reasons: - The menu offers just more than just ramen and to be able to offer the pork buns makes the place just special - The meat is bio meat coming from Malmédy (got to know this after a little chat with the owner Guy). That shows the dedication the restaurant has in offering real quality - The menu offers vegetarian ramen. Having some vegetarian friends, it is nice to know that there is finally a Japanese restaurant, and in particular a ramen place, that offers a vegetarian option - Another important factor that will make me come back to the restaurant is the design and the atmosphere. It's nice to be seated in a restaurant with a sleek design, with no 'kitsch' decoration. And the atmosphere is just welcoming and unpretentious. Everything you need to enjoy an exquisite meal. - And one last aspect, I love Guy's motto "Slow food served fast", referring to the fact that you need 24 hours to make the ramen bouillon, but then when you come to the restaurant, you're served very fast. Love that.

Tonkotsu ramen with pork belly pretty darn good

One of the few Asian restaurants you will find here, they serve ramen and only ramen, except for a plate of gyoza I saw at the table next to me. There is a choice between 5 types and I went with the shio or natural flavor. It was slightly heavier than the normal shio broth but lighter than a traditional tonkatsu. It had all the right notes of umami. The noodles were handmade and slightly larger and softer than I generally like them but held the broth well. The perfect amount of toppings with an egg, charsiu, sprouts, bamboo shoots and spring onion. For €12 a bowl, it was excellent value. I would say the only thing that could help it land 5 stars would be a better ambiance. It was quiet as a library, no music and just a handful of customers for an early dinner. However I would definitely return to try another lovely bowl!

Kitchen is perfectly clean, neat and purposefully arranged for efficient cooking and serving. Staff speaks Japanese (except the two western ladies). All were very kind and the service was swift. I was a bit disappointed by the gyoza. They were good but a bit too greasy to my taste. It was prepared in front of my eyes (boiled then panned) and nothing noticeable happened. My Shoyu ramen with extra slices of pork was quite good but there again the soup base was a bit too oily/greasy to be perfectly to my taste. Bottom line, I'm giving a 4th star to the boss (I assume he was) because he speaks English and Korean (thumbs up), besides Japanese and was very nice with me. I will come back with friends and hope they will have fine-tuned the "greasy" part in the meantime.
